The only reason this case was solved was because the FBI sent Greg Scarpa to Mississippi to extract the information. They would use Scarpa again to help solve a bombing in 1965

Allegedly Scarpa got the information on the location of the bodies by pistol-whipping a man who knew about them.

That's actually completely false and an urban legend. The FBI used money to bribe the "weakest links" - klansmen who weren't to keen on "killing white people" and believed this group went too far. FBI agent Joe Sulllivan (a friend of my uncle who was also in the FBI), who was a great me btw, obtained the information of where the 3 kids were buried by a Mississippi Hwy patrolman who got it from one of the perpetrators (and money was exchanged for the information).

Lived through this. The Klan had more clout than federal authorities during that time. Many whites were terrorized by the Klan if they had the temerity to support civil rights. Paul Turner--pastor of 1st Bapt Church, Clinton, TN--was beaten in 1958 when he walked 9 black students to CHS to start their school year. There was a riot by citizens over Eisenhower's forced integration. I was waked by the sounds of dynamite exploding in the HS just 3 blocks away in the fall semester of CHS. My mother was a teacher there and had to travel to Oak Ridge HS to teach her math classes. There was no safe place for us in that clime, and one took his life into his own hands to obey federal law concerning our black neighbors. I still remember the "whites Only" " Blacks Only" signs and the pervasive violence of the period, a feeling still being perpetrated today. It just seems that the USA CAN'T GROW UP AND PLAY NICE/FAIR/LIKE JESUS (who was a person of color, Himself).

The three civil workers were 2 whites and 1 black but the white lives lost were not as important as the 1 black. The Feds would not have cared one bit if it were only 2 whites but that one black sparked a national wide concern. Is the KKK racist? Hell no they were just mean stupid SOB’s that wanted their way and they did what they wanted to get it. Correction, they were racist but blacks felt the worst from them but whites could feel the same pain too if they crossed the Klan.

Andrew Goodman's death particularly resonates with me as I attended Queens College as well, although it was nearly two decades after his passing. It is wonderful that the Andrew Goodman Foundation was established to continue his good works. That sad, terrible night was truly a pivotal moment in civil rights history as it gave impetus to the passage of the important Voting Rights Act. We shall always remember the courage of these brave men.
