My strawberries are already blooming and forming. I’m so excited last year I planted six strawberry plants and they’ve started growing babies and flowering. I’m gonna have lots of strawberries this year. I’m so excited.
Thanks Kim! I did exactly as you recommended. My ever bearing strawberries produced a lot of runners which I was able to save and this year, I gained nine new plants. Hope they produce a decent amount of berries to enjoy this summer. Thanks!
I just moved my three year old bed into the purple Smart Pots. They say plants don’t do well after 3 years and mine are doing great and producing. I learned how to grow berries with you CaliKim! Thank you!
That is awesome, Patty! Smart Pots have woven virgin wool fabric allowing both air and water into/out of the smart pots....I am so glad to hear that they are doing well AND producing after the transfer!! Your comment made me smile! I am honored to be a part of your garden. CaliKim
I have some bare root strawberries coming!! I got the stackers, that roll around!! I cannot wait. First time trying to grow them, at 60!! Scared of all the crap sprayed on commercial berries. Thank you for great tips!!"
I planted my 1st strawberry plant in a 20 gallon pot 2 weeks ago. I’m seeing runners but no strawberries. Your grow tips were helpful, looking forward to eating my berries ❤. Thanks for your tips.
Glad it was helpful, Carolann! If you want your plants to produce strawberries this year, cut off the runners so all the energy goes into those delicious berries! After the berries are done producing for the season, allow the runners to grow and root them for free plants. Enjoy!
Those are really strong healthy strawberry plants! I'm going to try planting them in a GreenStalk, if I can manage to get it set up. How great it would be to eat berries I grow!
I just bought some strawberries today so you will be helping me with that too. I'm so excited. This video has excellent information and more ideas for me to get my strawberries started. What I have done for now I have transplanted my strawberries from a 2 gallon pot that I bought it in to a 5-gallon bucket. I plan to increase this strawberry plant but I must do some more learning. So I will have this video on repeat God Willing.
Wonderful! Glad to hear that this video was helpful to you!! Yes, you are on the right path, continue nice and easy, as you go! GREAT work out there!! Thank you for subscribing! CaliKim
My strawberry plants all pooped out this summer. My bareroot strawberries did not grow. I did get 2 strawberries out of the Baker Creek plantstarts but they too had issues with our Texas summer this year. I will continue to feed and water the roots in case they decide to regrow this fall. I've never been very successful at growing strawberries but the 2 that did ripen only encourage me to keep trying.
I am also in Texas. The first year you plant them you need to take off the blooms to help them establish their root systems. A little root stimulator a month after planting also helps. You will have strawberries every year after... it is so difficult to do that I know!!! However your patience will be rewarded!!
I used fish fertilizer this year in my garden in the spring . The garden was attached by raccoons. I had potatoes in buckets they dug them up and in other random spots.
Hi Kim! Do you use the same plant cocktail on your berries as you do with your tomatoes? I love that good dirt plant food and am wondering if I can just use the same mix across the board with all plants. I don’t see why not but wanted to ask what you do in your garden ☺️
This is my favourite channel. I especially like it when you explain everything so nicely. I wish you a lot of success with the channel and happy life...........
I’m growing in green stock towers. Thanks for the info. I d Isn’t know about feeding them that oftEn!! JusT ordered the worm casting concentrate. Thanks!
I’m a newbie so need all the advice I can get. I dug up established plants from garden of a friend that passed. I have stripped down all sister and any dead leaves, trimmed the roots and have them ready to plant. BUTTTT… My issue is if I should bring them indoors…. after washing and cleaning like a crazy person. Don’t want any “friends” coming into the house” 😂. Since they weren’t originally from my plants, I don’t know if they are everbearing or Junes. I’m in zone 6a, so I guess it’s important to ask if they’ll even produce inside lol. Or other choice is to get them in the ground. Let her grow until I need to get them ready for winter. I’m all ears if anyone has suggestions and/or experience! 😊😊 PS… don’t forget I’m a newbie and am clueless about what to do, or even normally do 😂
You’ve done a fantastic job prepping these plants for transplanting! To help them settle in, choose a spot with the right sunlight and soil conditions-similar to where they were previously growing, if possible. When planting, dig a hole slightly wider and as deep as the root ball, adding a bit of compost or transplant fertilizer at the bottom for a nutrient boost. After placing them, water deeply to settle the soil around the roots, and keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) for the first couple of weeks to reduce transplant shock. Adding a layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, but be sure to keep it a few inches away from the stems to prevent rot. It’s normal for plants to look stressed after transplanting, so be patient; they’ll adjust to their new home over time. How do you give food to the lower crates in the crate tower? Do you disconnect the irrigation tubing temporarily, lift the crates off to feed the lower crates, then put them back together?
Hi Allan! For everbearing strawberries, it’s best to give them a light dose of fertilizer after their last harvest to help them store energy for the winter. You can use a balanced organic fertilizer or compost to give them a little boost before they go dormant. Just before the first frost, it’s more important to mulch them well rather than fertilize, so they’re protected during the colder months. Then, in the spring, you can fertilize again to encourage healthy new growth! 😊🍓 Help? Let me know how it goes! CK
Living in MN when it’s really cold in the winter, how do I care for strawberries if I grow them in pots or hanging baskets ? Do I have to take them inside ?
Definitely doable with some care. Choose Cold-Hardy Varieties - you research this. Also, In late fall or early winter, after the plants have gone dormant, you can prune them back to remove any dead or damaged foliage. Provide protection BEFORE the winter sets in. Move them to a more sheltered location, such as against a south-facing wall or near the house, where they can benefit from the warmth radiating from the building. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plants to insulate the roots and protect them from extreme cold. Make sure to water your strawberry plants adequately throughout the fall, but reduce watering as winter approaches. Bringing them indoors for the winter. A garage, shed, or unheated porch can serve as a suitable overwintering location. Make sure the plants still receive some light: a window or supplemental grow lights. Monitor for Pests and Diseases! Please thumbs up the video and subscribe if you have not already. Thank you for watching and commenting. CaliKim
Beautiful hanging baskets. What are those beautiful blue flower plants with the strawberries? I would love to grow them. Thank you for the information 😊
It has been so long that I had to go back look this up! I use DIG Products from Home Depot: 1/4" tubing with built in drip emitters every 6" with a .65 GPH flow rate. Mine are set to go off daily, for 15 mins. (80 degree temps). Adjust your frequency dependent on your weather. Can I say Thank You for subscribing and that I sure hope you are learning tons from the channel! One other thing you can do that would really help my channel is to hit the thumbs up button under each video that you watch, please!? Tell me about your garden, where you are and what you are growing? Again, thank you for following - CaliKim
Hi keohon, at the start of each growing season, refresh your strawberries by mixing in compost or organic fertilizer to give the soil a nutrient boost. No need to dig up and replant. However, If your plants are over 3 years old, it’s time to replace them with new plants or grow new ones from runners. This helps keep your strawberry patch healthy and productive for seasons to come! Keep me posted how your strawberries grow! Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already.
What type of fertilizer would you put in these? I just got some plants from a lady out in Middleburg Florida I know nothing about them so you're my first lesson.
I would try Slow-Release Fertilizer as it provides a steady supply of nutrients over time. It should say that right on the packaging at your local nursery center or box store nursery center.And/or Organic fertilizers they improve soil structure and promote microbial activity. Hope this helps, Stephen. Keep me posted! CaliKim
Not domestic birds, if that's what you mean? Yes, we have birds all over! Sometimes they eat my seeds, but it's not too bad. We have small tub/fountains, sometimes they come in and drink and cool off in there, it's fun to watch - CaliKim
Hi Calikim I love ur garden so much, and I like to grow Strawberry but I can't do it. Can u let me know how to mix soil pls? I'm live in Cambodia its to hot and what the weather Strawberry like? Thank u so much and I'm waiting for ur reply back. Love you. ❤
Hi Kim, really love your videos. You have such great knowledge, it's so helpful. A question about fertilizing strawberries. You say every 7 to 10 days. If it's rained for a few days before the 7 to 10 days do you still do it?
You are lucky, in Australia, we have big bird problem, we can't just grow strawberry just in mid of garden, this bloody birds will eath everything, we can't grow berries, also birds dig all soil around and it's so difficult to sow any seeds. each inch of the garden soil should be covered but it looks bad, like it is'nt garden at all...
I got strawberries in a similar situation one of the barrels the strawberries are light light green and making tiny berries not sure why any ideas??? The barrel next to it the strawberries are doing good any help be much appreciated
It sounds like the strawberries in that particular barrel might be experiencing some stress or nutrient deficiencies. Here are a few things to consider: Soil Quality: The soil in the barrel with the struggling strawberries might be lacking in essential nutrients. Strawberries need well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter. If the soil is too compacted or depleted, the plants might struggle to produce healthy fruit. You could try adding compost or a balanced fertilizer to boost the nutrient content. Watering: Uneven watering can cause issues with fruit development. Make sure the soil in both barrels is consistently moist but not waterlogged. Inconsistent moisture can lead to smaller or underdeveloped berries. Sunlight: Ensure that both barrels are getting the same amount of sunlight. Strawberries need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If one barrel is shaded more than the other, it could affect the plant’s growth and fruit production. Plant Health: Inspect the plants in the struggling barrel for any signs of disease or pests. Sometimes, fungal infections or pests like aphids can cause the plants to produce smaller or misshapen fruit. Barrel Condition: Check if the barrel itself is causing any issues, such as poor drainage or overheating. Containers can heat up more quickly, especially if they’re in direct sunlight, which could stress the plants. By comparing the conditions of both barrels and making any necessary adjustments, you should be able to help your struggling strawberries bounce back. If you’re still having trouble, a soil test might give you more insight into what’s happening. Let me know if this is helpful!! CK
Honestly, Christine, I have not had snake issues. That would definitely be a Google search as well as a visit to www.bonide.com and look at their “Problem Solver” for snake issues! So sorry I can’t help more! Kim
Does anyone know what the red really small crawling bugs are that I just got this year are?? You can see them with your naked eye but they are extremely small. Ive never got them before but i did this year. They are definitely red and I want to say they are some sort of a spider but i don't know. I'm thinking maybe ladybugs would take care of them I think I will buy some from buckerfeilds but figure I'd ask here.
Sounds like what I had on my squash last year although these spun webs, moved fast and looked more like brownish-red dust. If so you might have red spider mites. A heavy dose of neem oil mixed with castile soap spray might work. Try 4 tbsp of each per gallon of water, good luck Jimmy.
Im confused about this fertilizing strawberries. I’ve watched a few videos on strawberries and you are the only one that says to fertilize every 2 weeks and to use high nitrogen. Others say todo it only once in the spring and once in the fall after harvest is complete. Nitrogen will give mostly green growth and few berries because they need higher P & K. 🤷♀️
Hi Michele - sorry for the confusion. To clarify, I feed my container/hanging basket berries every 2 weeks as I mentioned in the video, but when they're flowering and fruiting, I"ll only feed them worm tea. At the beginning of the season and after they are done producing, or after a heavy pruning, they"ll get N along with the worm tea to help them grow more leaves. Hope this helps!
