Boiling Coolant at Overflow Reservoir (2004 Toyota Sienna) - 179k miles

  • update....184,600 miles.....fan module is still running great. We did have an issue with the fan. Oddly enough the new part was defective and one fan blade came unscrewed. This happened after only about 2,000 miles. Check out this video ( • Online Parts For Car ... ).
    All kinds of videos are out there on this topic. Fear set in pretty quickly as I automatically assumed I had a blown head gasket. Fortunately, I was spared and the problem was quite elementary. I did perform tests to eliminate the blown head gasket. I removed those sections from the video as it shortened my video to a reasonable length. Those tests were: Checking for exhaust gases in the coolant = none; and checking for water in the oil = none. I did not do a compression test on the cylinders as I felt confident with my diagnosis and repair.

    Had an overflowing coolant issue. Fan would turn on when the A/C is on, but would not turn on otherwise. Successfully replaced the temperature control module following this video; however, it did not fix the problem. Replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor; that fixed the problem.

    I got a 3.4l Impala. It has good heat not overheating, and not smoking plus the oil looks good. Recently had valve cover head gasket and intake manifold replaced. Coolant still going down a little bit. A few bubbles in radiator and an expansion tank

    Got a Town & Country doing the exact same thing, engine temp fine but reservoir boiling and a/c working intermittent. I checked the fans they were working didn't notice either one spinning slower, so I'll have to check that again. Replaced the radiator cap at least 3 times so far (different issues, defective caps) but I haven't replaced the radiator. Great video

    For me, I have a 2006 Solara with the 3.3, the bubbling in the reservoir only happened when the car was HOT, not hot on the gauge, but when driving it in the 100 degree weather with a lot of load. I would go through half a gallon of coolant when it would throw it's fits. I finally replaced the thermostat and the radiator cap. Solved my problem right away. It was truly a mixture of the 2 as well. The thermostat was completely stuck with a tiny gap for flow, and the cap was leaky allowing air into the system, thus the bubbling. I might edit a video showing what I did 😊😊

    Hey man nice informative video... im having the same symptoms with out 2004 toyota seinna... did you have any engine check lights on? If so do you remember the codes? Mine is showing a bunch...lol... anyways thanks for the video

      No engine check lights for this symptom. However, my 2004 sienna is always giving me oxygen (o2) sensor codes. I just change the affected sensor and like clock work, another o2 sensor-related light will come on 30-40k miles later, but never the same sensor. Maybe there is a deeper problem, but I will just live with spending the 100-200 bucks for o2 sensors whenever needed.

    I just noticed that on my 2007 Toyota Sienna, there is no hose attached to the upper coolant drain plug that is to the left of the reservoir

    I have a 2004 Sienna awd, with 115,000 miles and the gasket under the intake is going bad, its about $1300 to fix a $5 liquid gasket , but I'll do it myself in the summer, van runs fine, but a hit of coolant smell and looses about 1/4 cup every 3-4 months

      Funny thing you ask. I purchased all parts on Amazon. The fan module is still going strong, but the construction of the fan shroud assembly failed miserably as the fan blade fell off and damaged the shroud housing after only 2,000 miles. LOL. ...making another video focused on parts quality when purchasing online.
      So ridiculous! Anyway, I just bought a new fan shroud assembly from 1A Auto. I did my best to order one OE quality.
      If you get a cheap fan module from online, it will set you back around $30-$40 (excl. Shipping). The fan shroud assembly will set you back $110 - $130.

    Go with changing the radiator cap first 12 bucks I spent almost 300 dollars getting the fan kit and module just for it to do the samething change the cap problem seems to be fixed the gasket on the cap was allowing pressure to release causing the boiling water issue

    I have the same issue right now on my 2006 Toyota Sienna. Budget is tight right now so I'm thinking of buying the parts on Amazon. My question is, would you have any idea, how much is the reasonable price for labor to replace (radiator, fan assembly, and the fan module) when i take it to the local car shop? I know I will pay a lot at the dealership :(

      They will probably charge you 2 hours for radiator plus another hour for fans and module. I suspect their total labor will come to 3 hours. This is just a guess. FYI. that same fan module I purchased is still running strong.

      @@projectfixit Thanks for the quick reply. I checked and I dont see leaks. Both fans still works. I dont overheat but i keep adding fluid to the coolant reservoir. It started when then was turning on more than usual. When i added coolant, it went back to normal. But now, there are times when i see coolant on the ground and noticed that there were dried splatter of coolant that came from the reservoir. I will start with the module and replace it. Maybe it's malfunctioning and just like yours, you had to tap it to start.

      If you still have the issue or the car, I had this exact issue. I fixed mine by replacing the thermostat AND radiator cap. Usually bubbles in the reservoir indicate air seeping in somewhere, replacing the cap helped get rid of my bubbling situation, replacing the thermostat helped my overflowing and overheating situation 😊

      @@ToyotaCelicaDude1 i went to buy a new radiator cap. Waited until the engine cools off. When i tried it, it was the wrong size! Will return/exchange it tomorrow. Thanks for the comment.

    My 04 Sienna overheated the gauge shot up way past H and looked like a leak from the water pump. I changed WP, Timing belt and seals. Idles like a Toyota and runs like a Toyota but coolant boiling out of overflow tank. Replaced ECT,thermostat, checked fans and working (disconnected ECT connector), swapped EFI and fan relay both working. Drove 3 miles in 85-degree weather and overheating. Drove this morning 68 degrees the same 3 miles and runs perfect and no issues. Trying to figure out what it is. Radiator cap or radiator?

    My 02 Camry is doing this... I replaced the thermostat twice, a water pump, a radiator, and a new coolant resivour... still bubbling and over heating. The mechanics checked and said the head is fine

      Well that is a relief to know your heads are fine. Did they give you any direction on what your issue might be? Your fans, if electric, should be ON when your A/C is running. Are your fans kicking ON? This is a crazy symptom for sure. Fortunately my issue was with the fans and module.

      @@projectfixit I want to see if it is my O2 sensor.... I am having a hard time trusting mechanics at this point. I'm glad y'alls was a simple fix. I'm also 30,000 away from 300,000 on the od. 😅

      @@Erin-lx2er If you haven't already, replace the radiator cap. It might have a bad seal and not hold pressure well enough.

      Yep. My gauge was not showing an overheat either. I am glad I changed the fans. I gave the old ones to a friend who was going to use them on his boat and he said one of the fans was definitely bad. For me the module + the fans fixed the problem.

    I'm having same problem with my 2006 Toyota sienna LE. Except my coolant isn't boiling but it looks a brownish color but the reservoir is brown n when I put paper towels in to soak some up it comes out almost clear wkth a little greenish tint to it. My fans keep kicking on and kicking off. Same with AC it shuts off when I come to a stop then after driving 5 or 10 miles it will kick back on n blow ice cold air again. But since I noticed the coolant looking that color and fan shutting on n off its been trying to over heat. Also the fluid was at jus under max fill line, and today when it first start trying to overheat n I noticed everything the coolant is almost all the way to top. N when I take radiator cap off it's dry there, I don't know if it's supposed to be viewable from the radiator cap or not. I know I need to change my fan module for sure because of your video. Thank you. 😊 but do you know why the coolant is way up to the cap in the reservoir?

      Also want to note my oil looks good on dipstick and under cap. And like I said when I dipped paper towel in the coolant reservoir to see If it had oil in it (because it appeared to look orangeish brownish) it came out clear with a green tint. So I don't think it's blown head gasket. Why would the fan module failing cause the coolant to go to top of cap or is it something different? Sorry if I'm sounding confusing. I'm not mechanic but I have been having to watch RUclips videos n fix things myself because been to broke to take to shop lol

      That's a lot of information. Pressure is building up and pushing the coolant into the overflow. The brownish color of your coolant seems a bit concerning. I am not sure if it is due to different types of coolant being used and maybe not mixing well or maybe oil in the coolant? Check your engine oil dipstick to make sure your oil level is good and the color of oil. If your engine oil is milky and whitish, coolant is mixing with oil and you will need to see a service shop as soon as possible. If oil color and level is good, you definitely have a leak in your system somewhere as you should see coolant when you remove the radiator cap (only when engine is cooled off). The leaks in my vehicle were typically seen in the radiator itself as well as the lower hose. At minimum, I would flush the system and replace coolant with all new specified for Asian vehicles. Any coolant streaks down your radiator show evidence of a cracked radiator. I had to replace two radiators die to leaking in the lifetime of my vehicle while I owned it.

      @@projectfixit thank you. I put coolant in cap til it filled. And it's been running good so far. I think the mavis tires n brakes place drained it cuz tbey had to install my inner tie rods for free cuz they tried to charge me 1700 n I called corporate n they made em do it for free.

    hey man it is a very good video .... I have a problem with my 2008 Sienna it is hard to bleed the coolant system it shows bubbles in spill free funnel , what is the best way to get ride of the air from the system

      For me, I park my van on an incline with radiator facing downhill. Block the wheels and fill that way. From there, I just check fluid level periodically and add as needed. I am not sure of any other way, but seems to work well for me.

    Hi there, I have a 2000 Sienna and it's the same problem except I don't think the 2000 Sienna year has fan module. I replaced all coolant sensors, including coolant fan switches, checked the fan relays. Still same issues, coolant keeps rising until it overflows and spills out! Fans don't run on idle, however they work fine when AC is turned on, once AC is on, and fans work, coolant level begins to cool down and gradually drops in level.. Van does not overheat, I assume if enough coolant is lost it will overheat, during traffic or on highway.. Any suggestions or feedback will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

      Maybe it is something to do with the radiator cap or coolant cap. Have you replaced that?

      @@projectfixit I haven't replace the cap, it's the original one. Would that affect the fan operation though?

      @@VENUEATHENS It wouldn't affect the fan operation, but if it is not holding a seal / pressure, it might just push the coolant into the overflow reservoir creating this symptom, possibly?
      > I suppose you could drive it up and down the freeway for a period of time and compare this type of travel to in-town travel. This would answer if fans are truly the issue, I suppose.
      > Do you think you might just have a fan issue if you find you truly do have a fan problem?
      > Finally, does your coolant only boil when the car is still running or does it continue to boil with the car shut off like mine?

    I got 2003 Camry, 2AZ-FE, 2.4L, with reservoir overflow after high way trip and get off at exit stop. BTW, I don't trust any mechanic without bandages on their hands. Lol.

      Yes. The fan module is still working. It is possible my fans had brought the other module to its demise. I will update the comments with current hours. I'll check the van tonight.
