I was a cashier for a while. Had some of these "same" people like in the video check out in my lane, and when I stated the total, they gave me the right bills but then just dumped some change in my hand and started to leave. They were short by quite a bit (on the change). When I politely mentioned how much they had left, they just kept saying, "That's okay," as if THEY could tell ME that it was okay they didn't have enough change. I wonder now if they couldn't count change either. They took the change back and gave me another bill. I tell you. I've seen it on both sides of the counter. 🤦♀
My drink at the store is $0.85 after tax. It blows their mind when I give them $1.10, trying to get rid of pennies and nickels in my pocket.

Took $20 out after paying for my groceries at Walmart. Asked the cashier for 1 ten dollar bill and 10 one dollar bills. She gave me 10 ten dollar bills and 1 one dollar bill. I looked at the lady standing behind me and looked at the cashier and kindly told her actually held up the bills and said I only wanted 1 of these (10 dollar bill) and 10 of these (one dollar bill), you gave me over $100, and I only wanted $20. I fear for this generation.
Same at Trade Joe's. Older man (happened to be black and clearly a foreigner)...I had to help him count back my change. It took three corrections before he got it right. I would have complained to mgmt, but I was in a hurry. I have not seen him since. I would venture to say that he came up short in his till once too many times and was relieved of his duties.
Correcting them is racist, they're smart, stunning, and totally qualified for these jobs. Take your extra cash and thank them for their service.

Kevin’s right. She came to work with a chip on her shoulders. It’s tough out here and she had an attitude and didn’t want to take the time to count his coins. Service workers never want to count change. Cant even put 100 pennie’s in a $1 drink machine.

In the low income schools, parents also have the additional advantage of getting the “CRAZY CHECK” (that’s what they call it here in Mississippi) if their kids can’t pass in school. They know the government pays when a child has learning issues so they encourage kids to stay ignorant through school in order to get the money.

I worked at WM for several years part time, and it was insane how little the younger employees did.
But it is not their fault, the managers would walk by, (when they themselves weren't out side on smoke break) and say nothing to them while they just stood there and looked at their phones for hours on end.

Early 80’s to graduate high school we had to pass a class that among other things taught us how to balance a check book figure out a budget , create a resume.

Yeah but that also starts at home. My mom was just a high school grad and my dad only finished grade school in the Philippines. But they both worked hard and were there for us when he had homework and other assignments. Blaming the school doesn't achieve anything; you still need to put in the work. Parents are still responsible for their children and not the state.

We've had eftpos (debit cards in shops en masse) since the mid 80s, but we were still, are still able to count money. They teach this in in the 1st year of school and preschool, right after basic counting. Its adding and subtracting.

Businesses do have the right to restrict the forms of payment they accept. If someone has a $100+ bill to pay, I won’t accept one of my employees or myself having to count it out from small coins. Obviously the guy in the video didn’t have anywhere near an unreasonable amount.
@@rhettmeyers474 31 USC 5103 federal code states "All coins and currency are legal tender for ALL debts, public charges, taxes, or dues". . . this means that if I owe a company that didn't explicitly express their policy beforehand and I wish to pay them in coins, they can choose not to accept; but they are accepting a zero payment for doing so. This is a federal law, and states can have their own laws regarding such payments. In many states, if the business's policy is stated before the service is purchased, then the payee has to follow those rules as they have not yet received the service. So, you are absolutely correct in that businesses can have their own policies, but those policies still have to reflect state and federal laws and have to be explicitly shown before providing the service. A good example of this is when a HOA in Virginia refused to accept pennies for a fine of $500 but was either forced to accept the payment or accept a zero payment and clear the fine, as they never had any policy to begin with. Hopefully, you live in a state whose laws detail an acceptable coin to payment ratio/display of acceptable business tender or you may be having to accept zero payments if someone chose to pay with coins for +$100 bill and just walked out of your business.

It wasn't change back I don't think. The guy was trying to pay in coins and she was too lazy to try and count it to make sure it was the right amount so she told him it wasn't her job. Not sure she doesn't know how to count but more she was too lazy and just wants everyone to do her job for her by using the card reader.

I really don't know what the hell they are teaching kids in school these days. It became an issue in my life, when my grand daughter in high school, came home one day and announced to her dad that she was a lesbian. Six years later, a high school graduate, and now with work experience in the real world, she is happily married, to a guy ... and a few months ago gave birth to my great grand son. But school taught her it was okay, and even cool to be a lesbian, so she made the conscious decision to announce to her dad, that she was a lesbian.

If she truly cannot count change, I feel sorry for her. My first job in 1986, was in a grocery store as a checker. I didn’t know how to properly count change back. If I entered the amount they paid me and then they gave me change too, I would be lost. One of the older checkers took me aside and taught me how to correctly count back change so I could always double check myself that way too. It was the best life lesson ever given to me. I was not taught any of that or how to balance a check book in school.
Unfortunately more businesses are going cashless because the employees don’t know how to count money. Knotts berry farms being one of them.

Most of the stores I go to show on the cash register how much change to give the customer.
And yet, some people still can't count back change. I have seen it. Teen workers that just freeze up because they don't know how to count up 41 cents 🤦
Even if the register gives the total, the cashier still has to count it out. There's a video on youtube asking college students the value of coins. Some of them don't know that a dime is ten cents, or how many dimes it takes to equal $1. If they know a quarter is 25 cents, they'll tell you a quarter of an hour is 25 minutes.

I worked at a big department store as the checkout supervisor 40 years ago. 1st - No earbuds or personal music players were allowed on any employees. 2nd - I came across many young people who did not know how to count or make change. These were high school students and graduates. It's sad to see our education system is still failing our children.

Sometimes we don’t even know it! I thought me working 2 jobs for them to have a decent life was teaching them. Apparently learn from example missed the mark. But they’re good kids, just hard to adjust to mommy doing everything, to them having to do for themselves. Now that they are mid 20s they are figuring it out.

As an ex-cashier where we did not have a register, it's amazing the amount of people, especially younger people who cannot count change. They rely on whatever the machine tells them to give back in change. Kids used to be taught how to count with change, especially if you wanted the candy from the store.
I graduated with 3 people that couldn't read.... How did they pass 2nd grade? I ask one of them, how they pass? They had no clue. Just stayed quiet.
They think an hour is 100 minutes and there are 50 dimes in a dollar, even the college students.
I know someone who is a retail manager at Magic Kingdom. They employ thousands of college students with their college program, that let's college kids come work while earning credits. A good 80% of them, do not know the difference between a dime and a nickel. They are unable to properly count out any amount of change, even though the registers tell them exactly how much change is needed. Others have not known how to use an analog clock. This one kid literally had on an analog watch and when asked for the time, he did not know how to read his own watch. Without their phones, they are lost. Many of them show up and have all these issues too, like one girl refused to stand for more than 30 minutes and another refused to be in the sun and another guy refused to lift anything more than five pounds. They're all entitled nimrods and they're not allowed to be fired, so the older workers have to pick up their slack to keep things running smooth.

I do that all the time to make easier change to give. You would be surprised the amount of people that get very very confused and tell me that’s too much. I just politely explain that I’m giving you that amount so that easier change can be given. It’s more efficient.
What's interesting is it was never like this before. Since I worked a register in high school and part of college I always tried to make it easier on cashiers by making the change they needed to give minimal (like plenty of good people did for me when I was on that job). Only a few times over the course of years did I ever have to explain how much change they give me.
Not anymore. Since my community is now enjoying all of the enrichment of the "culture" of ones like the intellectual giant in charge of the tobacco at walmart, I constantly have to explain/do the math for people who don't know how to do basic addition and subtraction. And more and more they are visibly upset by this, despite it often being for their own sake so they don't have to explain why their register is $40 short. And I will continue to do this and pay with cash primarily because I refuse and rebuke this "cashless society" they want to create.
But why?

FR I ordered from a place 40 mins before they close, I hear over the speaker a black woman loudly screaming "why tf are they ordering all this shit, we about to close" lmao, they then proceeded to make me, and 3 other cars wait 30 min to get our food and they even tried to leave items out so they could lock up and eat our shit.

Definitely a culture gap, but most try to be kind no matter color. I'd guess like 25% of black ppl here in SC dislike white people in general. The black ladies that are 45+ with the "money mindset" are usually very racist.
