    Update: The Q12 is not to be seen as an UPGRADE to the K688’s own built-in audio interface, which is arguably better because it has no interference/static.
    This video was released right after I got the K688 and when it appeared that the pops and clicks on it were due to its internal parts. I even bought a second K688 and the distortion persisted in that one.
    I later found it that the issue was that the included cable in the K688 was a USB 2.0 cable. You need to get a USB 3.0 cable. (Note: USB-C is just the shape of the connector but does NOT guarantee USB 3.0 speeds. The included one had a Type-C end but was 2.0).
    However, the Q12 is still a handy interface to have, as it lets you play back your computer audio, record more than one mic input, and is relatively more affordable versus higher-end interfaces so you can become familiar with how an interface works. I know I avoided interfaces for years and stuck to USB mics. If the Q12 at least lets you understand how they work, and gives you the courage to get a better interface later, for $29, the added features and learning should make it worth it in the long run.
    If you want the first true upgrade to the K688, consider the Behringer UMC204 HD which has better preamps than the Q12 and converts the audio into 24-bit. If your use case is just gaming, you may not need that upgrade at all if you aren’t picky. For recordings, 24-bit gives you less distortion when you edit in post, a lower-noise floor, and more dynamic range.
    For a major upgrade to an interface with better preamps and features, consider the Vocaster One or 2 for podcasting, streaming, and content, as they have EQ in software and great preamps. For recording, there’s the Motu M2. I’ve used it around the clock for 3 years for all my professional voice over applications. My musician wife uses an SSL 2+, which performs similarly.
    Here’s my review of the Vocaster 2, which sounds as good as the Vocaster One: ruclips.net/video/DJFChOch2Mo/видео.htmlsi=lk-LqATooC4wwn-G

    Just so everyone knows what Dave is using is a mixer. When it comes to solo livestreaming or podcasting mixers are good enough. But if you want to record two audios and treat them as two separate tracks well you can't with a cheap mixer. There's a difference between an audio interface vs mixer. This Teyun is a cheap mixer and all input sound is mixed into 1 track. Only the more expensive multichannel mixers has multitrack/multichannel recording. An audio interface that has 2 inputs at minimum are treated as two separate tracks. Here's a scenario, for example, you have a podcast with a guest and both of you have individual mics, if you are using an audio interface with 2 inputs, your voice will be recorded as track 1 while your guest's mic will be on track 2, and each can be edited separately. If using a mixer, the sound from both mics will be mixed as track 1 and so you can't edit the two voices separately. Here's another scenario, you want to record a song while you are singing and playing an instrument at the same time. With an audio interface like Focusrite or Behringer your vocals and the instrument sound will be on separate tracks, but with a mixer both your vocals and the instrument sound will be mixed as one track, thus making it near impossible to edit the voice and instrument sound separately.
    If you are looking to record audio into separate tracks always look for multichannel or multitrack recording feature on any audio interface or mixer.
    Update: So Dave just checked if Teyun records separate tracks, and what do you know this mixer does! I stand corrected!

    • @DaveSoltura
      @DaveSoltura  Год назад +4

      Can the Teyun Q12 record separate tracks? #audio #fifinek688 #microphone

    • @Mark_Sings
      @Mark_Sings Год назад +4

      @@DaveSoltura I stand corrected! Good to know that it CAN simultaneously separate tracks by pushing the ST Pan or To Stereo button before recording. Recent mixers from China has really gone a long way. Most cheap mixers cannot do multichannel recording hence the need for audio interfaces (or mixers with multi channel recording/stereo pan) to get a clean separate signal.

    • @Mark_Sings
      @Mark_Sings Год назад +2

      @@DaveSoltura Oh and this new reply is just further clarification for everybody to read. Just to expand on the limited capabilities of budget multichannel USB mixers that are more pricey than the Teyun Q12. Most (not all) budget USB mixers has a pan knob that does the same job as the ST Pan button on the Teyun Q12. You CAN record and separate a stereo mix into separate left and right mono signals but there are limitations when recording mixers via USB . Most mixers (not all) can only record 1 stereo track or push 2 separate output tracks since this is still a stereo mix even if you pan all channels left and right to separate the signals (2 mono in 1 stereo mix). A 4/6 input channel USB mixer can only push out a 2 output signal to the PC via USB ; you can do 2 channel in and 2 channel out but not a 4/6 channel in and 4/6 channel out. Audio interface doesn't have this stereo output limitation, you can record separate tracks at the same time, you are only limited to how many input channels you've got. Here's an article for full explanation: www.musicrepo.com/audio-interface-vs-mixer/
      If mixer is still your thing, there are multichannel USB mixers out there than can do both worlds, hands-on hardware control and multichannel separate track recording via USB, just look at the manual or product description if it has this feature. Here are some: thehomerecordings.com/mixers-usb-multitrack/

    I have a Teyun Q-12 and used instruments(Electric Bass) for it and its too quiet even with the highest gain and clips too much, when recording its not the sound you expect because i can't get the tone i want which has many effects. If you go overboard just a tiny bit white noise is apparent, its okay for guitars not for bass because of its low fequencies. For microphones and etc it does it job but definitely not for high quality audio which i believed in, its a great mini mixer to add your xlr mics in your desktop you can always adjust your gain in windows or Voicemeeter, Just don't buy it if you want a clear sound quality for recording and just save up and get a better one like focusrite or behringer
    Not gonna lie, its a trap for home recording BUT i suggest buying it first to know the basics of handling and working out an audio interface because its a whole mountain to climb tbh
    Edit: TIps for Buying Audio Interfaces
    - Even with a high quality brand there are certain models that are just bad
    - I suggest buying a consistent model or 2nd or 3rd model down
    - 2nd hand, please i suggest testing it yourself from recording , monitoring and latency, scratches dont matter its not a guitar anyways. Always ask the condition and problems for the audio interface.

      I do have two with their own AC power supply. Works most of the time, but they do fail at times when they’re overloaded! Had to redo some recording sessions just because they failed on me.
      In general, it’s good form to have fewer cables so as not to extend the signal chain. Every extra device is like adding a layer of slightly tinted glass, resulting in a blurrier image.

If you want to use it as a usb connector for your recording, it does it's job really well, but since the design is simplistic and minimalistic and its only features are gain and volume control I would suggest that you should pair it with a multi channel audio mixer or a soundcard that has vocal effects on it like reverb.

    • @DaveSoltura
      @DaveSoltura  Год назад

      Hello! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment on this channel.
      I had a look at your videos and compared them.
      You can dramatically improve the K688's signal-to-noise ratio/noise performance, by getting very close to the mic itself.
      An article on Sweetwater states,
      "each time you double the distance between your sound source and a listener or microphone, the power of the audio drops by 75% - a fairly significant amount! " (See www.sweetwater.com/insync/inverse-square-law/)
      So once your mouth is much closer to the mic, this boosts the overall volume by a lot... which means when you normalize your audio, the static would be significantly weaker, and can easily be wiped clean using simple noise reduction.
      The solution isn't perfect, but it's still an incredible value for the price.
      Feel free to check out my other video on mic technique, so your audio volume can sound loud, and your background noise will be much quieter:

    • @DaveSoltura
      @DaveSoltura  Год назад

      Thanks for your thoughts! I felt the same way years ago and was very intimidated by the idea. Basically, USB mics are tiny “XLR boxes,” so it’s kind of like having a phone camera, versus a “professional camera.” Audio interfaces (your XLR boxes) have much beefier preamps (think camera sensors, or bigger car engines) inside of them. Ultimately, you get far superior sound quality for professional use, depending on which interface you pick. But as you said, new USB mics do have the advantage of convenience, and many of them are getting so close to the level of having a dedicated audio interface. To temper that, I’ve yet to see any USB mic match the Neumann U87 head-to-head. :)

    • @choppergirl

      @@DaveSoltura The problem is, if I bought an XLR box, it would be the cheapest one available, for $30? SO I'm thinking,t hat's not really an upgrade to a Get you by chip on the inside of the mic. And I already have a rat's nest of cables as it is and no space left on my desk for a little box with extra controls.
      And I don't need a second or multiple audio source inputs, which I think is mostly what an XLR is... a mixer? My comptuer does all that in Windows.
      XLR seems like a hold over from the past when DJ's and others strung together an audio setup using dedicated little boxes with lots of slider bars in a sound studio or radio DJ room...
      If I could see better I'd use a teleprompter, but I'll probably try to just cut and splice sentences together and slice out bad parts in Audacity.

      Hi! If you really want quality, and money is not a concern, go for the Motu M2. You won't need a cloudlifter or additional sources of gain to power the mic with it. It won't have the audible interference, and it'll be futureproofed. For many people, that can very well be their last audio interface, until it needs to be replaced. Mine has served me well for more than 2 years now.

      Right now, the Fifine SC1 is a significant jump from the Teyun, at around $54.99.
      But you can also find the Focusrite Vocaster One, or Presonus Revelator io24 interfaces at $99 (they both used to be $200). Those 2 interfaces are also a great step up from the Fifine SC1.

But when I talk you can hear some sort of interference or it almost sounds as if a fan is blowing when I speak. Do I need to turn my gains all the way down and boost in OBS. I cannot for the life of me get audio sounding nearly as good as yours for live-streaming purposes.

    • @DaveSoltura
      @DaveSoltura  Год назад +2

      Hi there!
      The interface really does have a bit of interference as I mentioned, but you can minimize this by maximizing your signal-to-noise ratio.
      I had a look at your channel and saw some of your videos. Your mouth is usually about a span away from the mic, which is quite far.
      When your mouth gets to about 3 inches away from the mic, that's when it would sound loudest, so when you boost it in OBS, the interference isn't boosted nearly as much.

      Thank you for the kind words, and it sucks that it isn’t working… have you tried raising the gain knob, and is phantom power off? I would also try listening to the mic via the monitors, so you can determine if the issue is between the mic and the interface, or between the interface and the pc. If you can hear it via the monitors, then it likely has to do with the connection to the pc.

    • @parachute

      @@DaveSoltura yep, I've tried both of those things - playing with all of the knobs, listening for sound, ensuring phantom power is off etc. I noticed the mute button light isn't coming on at all when connecting to the interface via xlr so maybe it's just not getting power at all.
      My next step I guess would be to get a different xlr cable, because my PC recognizes the interface when it's plugged in so it seems like the disconnect could be there like you said. Or possibly do you think that the USB cable itself connecting the interface to the PC is having problems? Either way those are fairly cheap solutions I'm going to try today!

    • @DaveSoltura
