Im no expert on Jazz so my likes are definitely pure and honest and not influenced ( too much ) by critics I do like meditative instrumental musics Heres 5 Jazz Albums i do own and listen to 1 keith Jarrett : The Koln Concert Everything about this how it came in to existence , the improvisation etc , Perfect 2 Promises : Floating Points and Pharoh Sanders ( actually not sure of ambient or jazz ) Pharoh’s last album 3 Sketches of Spain : Miles Davis I love Concerto D’aranquez and to hear miles its just beautiful 4. Time Out / Time Further Out Dave Brubeck and his amazing quartet and i love to clap along with Unsquare Dance and one of these days i will get it right 5. Donald Byrd : A New Perspective Great playing and coolest cover ever And big shot out to Charles Schultz and Vince Guardali for keeping jazz alive for every generation to come
As much as my taste in jazz has evolved in more recent years, Kind of Blue will always be an album I never tire of. I don’t need an audiophile copy to validate that, but I sure as hell would love the opportunity to hear that UHQR.
You make a great point about the backup players getting a mention on the cover. Rock/pop solo artists should do that. I have 3 Bill Frisell CDs from the 90s that I put on when I'm in the mood. It's nice guitar oriented jazz and of course modern. But I enjoy them
Very enjoyable and I relate to your jazz perspective. My interests have “developed” and grown a little bit over the years but get easily turned off by the honking and chaotic quality of a big chunk of jazz. That description of Jazz- about it being like throwing instruments down the stairs- is exactly what turns me off. Sometimes I think I am pretty much into the ballads and blues-based jazz only. Anyway, familiar with the Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and, of course, Miles’ record but will need to give the Kenny Burrell and Dexter Gordon records a listen.
My own attitude to jazz is similar to yours so I found this fascinating. Mood is everything. Others to recommend of similar vein- Gerry Mulligan Night Lights, Bill Evans Waltz for Debby, Art Blakey Moanin', Lee Morgan Sidewinder. That Kenny Burrell is great, but also try Idle Moments by Grant Green too❤
@@lostmixtapes sorry my suggestion for a "grabber reacher with a rotating jaw" took up more space than the liner notes to a "history of blue note" box set. i didn't think it was going to post and in order to view it, you have to leave you tube. if i knew how to remove it, i would. all apologies.
Im the same, im all about the "feels" i don't care about technical virtuosity or how fast someone can play or what vocal gymnastics they can do, most jazz to me just sounds the same, i could live with 10 jazz albums and id have the gist of the entire genre, i don't need 200 jazz albums that all offer the same feeling
Are there any living musicians playing jazz? Almost every music video I watch where the presenter talks about his or her favorite jazz albums it seems it's always the same 8 or 10. I just wonder if all jazz is 50 years old and all musicians playing jazz are dead. Smashing choices, by the way, these are incredible records.
Nice overview, and we overlap quite a bit when it comes to the 'moods' of jazz to pick and choose from. Ballads was pretty much my intro to John Coltrane (along with My Favorite Things), and Kind of Blue needs no explanation. In the same vein for me is Oscar Peterson solo (his Verve series of 'plays the Harold Arlen Songbook'; 'plays the Cole Porter Songbook', etc.) and the Oscar Peterson Trio (particularly Live in Chicago). Thanks for putting this out there! Good stuff!
All great-great albums. If I had to pick just five, this list works for me.
We are in the exact same category of “jazz listeners”. I own all of these albums and couldn’t agree more. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the recommendations. Vince…yes!

Nice choices! Enjoyed your video
Thanks!

Pretty much like everything I’ve heard from Bill Frisell.
I love Dave Holland Quintet - Prime Directive and Charlie Hunter Trio - Friends Seen and Unseen
I’ll check those out, thanks.

Yeah…anything that fits that description usually doesn’t agree with me.

Wow, thanks for all of the suggestions. I think we have a few of those. I’ll pull them out.

Thanks, I like Bill Frisell quite a bit. Contemporary jazz guitarist. Super prolific in numerous combos. Valentine is a good one.
They are very-very much around and alive.
My 3 favorite jazz albums are Brilliant Corners, Thelonious Himself and Monk's Music. See what I'm getting at?
One must not "dabble" in jazz.
One must immerse.
Cool selection.
Peace on earth.
