  • Jennn_errator from Women In Vinyl started her annual May Vinyl Challenge on Instagram. She curates a topic for each day of the month and has the community respond. I decided that if I'm going to do Instagram, I could just as easily (yeah right) do a video here as well. So each day I'm going to post on Instagram and here. Please consider participating on Instagram #mayvinylchallenge and here as well if you're up for it.

Day 8! Will you make all 31?!
I couldn’t care less about colored vinyl and never buy picture discs. I’m with you on that.

I think so. I tend to do them in batches, but it still takes more time than I anticipated.

    Same here
Don’t care for color or picture
But by coincidence the only one I have is Orange vinyl too
    Shins : Chutes Too Narrow
Years ago i bought a copy of Marriage of Figaro box set at a flea market for 1 Pound
It was 4 vinyl albums but only 7 sides the music
Side 8 had an etching of HMV logo
    Dog listening to Gramophone
    That was really cool

I’ve wondered about the sound quality on colored vinyl, I have a few that come to mind that seem to have a lot of surface nose. I’d always heard the sound quality of picture discs is terrible, it’s more of a collectible thing I guess. Once I picked up a picture disc of Boston’s first album on picture disc that was super cheap, in a clearance bin but I’ve never listened to it, I think it was more in a moment of irony, it’s one of those albums that I feel like I never need to hear again but maybe I’ll give it a spin one day. I don’t seek out colored vinyl but many records I’ve bought happen to be available that way and some of them are quite beautiful but I’m pretty content with black vinyl for the most part. When I bought a vinyl copy of Westerberg/Grandpa Boy’s Stereo/Mono it had a hype sticker that said “180g Black Vinyl” which felt like his brand of humor to mention it was black vinyl although it was just stating the facts. Also, it was an RSD Black Friday release so it all makes sense now.

    Good Evening,
What happens if you find out that an album that you like has a variant priniting of 500, would the "possible collectibility/rarity" aspect mean anything to you?
    Thank you.

It really doesn’t. I mean if I knew it was going to be worth so much I could sell it and purchase 20 other records, yeah I’d do it. Or If I thought it would sound better. Sometimes the alternative art matters, like with Hackney Diamonds. And of course, the right hype could get me once in a while. But in general I’m just not into that part of record buying. I’d rather buy something I don’t have already.
