Damn, I can kind of relate to how he initially broke through. I too entered my comic series into a competition on a site called Webtoon back in 2018, for the chance of working for them. I didn't win or come runner up, so I lost all motivation for a long time. But my work still somehow caught the eye of one of the editors as they were looking through all the entries (only my panel layouts were absolutely awful). A month down the line, it led to Webtoon employing me and working along side the same editor too (God bless editors). I still currently work for them :)
Something that Sean Schemmel said recently is that he’s surprised that Dragon Ball doesn’t have a theme park like Disney Land and I definitely agree with that. Toriyama’s work does have a great appeal to different age groups and that’s what I admire about him the most
I don't think it was dumb luck at all. Being a mangaka doing multiple works, often at once and having to please strict editors, is thankless and laborious.
Toriyama: i want to do thing Everyone: no way! That couldnt possibly work dont do it Toriyama: *does thing anyway* **massive payoff thing does well** Repeat
I really like these kind of before all the fame videos.or i suppose more like a origin.if you can, please do other origin kinda videos for great artist, just a great watch
Thanks for covering the history of Toriyama-sensei's career in manga. There seems to be, at times, this revisionist history attitude to discredit Toriyama's skills, ability, as a story teller and mangaka. Videos like these help show and remind, people that his success is driven by his hardwork and tenacity. This is something we can all experience in our own personal journey.
People tend to not get when hes just joking about himself and think his forgetfulness is like some sort of idiocy (kind of like how Super treats Goku ironically), because of how often it gets exaggerated or blamed for things Toei does that fans don't like, but people here just think he writes everything. He doesn't didn't anything more than his manga and art for some things. People in America don't get that he has next to nothing to do with the movies, anime, super, GT and the video games.
@@GeteMachine He has more to do with Super than the other stuff since he basically wrote part of it and supervised the rest. But it isn't only him much like you say. Also I wouldn't say him talking down about himself is a joke, I see it often with many mangaka and other such Japanese creators, it seems to be self deprecation in order not to seem too full of themselves and you are right, people can't seem to see past it and say it's the immediate and only truth.
Toriyama's success is a really inspiring one. He continued to on his path as a artist until he had his first hit with Dr. Slump and again with Dragon Ball.
Damn. This is inspirational. As an artist who has been working on a story for the longest, I have only one real weakness. I have been told so many times that I tell good stories; but man am I a HUGE procrastinator. I have a few stories with a cast of characters and an entire of world built for them. But I hold off actually drawing them. A different than when I was in school and drew all day everyday trying to get better.
Same here.. Real question. Why we tend to be more productive in school era 😂 while when we got a freedom that we want, we procrastinate.. Seems like the energy to avoid repetitive activities (which is school) gave us that inspiration and motivation. Now that motivation that we like before become our daily repetitive thing. 😬
This video should be titled why after 20 I don't give a fuck about signing autographs or showing my face. Lol I always wanted an autograph of his but I know better and he earned his legendary reclusion and as an introvert I get it.
This is what a great editor can do for a series. They may not necessarily be right all the time, but they can push a creator to think outside of the box.
He became a millionaire before Dragon Ball. Dr. Slump was a success, people often forget that Toriyama already had produced a hit series before Dragon Ball.
This video came out at a good time for me. I just left my job in order to pursue the things I'm actually interested in, and stories like Toriyama's help to put things in perspective.
This is inspirational. You have to figure that there is not a single man behind such a hugely influencial seires such as Dragon Ball. Interesting to see the input of Toroshima.
12 million dollars in the beginning of the 80s? That is, adjusted by inflation, around 60 million today.
He is drowning in money i am very glad.
Toriyama earned those millions! Its inspiring to know that hard work will pay off and his worth to world is immense!

That's so cool dude!
Which webtoon do you work on?
@@supervegeta881 Da Yomanville Gang
That's awesome I'm also working on mine and I'm happy for you.
Congrats!
I find Toriuama's success inspiring.
It all comes down to trying harder and never giving up.
Just like his character Goku.

The theme park is real now!
From a guy still living with his parents to a millionaire play boy he's come a long way .
@Let's Talk true, it's in our culture to stay in family and take care of each other at all times
He was a playboy?
@@guileniam No.
I’m currently reading Toriyamas manga theater so this video is the perfect companion piece.
Dr slumps money goes brrrrr + watch out for toei lol
Cool story...as an artist and animator this guy is my ultimate sensei
I don't think it was dumb luck at all. Being a mangaka doing multiple works, often at once and having to please strict editors, is thankless and laborious.
Toriyama story is a great underdog story and just like Goku changed the world for the better. Rest in peace Toriyama.
I came back to this after the news
Toriyama: i want to do thing
Everyone: no way! That couldnt possibly work dont do it
Toriyama: *does thing anyway*
**massive payoff thing does well**

I like how like every famous mangaka has a mansion, it's very.. unexpected
Funny enough Toriyama was still living his parents for sometime even despite being a millionaire.
@@forgottenrelics1197 sick. Like.. Litterally every Minecraft youtuber lmfao
Congratulations akira toriyama on 20 million dollars we will miss you Rest In Peace

lol it was about dr slump but 90% of the video is db..
Toriyama's success is a really inspiring one. He continued to on his path as a artist until he had his first hit with Dr. Slump and again with Dragon Ball.
Such an inspiring and interesting story. We should be glad Toriyama didn't quit at rejected manuscript 499. You have to push through failure.
I’m sick of all the haters
How do manga royalties and general author payments work?

You just have to fucking do it.
Lol his style of lettering stood out for Torishima, so I guess that lettering at the design job paid off some how
I think it was because he used english lettering from memory

Toriyama has a kinda inspirational past before making Dragon Ball. Gets me in the mood to think about creating a series myself to make millions.
Toriyama's rags to riches story is inspiring, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are his masterpieces. Doctor Slump is alright and is funny
2:52 When I saw the panel layouts you showed earlier, I too was like "that's a really slick panel layout"
This is what a great editor can do for a series. They may not necessarily be right all the time, but they can push a creator to think outside of the box.
I think we can see now where Goku and Gohan get that indomitable fighting spirit from.... Their real life daddy.

Super early
Toriyama had and still has a very positive attitude. Loved the video BTW
thank you!
One word: Dragon Ball!!
Wrong! Dragon Ball is two words, and Dr Slump was Toriyama's breakthrough success.
Yeah but he was a slave to Dragon Ball all his life. Sad he never enjoyed his life.
Toriyama the master!
