- Barway (Barway Sidings) Level Crossing, Barway, Cambridgeshire
Date filmed: 23/06/2020
Route: Ipswich - Ely Line
- A few minutes south east of Ely Dock Junction
Location: Barway Road, Barway
Trains: Class 755 (Greater Anglia)
Located on the branch line connecting Ely with Bury St. Edmunds and Suffolk, a few miles outside of Ely itself, and between Ely and Soham. There are four rather old-looking halogen lights here, along with twin-arm half barriers, and two alarms, one of which is significantly louder than the other. Whilst it may seem like nothing has changed here in many years, one of the barrier and wigwag units (the one I was stood next to in this video) is being re-used here, as it came from Hinxton Level Crossing following that level crossing's conversion to an obstacle detection level crossing in late 2017, and this barrier unit is even still labelled 'Hinxton'. This has been installed here because a vehicle crashed into the former barrier unit here in early 2019, damaging that barrier unit beyond repair, and so one of the old barrier units from Hinxton Level Crossing has replaced it. Each right-hand side wigwag is attached to a very strange, rusty-looking, and tall pole, and there are anti-trespass signs written in multiple languages here despite its remote location. Despite the very flat and rural surroundings, and the rather deceptive impression given that this is a quiet and remote country lane, this level crossing is used by a lot of heavy goods vehicles and industrial traffic on a regular basis, and there are some rather uneven verges around the level crossing itself.
Thanks for watching!
I live in the village near this crossing and that Hixton Barrier now looks very beat up.
Interesting... the only reason the Hinxton unit got put there was because the previous unit got struck and damaged beyond repair.
@@SouthEastLevelCrossings Yes. I remember that hit on the crossing.
Great video and crossing!
Thanks!
Nice one! I think this has been upgraded to LEDs as when I went on Saturday there were 2 signs up, one saying "Road closed here" and the other saying "Works starts here"
The timings were the same amount of time to upgrade a crossing to LED, lucky I came the day before it happened.
Thank you very much!
Shame to hear about that if the halogens are going tbh, but I'm surprised nothing was done sooner due to the frequent HGV traffic here
LEDs are still there
Great video
Thanks! 👍👍
Hello I am back 😎
Great videos
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 👌
Nice! 👍🏻 Didn't the alarm turned off whilst the train passed by?
Thank you! The alarms didn't turn off as the train passed by, it's just that the one I stood next to was really quiet and the passing train blocked the sound of the loud one from being heard.
Nice video! 👍
Thanks! 👍
