Know what you can do, and know what you can't do.
      And take your time.
It was true 30 years ago, and it's still true now. The only limit of how good digital effects look is not the hardware you are working with, but the time you're given until the result has to be handed in.
Terminator 2 and Jurasic Park still look great, because the creators of the movies knew that this was going to be difficult and expensive, and they would have to take a lot of care and time, and plan out everything from the start before they shot anything.
Today, movie creators often go with "Eh, have some guys do poses in front of a green screen and then let the CG people add everything in two weeks."

    • @Nergalsama01
      @Nergalsama01 3 года назад +6

Oh yeah. It's the right blend of practical effects work and CGI. I just love movies like this where you know that most of the stuff was actually there. You know, stunt verhicles getting trashed or that awesome motorcycle jump. But at the same time, the crew obviously devoted a LOT of attention to the implementation of the CG elements. And it simply holds up.

The Abyss doesn't exist without Tron, Last Starfighter and Young Sherlock Holmes. Terminator 2 was the film to get the CGI ball rolling. The T1000 CGI was vital to it's storytelling, and could not be cut from the film. The effects in the Abyss however, could if they hadn't have worked.

  • @wiredtardis

I will never get the hate of Edward Furlong in this role. He was always more relatable to me than most kids on-screen. Most Spielberg kid protagonists always felt a little shallow, inactive, or two-dimensional (Timmy from Jurassic Park, Jack from Hook, Short Round from Temple of Doom, etc.). Elliot from E.T. never quite connected despite all the on-paper elements that say it should work. McCauley Culkin movies were fun, but those movies and characters were more like a sugar rush with no staying power.
There might be better selection of child acting to find nowadays, and it might be the role more than the performance, but it was hard in those days to find another kid actor in our catalog that didn't have some kind of barrier of disbelief.

Overall definitely one of my top action movies from the 90's. I mean this was my jam when i was a teenager!! Saw this in the theaters when it first came out, such an experience! This and Jurassic Park. Nothing can replicate those types of theater experiences anymore in my opinion!

In one episode they are investigating a person, named Ray Pierce, and Dana Scully suggests that "his entire cellular makeup was affected by exposure to some non-identifiable contaminant-- a metal."
To which Robert Patrick's character responds with:
"What are you saying? Ray Pearce has become some kind of metal man? Because that only happens in the movies, Agent Scully."

    A couple of facts:
The actor for the T-1000, Robert Patrick, actually caught Edward Furlong when he was being chased by him in the car park, on the bike in the first take. And then the second take, he nearly caught him again.
Robert Patrick also got the part of the T-1000 by staring into the camera for about 5 minutes without blinking, which unnerved James Cameron so much he cast him.
The T-1000 only blinked 4 times during the whole film.
When the T-1000 is flying the helicopter, in one scene you will see he is holding a gun, flying the helicopter, and loading the gun with a third hand, meaning he made a third hand.
The cop in the hospital that Sarah Connor was in who was killed by the T-1000, that was not special effects, that was his twin brother. Linda Hamilton's double in the factory was also her twin who unfortunately passed away in 2020.

In the script and in the extended cut, it doesn't survive the nitrogen unscathed, it can barely hold a form. In the longer version, it's actually not "instinct" that confirms to John that T-1000 is impersonating Sarah; its feet are literally melting into the floor. They removed most of those elements from the final cut but left the 'shimmer', probably because it looked creepy.

Fun fact: the woman who played the stepmother also played the female marine in the Aliens movie. The red headed kid was in the 90s tv series Salute Your Shorts as the bully named Budnick and he was the voice of the Stoop Kid in Hey Arnold. Another fun fact: the actor who played the guard that got stabbed in the face has an identical twin which how they got the side by side shot of the T1000 turning into him (no split screen trickery needed).

The special edition version has some deleted scenes that really expand on everything, just how much of a learning curve the terminator has to go through, how badly effected by the nitrogen the t1000 was and just how bat-shit Sarah had become since the trauma she suffered in the first movie.
well worth a watch but not something i'd recommend for a first time viewing so im glad you guys watched this version first.

I only watched the special edition for the first time last year and it blew my mind. I couldn't believe they'd had the actor for Kyle Reese back, showing more of Sarah's visions and delusions, even that moment when they're repairing Arnie at the gas station and she almost smashes the chip, it really built on the idea that she hadn't just accepted "Oh he's a good guy", her world has been turned upside down by a machine that looked exactly like him, what reason would she have to just trust him when she had literally disabled him and could run away. So so so so much more there for a fan of the film, I loved it!

Like others have commented I don't understand the dislike for Edward Furlong. Yes, he is a child actor and yes they can sometimes be annoying. I don't think his acting is cringy it's just he is a kid and specifically a tween with a squeaky voice. It's one of those things you just have to get over to enjoy the rest of the movie.

0:01 HELL YES! T2 is one of my all time favourite films. Can't wait to watch this.
And done - Matthew, I watched this when I was something like 9 or 10, and that nuclear nightmare scene was also what haunted me for years. I'm like you I was blown away by all the practical effects, and I feel like they used CGI just right, not too much. Nothing visually ever came close to it until The Matrix 8 years later, but I still think T2 is probably one of the best stories ever told. Shame they never made any more Terminator movies... None at all, 2 and done, it was perfect, YUP! Agree there!
Emily, I watched this as a kid, so I guess I never found John annoying, and I've never seen it that way, but interesting to see how someone seeing it as an adult considered it. Also keep the dad jokes coming, that's definitely your brand, I don't care how far Matthew rolls his eyes back in his head, they're awesome :D

Speaking of Harlen Elison, and 'I have no mouth and must scream specifically, he sued Cameron over the first movie claiming that the two were to close to be coincidence. The courts agreed with Elison and that's why he's listed in the credits for the original.
