It's a VC reunion of sorts. The Long Cut drove up from California to stay with us for a couple of days. We went to Janku Land in Tacoma and then met up with Mazzy for beers and pizza at E9 in Tacoma. Later when we got back to our place we decided to make a video with no clear agenda. This is what happened. I got this idea from Fitz Electric Bar when he did his video of songs he's grateful for in celebration of Canadian Thanksgiving. Wussy- Cincinnati, OH and the EPs

Wussy is one of the best rock and roll bands out there. It's very rare as you get older to completely fall for a newer band like you did when you were younger, but that's exactly what happened to me around the time of their 2014 album, Attica. Recently Wussy lost a band member and a lot of us feared that they may never return with new material. How wrong we were. It's been six years, but now we...

To say that Jane's Addiction were an important band for me is a huge understatement. For a while they seemed like the only band that mattered. I understand Dylan fans being enthralled by the portrayal. But even for those who are not Dylan fans it's a wonderful portrayal of a man who remains a complete unknown. And it does a terrific job of setting the film in its cultural and historical context while remaining focused on the character. Unrelated, I saw what I would call the only open and true interview of Dylan, done, funnily enough, by the mainstream media. I think the interviewer's name is Bob Brown, and he interviewed Dylan on Dylan's home in Malibu. Dylan seems like he let down the facade for this one. You might want to check it out.

Completely agree with your take - nothing new learned because I am a Dylan nerd, but the acting was so strong in all instances. The director had to make choices and they were mostly well chosen. My one complaint that they were not able to use Suze Rotolo’s real name, but she was very well depicted. Great movie - gonna see it a second time as well.

Love the film. I’m not a super emotional person, but I teared up at the beginning. Just seeing what I knew of the history of Dylan was going to be represented so well. And as the movie went on, I was able to settle in to it. Not expecting every aspect of Dylan’s life to be completely accurate, but it was close. My wife and I plan on seeing it again while it’s still in theaters. As a Dylan fan, I thought it was great.

I enjoyed the movie. There are a lot of folks picking at this, Mangold had to make choices to fit the story in two hours. Elijah Wald, who wrote the book the movie is based on, says the feel is right even if some of the facts aren’t quite right. It’s a movie. If you want a documentary go elsewhere. Even they can be misleading. The folks who edited the Newport 65 performance documentary moved the audio of the boos to parts of the performance. The tapes are available to anyone at the Library of Congress if you want to check that.

I thought a very good book of the time was David Hajdu's Positively 4th Street. The lives and times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina. Re: the movie, it had to be Bob's input that changed Suze to Sylvie. They wouldn't have done that without his approval or suggestion. Which gets me to the point: movie making and song writing involve separate talents. Bob's not a movie maker. The car stops, and I'm told to get out. Fair enough.

You echoed a lot of my own feelings. Hit me emotionally as well, finally seeing the story unfold on screen. The sound and art direction make this worth seeing in a theater. I also found it easy to suspend disbelief in the scenes that were obviously manufactured; they somehow blend into and support the real bits. I also tend to think that Mr. Dylan would not have issues with the approach, given his own past embellishments of his life (they even worked that habit nicely into the apartment scene with Joan). Singing by these actors was amazing and I was very surprised how effective Barbaro was as Baez. A minor complaint would be the way the story sometimes hastily introduces some characters and their pivotal roles just for completeness, such as Neuwirth and Kooper. Very positive experience overall.

I had a similar reaction to the film. What it may have lacked in deep character study, it more than made up for in acting, atmosphere and music. Like you, I was sold almost immediately and was totally immersed after the first couple scenes. And I found those Woody scenes emotionally powerful. Talk about great acting (by the Guthrie character) in the absence of any dialogue. I arrived last minute to the cinema, nearly sold out, so it was a fun, fully shared theatre experience. As good as Chalamet was, I still think Cate Blanchet has been the most dynamic and best acted dramatized Dylan on film. I hope this film creates a resurgence of interest in real, organic music and songwriting among young folk today, who seem a bit adrift in a vapid music industry dominated by technology, autotune and overproduction. As always, I enjoyed your take.

But the song selections weren’t the greatest. “Pawn in their game” and “Lonesome death of Hattie Carroll” not featured at all. “It’s alright Ma I’m only bleeding” was only hummed for about 20 seconds. These I believe are his 3 greatest songs during that time period. Wish they got play. Tambourine Man was played in the background for only about 30 seconds. It was basically Blowin in the wind, times are a changing and then his duet songs with Baez, were the main ones. And of course like a rolling stone.

I lived and breathed his poetry and remained amazed by his spontaneous nature... ..tried to get into to see this film but it's sold out where I live. It was really good! I saw it last night on NYE. I told my wife that I wanted to clap almost after every performance when anyone was performing in front of an audience. Like I was a part of the audience in the movie. Edward Norton’s performance of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was really good! I think Chalamet knocked it out of the park. His performance was great without seeming forced. My only gripe might be that the woman playing Joan Baez could have given a little more effort to sound like Joan when talking. There is a longstanding legend about the ‘65 Newport performance, that Pete Seeger supposedly tried to cut the power to the stage during Dylan’s electric set by actually trying to cut the power cable with an axe. This has been pretty much debunked in more recent years, and in fact would have been wildly out of character for the depiction of Pete Seeger we get throughout the rest of the film, but even so, I liked the brief nod the film gave to the old myth, almost as a wink to the audience.

I had some reservations because I was not a fan of Walk the Line. I really enjoy many of James Mangold’s other films but was concerned that maybe he’s just not a great musician biopic director? But, man, this far surpassed my expectations. Was so glad it brought something different than No Direction Home and I’m Not There. The casting was incredible, the performances even better. Loved some of the artist references that were purely for music geeks. It also held a great narrative, and seamlessly introduced new “characters” in such a brilliant way. The liberty they took with actual history did not bother me. Sometimes this has to be done for the sake of art. Glad you enjoyed it. The only thing I wish they had done was give Chalamet some blue contact lenses. That's really nitpicky though. I liked that they didn't depict Dylan as a saint. He's not a saint, nor is he a villain. They also did a very good job of showing how quickly he evolved and moved forward, and how he didn't just fall into his success. He was ambitious, and he was driven.
