I have been in woodworking my entire life, but I am just now getting into CNC. I bought the Bobscnc E4, right now I am struggling with software, haven't routed anything yet, just playing with free software. This video is great, your explanations are everything that someone like my needs. I guess I need to use the evaluation of vcarve. Thanks for the video.
Hi David. Sorry for the delayed response. I was pretty under the weather. Yes, Vcarve is definitely the software to be using. Very flexible and intuitive
I really appreciate your instructions. It helps a lot! I am totally new to this so, thanks again. the only thing I would say is that the icons on the video were blurry and I had difficulty following the icons you were pressing. I know the general idea but it would help people like me who need clearer video images. Thank you for your instructions.
You make it very easy to understand. I'm chewing at the bit for a CNC to arrive soon I hope. I cut my first sign today on a Maker Space CNC. Thanks again for all that you do to help others become successful.
@@IDCWoodcraft Not enough time available at maker space except for the occasional prototype. Sometime within the next 90 days I hope to have a ShopSabre 23 safely inside my garage. I've looked at a dozen models and brands but this is my number choice. I'll do a video once it arrives.
This was very helpful, as a soon to be retired firefighter/Fire Chief of 50 years as a Volunteer and Paid combined looking at adding CNC to my small (24X32) hobby shop and to be honest am not very computer savvy! Have looked at the CNC really hard like you have and also looking at a Laser machine also and was wondering does the Vectric Vcarve also work for the Laser machines?
Amityfd1, thank you for all of the hard work and years of service that you've done my friend. It sounds like a cnc may be the perfect addition to your workshop. I recommend downloading the free version of Vetric so that you can follow along with the videos and see how you feel about it all before signing yourself up for anything. As for software for lasers, you'll likely want to use the Lightburn software.
I love your stuff and your presentations. I am an 80-year-old making custom garden furniture pieces. I would like some advice regarding the manufacturing of some of the more complicated chair parts on a CNC, and some advice on the type of machine you would recommend. Plus I would appreciate guidance on sign making, on the CNC, during the winter months when garden furniture is not been made.
Hi Barry. I'm sorry for the delay in responding. I was not feeling week at all for a few days. Regarding a machine for chair parts, it really depends on the size of the parts you want to make. since the colder seasons are slow, focus heavy on christmas gift projects.

Hello, Looking to purchase a cnc router. I am terrible with vector software. can you recommend a training course online or in person. I am not going to learn it by playing with it. I need to immerse myself in it. Any ideas? You make it look so easy.
Hi Vinny, Keep practicing and you will get better at the vCarve software. I have a video playlist linked below. I recommend you start at the top and work your way down. If you follow along to all the videos, you will be a master in no time. Here's the link: bit.ly/3mLHGfI
You should have pointed out to users that they should make sure that images downloaded are free of copyright restrictions, otherwise they are open to copyright infringement complaints, especially if they are selling products.
Gil, I'm glad the video was helpful for you my friend. You'll use a postprocessor (such as gsender or ugs) to send the gcode to your machine. The one you will use depends on the machine your using.
Thank you for your step by step tutorial .A small question about the software, they remove the machin tab from the 10.5 how do you add a new cnc machine ?
Oldmanwoodcraft, you are so welcome. I am not too sure what you mean, I was using Vectric 11 in this video. Your software might be a bit different if you are using Vectric 10.
Hello again, Thanks for all your help. Last 2 months have gone fast but I've learned a lot from watching your vids. I finally got Gsender to connect to my little 3018 machine (had a bad kill switch)( took awhile to figure out it was a normally closed switch, so unplugging it from the board did not solve the problem, but jumping the leads did.), I bought V Carve Desktop, got a Mark2 30x30 ordered, and built a CNC room in my garage just barely big enough for the machine to fit, I hope. Actually retro fitted a 6ft x 4ft storage closet. Yep I know its gonna be tight. Now my next problem is doing my own design work. Using Gsender I'm setting XY zero at the front/left corner but when I start to carve the spindle only moves onto the workspace a couple inches and Gsender shows it being in the middle of the project? Do you think the problem is my Gsender firmware setup or in my toolpaths? I know you can only make a guess. I don't know if its possible but it looks like its moving in millimeters and I thought I had everything set to inches including the final save to GCODE GRBL. But its exciting, most fun I've had in years, pushing my 80 year old brain hard again trying to learn all this stuff. Thanks again for sparking some life back into me and is that "At Amazon" guy lives anywhere near Phx have him contact me I'll be glad to help if I can. If nothing else we can have a good laugh at ourselves.

I liked your video. Your approach is simple and to the point. I am having one issue. You demonstrated drawing a line with the polyline tool. When I performed the same function, V Carve and the profile tool would not carve the "open vector". I could not find a solution for closing an open vector on a line. It worked for you, not me. I have found the same complaint by others on the forum. Any solutions?
Hi Garrett, loving the tutorials, really helped me alot, thank you, quick question, is there a shortcut key for Interactive Trim, cant seem to find one and can you add your own shortcut keys, Cheers Stu

This was a great video. I would love to see you run the CNC to see how you do it and load it and do your tool changes. I have a Stepcraft D.840 I am learning and it has a tool changer. I am curious how this would leverage that. Do you run them as separate GCODE files for the various tools and steps to create the finished product?
Hi Crazy. I envy you with the tool changer. You can run multiple tools with one gcode file when you have that. It'll make life so much easier than most of us CNC'ers out here.
@@IDCWoodcraft hey Garrett, I am learning the tool changer and if I understand things if I am using five tools in the changer I run each tool as a job with its GCODE correct? I can’t change back and forth if I identify the tool in VCarve, correct? I think I need to pay you for some tutoring via video.
Ok I'm going to throw this question out there. Are there specific materials that are best in making certain projects? Sign making, 3D carving, inlays, unusual designs, stacked text, two sided projects. Is there like a norm associated with a project? As a beginner I'm wondering if this is something to consider? Thanks Garrett
Hi Max. This is a very broad question with many answers. It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish, and what type of look you want. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to answer this question because there are so many varieties of choices based on what I just said.
Thanks for the step by step guide! For some reason on my 3rd toolpath (tracing the edge) the bit is plunging deep into the material on its way to the coordinates it needs to cut. It gets bogged down very quickly and can't move further. Any ideas?
Hi Dave. Your Z safe height is set low. On the toolpath side, you'll see a srt button at the top. Click it. At the bottom, you'll see 'gap above z' or somethinglike that. Set the number higher. The other [roblem may be you did not reset the zero on the bit.
Nice job, I'm just learning, so after you design you send to the code program? Then is there a video to show how to start cutting as how to get the cutter to the project

Hey now. I noticed it. You drew a sign that the steam off the coffee was straight up and down and the finished sign had a swirl above it also Sunday was closed on the drawing one and the finished sign was 8-5
Hello Mr. Garret, This is the 80 year old man again. I'm still struggling with machine set up and actually sending the file to the machine. I read your comment to Gil, so apparently I need another program to make it all work?? You mentioned UGS and Gsender. Can you share a link on were to buy these, and do you have a vid where you show saving the GCODE to one of these programs and actually sending it to your machine. Thanks for responding to the questions all us lost souls are asking. Don A
Don, no problem brother. gSender is free. You can download it here: sienci.com/gsender/ As for saving gcode, take a look at this video. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/C46zguYGM-o/видео.html Pay special attention to around the 20 minute mark, I show you how to save gcode and then open it in gSender.
I recently bought a small desktop CNC machine to make ID badges. After seeing one of your videos, I bought V-Carve Desktop. I have three areas on the badge that have text, varying in size and spacing. I have not been able to select more than one text box at a time to calculate vectors. I assume I am doing something wrong. In addition, when selecting the bit, the program has any end mill bits less than 1/8 inch grayed out and not selectable. Any suggestions?

Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/wJlKiLugy5s/видео.html Follow along to this video too: ruclips.net/video/hIzYO-ir4MY/видео.html As for your bit selection, have you made sure that you have your feeds and speeds for those individual tools loaded in the software?

@@IDCWoodcraft hey garrett thanks for the response! i'm just now getting into CNC stuff - your videos are really helpful. it looks you went for a serif font in the end and i'm wondering if there was some CNC-specific reason for that? or just a style choice. also it looks like a different coffee cup -- i'm wondering if you edited the original drawing in vcarve or just found a different image online?
Hi, I have been following you, I am based in NZ and facing two problems, 1. did a 3d model but when restarting the next day from around 50 lines after the last cut, I get different z levels to of around 0.50 mm. 2. after the model is completed the wood hairs appear in places that i cannot reach can you please help and advise me
VJ, when you reset a project like that, the machine typically looses its original position. Its best to do the project 100% in one day and not split it into multiple days.
I have just purchased my new CNC and while I am not totally unfamiliar with the CNC concept and machines, I am not familiar at all with the programming. I watched your tutorial on Vcarve for beginners which I loved and appreciate and I am now following along with this video on making a sign. I have encountered a problem. After making my circle and connecting the Arc and cutting everything away, I try to go to the node mode and delete the vector but not all of the lines connect. The top part of the arc does not go to the dotted line like the rest of the image. I have tried starting over many times but it still does the same thing. In my playing around I have evidentially clicked something or turned something on. Any suggestions as to what my problem is? Thanks
yendorrepooc1005, I recommend taking a look at this video here where I walk you through cutting and joining nodes → ruclips.net/video/kEGxnlfzmNY/видео.html. I think you'll find it super helpful!
Super beginner. Can I ask what the difference is between the Profile Toolpath and the Vcarve toolpath if you are using the same tool (90 degree) for both? Like why couldnt you just do the 90 degree tool for the first outline under the vcarve toolpath with the words? Thank you!!!
Abby, both toolpaths are great and you can use the 90 degree tool for both the profile toolpath and the Vcarve toolpath. The Vcarve toolpath require a closed shape. It changes depth depending on how far apart the side of the shape are. The Profile toolpath follows a vector, and gives you the choice of cutting inside, outside, or ON the vector. Different tools for different jobs my friend.
Bobheadzeek, it stops and you have to load a new gcode file. I recommend checking out this video, I think you'll find it super helpful → ruclips.net/video/AFnDZYYHuFA/видео.html.
Question, I'm new in this and I tried to carve some letters as you did but I'm doing something wrong because my bit its not cutting clean, at the sharp edges is making like a ball finish... I'm using a 60 degree angle bit, I tried to go deeper and ligter on the pressure and I'm still getting the same results, I hope you can help me to figure this out...
Clyde, you could use a 1/2" bit but it would leave a lot of material around the corners of the letters. I would still recommend a 1/4" bit for this project in specific.
Though interesting to watch and there are some things a beginner can take away, but this is not a video designed for a beginner simply because you are racing through the steps. At the beginning of the design you went so quickly through creating the outline that a beginner is not going to know what to click, what tools to use, where to find them unless said student repeatedly watches the actions you made, does a lot of pausing and then guessing in their own Vcarve software. Who cares if it takes 10 minutes or 20 minutes to design. Take the time to clearly point out the steps, the locations of software tools used in Vcarve, the reasoning why you are doing these things and taking these particular steps. I do believe your future videos get more in depth so kudos. Consider redoing these older videos or just removing them.
Thanks Charles for your input. This is one of the earliest videos I created. If you start to watch this channel, you'll see that your suggestions are delivered and very clear step by step, slow for the beginner, type of format. Like this video here. I think this will appeal to you nicely ruclips.net/video/C46zguYGM-o/видео.html

My desk is away from the machine so I export to a flash drive and transfer to another laptop using Universal G-code sender (open source free). A sign this size with this level of work would be about $25-35. It goes with the 'importance' of the sign. An 'hours' sign is not nearly as important as a store name sign. Shoot for them when you can. you can get well over $100 for them.
@@IDCWoodcraft is this really only $35? Is that just what you charge or what the going rate is? It seems way to low, the cost of running the machine, wear on tools, wood and finishing consumables, then the labor including packing it to ship looks like that would add up to a McDonald’s hourly wage.
@@Dogpool the sign was lightning fact to design and make. However, you're right, it would be more like $50 for a custom sign. Shopping is added to that price. Shipping charges are always cost x 2

Hi Margaret. Yes, I have learned since then. This was actually a very early video. Now I zoom in on buttons to show them.

You make it very easy to understand. I'm chewing at the bit for a CNC to arrive soon I hope. I cut my first sign today on a Maker Space CNC. Thanks again for all that you do to help others become successful.
Hi Larry. A maker, huh? I'd love to see that. In fact, I've thought about getting one myself. How do you like it?
@@IDCWoodcraft Not enough time available at maker space except for the occasional prototype. Sometime within the next 90 days I hope to have a ShopSabre 23 safely inside my garage. I've looked at a dozen models and brands but this is my number choice. I'll do a video once it arrives.
Thank you Garett

As for software for lasers, you'll likely want to use the Lightburn software.
fantastic video , super informative ,much thanks!!

Hi Jim. thankn you.
Great for all the videos posted, very detailed but how do you actually send it to the router after calculating the paths?

I have found the same complaint by others on the forum. Any solutions?
If you're software won't close vectors, then there's something wrong. You'll need to contact Vectric over that.
I like the video, my only comment is that if you would have use toolpath color for the Vcarve to highlight the cut..
Hi Harvey. Yes, I could have. It wasn't necessary for a simple job.

I am curious how this would leverage that. Do you run them as separate GCODE files for the various tools and steps to create the finished product?

Different tools for different jobs my friend.
what does the control software do when you have to change bits?

What other media can you use instead of wood on the CNC? I'm not a big fan of the wood as it breaks down quickly and bends and chips and smells.
Hey Joshua, you can always do acrylic or ACM or PVC
Does it matter if it is a 1/2 inch bit or can you use a 1/4 inch bit?

Hi, great video. Quick question, how much would be the perfect price to sell these? Thanks :)
A sign this size with this level of work would be about $25-35. It goes with the 'importance' of the sign. An 'hours' sign is not nearly as important as a store name sign. Shoot for them when you can. you can get well over $100 for them.

ssddcc, sorry I didn't include all the details on this one my friend. It's a little tricky to explain in detail over comment though, I recommend joining our weekly RUclips live session and I should be help you then. We host every Wednesday at 8PM EST, hope to see you there!
