Don't worry... they only run this deal when they have a surplus of beef, and they don't want it to go bad. It's basic business economics. They have sales to move out old stock
This, plus most people buy a soda with their food and soda is sold at a massive markup. It costs around 10-20 cents for the cup, lid, straw, and soda and they charge like $2 for it. Not every person will buy a soda but enough people will that they more than make back any losses that they incur from a sale or coupon.
When my little brother and I were growing teens, my mom would take us to Arby's all the time. Man, we could put away food back then. And I'm sure she was glad to buy us so many sandwiches for less than 20 bucks
Here's how Arby's does it: The beef is sliced thinly enough to read a newspaper through (in fact, that's the actual test!). The roasts they're sliced from are ten pounds, and cost about 1000 dollars each (at least they did in 1997). The backine team member is instructed to drape the meat into the bottom of the bun. You only get 3 ounces of roast beef, but when it's sliced that thinly, it looks like a lot. Ntm, once the heat from the beef permeates the bun, and the sandwich is wrapped and placed on the warming slide, the sandwich you get is maybe one-third as tall as the sandwich advertised. And I worked there when they would run 5 For 5. Imagine the line in the drive thru, especially during Christmas shopping season, when everyone has been out shopping and no one wants to cook. And remember, any meat that comes off a cow is technically "beef", doesn't matter if it's tongue, ear, tail, or snout.

I would recommend Drew Gooden’s video about whether or not SNL has gotten more or less funny over the years. I really think that, like always, SNL just has hits and misses in the every episode. This good sketch isn’t so much a call back to how things used to be, but more so this is how things always are-some good sketches and some bad ones every week.

Also it’s reconstituted beef - cheap odd cuts and fat ground up into a meat emulsion, extruded into a loaf shape like a giant hot dog, cooked and then sliced thin. I’m not complaining, I literally had Arby’s today and loved it, but let’s not compare their “roast beef” to roast beef.

It comes as a frozen paste into the store. It's less like traditional roast beef and more like a hot dog that is sliced. It's not "cuts" of meat, it's blended leftovers. I worked at three different Arby's back in the day. In the early 2000s we would do five for five with a coupon! 😛
Where I shop, roast beef is around $7 a pound. So you buy a pound of it, get some Velveeta cheese to melt in the microwave and some cheap buns. And that makes a bunch of Arby's Melts that taste SO much better.

Offering deals to bring in customers has been around forever. Why is that hard to understand? It's like they were trying to shame Arby's for offering deals to get people to come to their business.

It’s completely fine for fast food companies to have deals or discount boxes, the joke is just with HOW MUCH FOOD you’re getting for such a cheap price 😂😂 It makes you wonder about the quality of the food, or what they’re putting in it if they can sell it for that price and still make a profit.
