  • This is a compilation video of the experience I had with my son, (who is an Eagle Scout), 7 boy scouts and 3 adult advisors in the trip of a lifetime to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in June of 2023. A trip I will never forget!
I had no idea what to expect, this was my first time backpacking out in the wilderness. We have done many primitive camp outings in the past, but never before in the backcountry.
This was quite the challenge! Our itinerary was 12 days, 84 miles, but that was "map" miles, and did not account for the elevation changes, so overall, we hiked a total of 122 miles over the course of 12 days.
The landscape was incredible, with postcard views in every single direction. We also had great weather, no rain except for a little sprinkle here and there, but for the most part, it was dry. Temperatures got up to a hot 90 to 100 degrees during the day, and quickly dropped down to temperatures of around 35 to 50 degrees at night.
We saw an abundance of wildlife, such as, bear, mule deer and pronghorn antelope. Even though the area is known for it's dense population of mountain lions, we did not see any (thankfully)!
    More from the web:
Nestled in the rugged mountains of northeastern New Mexico, Philmont Scout Ranch stands as a testament to the spirit of adventure and the pursuit of personal growth. With its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and unparalleled outdoor experiences, Philmont has captivated the hearts and minds of countless scouts and outdoor enthusiasts.
Philmont offers a diverse range of activities that cater to different interests and skill levels. From backpacking along the rugged trails of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to rock climbing to horse back riding and mountain biking, Philmont provides participants with opportunities to challenge themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. The ranches vast wilderness, spanning over 140,000 acres, boasts awe-inspiring landscapes, including alpine meadows, towering peaks, pristine lakes, and deep canyons, creating an ideal setting for exploration and self-discovery.
One of the most compelling reasons to visit is its renowned High Adventure Programs. These immersive experiences allow scouts and leaders to embark on multi-day treks, testing their skills and pushing their limits. Along the way, they will navigate challenging terrain, set up camp under star lit skies, participate in conservation projects, and bond with their fellow adventurers. These treks foster teamwork, resilience, and self reliance while instilling a deep appreciation for nature and the importance of conservation.

Sioux Camp? Comanche, Jicarilla, white Mountain, Taos, Tiwa even. But where were the Sioux in this part of the State?

Without looking it up, I'm not too sure. That was the name of the camp. I'm pretty sure there is a council within the BSA that is called Sioux council, maybe they carried the name over?
