  • Barway (Barway Sidings) Level Crossing, Barway, Cambridgeshire
    Date filmed: 23/06/2020
    Route: Ipswich - Ely Line
    - A few minutes south east of Ely Dock Junction
    Location: Barway Road, Barway
    Trains: Class 755 (Greater Anglia)
Located on the branch line connecting Ely with Bury St. Edmunds and Suffolk, a few miles outside of Ely itself, and between Ely and Soham. There are four rather old-looking halogen lights here, along with twin-arm half barriers, and two alarms, one of which is significantly louder than the other. Whilst it may seem like nothing has changed here in many years, one of the barrier and wigwag units (the one I was stood next to in this video) is being re-used here, as it came from Hinxton Level Crossing following that level crossing's conversion to an obstacle detection level crossing in late 2017, and this barrier unit is even still labelled 'Hinxton'. This has been installed here because a vehicle crashed into the former barrier unit here in early 2019, damaging that barrier unit beyond repair, and so one of the old barrier units from Hinxton Level Crossing has replaced it. Each right-hand side wigwag is attached to a very strange, rusty-looking, and tall pole, and there are anti-trespass signs written in multiple languages here despite its remote location. Despite the very flat and rural surroundings, and the rather deceptive impression given that this is a quiet and remote country lane, this level crossing is used by a lot of heavy goods vehicles and industrial traffic on a regular basis, and there are some rather uneven verges around the level crossing itself.
    Thanks for watching!
