09:09 - Jeff, we all hate that moment. Not because of the mess we make, but because of all that wasted nectar. Also, I love the fact that you didn't edited it out.
finally someone who brings all that AAA Mini PC nonsens to a point. Thank you for that alone. I never heard of eXoDOS and eXo Windows before. Sounds amazing, i will try them. Thanks a lot👍
3:42 I'm not aware of DisplayPort ever having analog video, so an active adapter would be required. Is it that the adapter can be powered by the DP and not require _additional_ power?
It doesn't have analog video as far as I know, yeah. It does provide a bit of power and active DP > VGA adapters are fine with that so they may not need external power. HDMI carries some power too, I've had HDMI > VGA adapters which didn't need external power too, but it also depends what HDMI device it's plugged into.
I'm not sure that's accurate, as far as I know DP++ only supports HDMI / DVI with passive adapters and those are of course still digital video signals. Old cards which could output VGA had a RAMDAC to do the conversion and get analog video signals, as far as I know there is no such thing or any equivalent on any modern card, let alone on iGPUs. @@kadancomputers
I love the idea, but the execution falls well short - especially with a dummy screen. If they had at least designed it to easily insert an LCD if one so desired, I would reconsider.
Remember the acrylic Apple USB keyboard, the early one, from the bubble Mac era i think? It looks like almost a good companion for this, at least the buttons are more or less right, the printing on them.
Hey Jeff! Based on the styling and size of this unit, I am wondering if this might be a candidate for a little 3.5 inch IPS panel. They are very inexpensive and are generally used to display system statistics. I think it would look really cool on this provided the size is right directly over the area that looks like a built-in screen. If you google "3.5 ips screen" you will see many options. Just a thought.
Totally right Macs are not Personal Computers, they are Lifetime Lease Computers for which do only hold a license until internal hardware fails outside of its EOL date to which Apple may not allow the installation of even serialized genuine apple parts.
Of my last 10 videos, this is performing the worst. I'm a retro gaming enthusiast, but it just doesn't get clicks from my core audience (at least what RUclips thinks my core audience is). Doesn't mean I won't post about things I enjoy :-)
@@CraftComputing I'm not sure if your performance metric is number of views (hits), or minutes viewed (retention), but if it is the latter, I wonder if the viewing melt could be related to the way you portrayed the retro gaming. You only show screen captures of gameplay with a voiceover, rather than showing yourself actually playing and reviewing the performance of the hardware and software. As a result, your usual on screen enthusiasm is not conveyed, and that may have lost folks along the way.
"Beta footage of Star Citizen" was literally a spit take. There is tea all over my desk now. 😂 I, for one, love this content and think combining a review with eXoDOS was a bold and exciting move. I essentially already have this PC in the form of a 1L HP EliteDesk MicroPC but you opened up the possibility of using it for eXoDOS and I hadn't considered that use case yet. Cheers!
Alot of Win98 or newer games have little issue running on modern OSes with some tweaking but there are acceptions, Yeah 95 and older games can be very wonkey if they run at all. One way to get DOS and 3.1 games to generally run perfectly; PCem (Works exceptionally well for DOS games)
Given the Mac vibe, it might have been nice (though entirely less relevant) to explore retro Mac gaming with something like SheepShaver, but glad you went the route you did.
I would love a project that uses an FPGA like the DE-10, or whatever drives MiSTer, and open source boards with either video out or audio out, and different card connectors (ISA, PCI, etc.) so that we can do hardware emulation of rare audio and video cards for authentic experiences without owning $20,000 in retro hardware, but just a few cases with one or two FPGA's bouncing between them.
Being that AMD just launched the new Ryzen 8000 series APU's it would be cool if you could just buy the little case and build your own PC in it. The new 8000 series APU's graphics are more powerful than anything that has come out previous and are comparable to some lower end dedicated graphics cards. You could actually play modern AAA titles on one at lower settings with full framrate. Finally making something like this useful.
@@CraftComputing It's the Desktop APU's I'm referring to. The 8700G looks like a monster. New AI engine. 12 GPU Cores. 8 core 16 threads 4.2GHZ with 5.1GHZ boost clocks AND overclockable. I guess they come out at the end of this month. I've always been impressed with AMD's apu products. Both mobile and desktop ever since I bought a cheap $500 laptop back in 2013 with an A10 apu that actually was capable of allowing me to play Skyrim with better than 30fps. I was so dirt poor at the time and it was like a dream come true in that moment. I am a self admitted AMD fanboy though. Been using AMD almost exclusively since the first PC I ever built. And that was a 386/40 back in the 90's.
The mini PCs with 7840U (35W) or better, 7840HS (65-70W) use the same iGPU as the 8700G. At least, currently, it might be cheaper to get a pre-built mini PC with a 7840U/HS if the iGPU is what you're after specifically. But otherwise, yeah if you want to build your own, the 8700G is the way to go now, the desktop variant 7000 series processors don't have the newer/more powerful 780M iGPU.
Imagine an Innerspace windows defender clone that could be playable to destroy bloat and malware on your PC. Now imagine an entire 3D space combat simulator that could assault systems through brute force attacks to retake corrupted locked out systems....... using scripts as special attacks visualized through the program. IT Security would boom overnight.
I appreciate you covering this topic, HOWEVER I am just curious if you got Exo's permission to give him so much publicity? I've followed him for a long time since PleasureDome days (before Discord), and the community has always had conflicting opinions on publicizing his sort of "work". I'm sure it doesn't matter and that he appreciates it, but I'm just saying you might want to consider giving such people a heads up because it can put them in the crosshairs inadvertently.
My opinion... I'm not the first to cover eXoDOS, or even the largest channel to feature it. He has a website set up with direct links to download, and is full searchable. Plus, I don't think there's anything wrong with redistributing software, where the youngest titles are 28 years old.
Why do all you reviewers stand this up the wrong way?........Am i to assume you are going to stand all the mini pcs up on the ports?.......pretty tough to plug anything into them.

Over a terabyte of DOS games. That's utterly insane.
Great review! I let out a huge "ohhhh" when the glass got knocked over. We've all been there.
Can you do a review for TCL NXTWEAR S+ the new one? I'm a bit skeptical about buying it or the xreal air.

The adapter doesn't need any extra power, I've used one and it's just a dp cable that terminates in a small box with a VGA connector on it
Yep, I used DP->VGA adapters on quite a few systems in my server rack, as my KVM is VGA only. Works great.

Yeah I had the same question!
i'm thinking 4.2" basically a PSP screen?
The problem is, in that orientation all the ports are at the top, cluttering the look.
I'm actually disappointed it doesn't have a functional screen.

I'm loving AyaNeo's retro line. I grabbed an AM01 and a Slide handheld. They know how to sucker this 40-something tech nerd into buying fun tech 🤣
How would retrogaming do on this channel? Well, I saw eXoDOS in the thumbnail and skipped ten other videos to watch this IMMEDIATELY.

I did consider showing off sheepshaver as well, but liked the idea of eXoDOS as a one-stop download. Less talking, more gaming 😁

Check out the MARS project. It won't get ISA slots, but is looking like a promising upgrade over the miSTer.
Is the 3200U not dual core with SMT and not quad core with SMT?
Oh damn, pour one out for all that lost beer...
too soon?
that poor beer...
Welp now i know what im doing with my barebones am01 when it comes. Couldn't pass on it's price.
