The True Scale of Blackreach: Skyrim in UNREAL ENGINE 5!

  • I made Blackreach in Unreal Engine 5 - at a more realistic and lore-accurate scale! Part of an ongoing project to visualise a more realistic and lore accurate scale to Tamriel’s cities - so here’s Blackreach - now with sixteen times the detail!
    Blackreach was always super interesting, both visually and lore-wise. A massive Dwemer cave system that was said to stretch underneath most of Skyrim itself. Elder Scrolls Online expanded on it a bit with the vampire stuff, but I thought I’d scale up the original cavern we got to explore in Skyrim. Ironically enough, this is probably the only city so far that I've done that actually should look like no-one lives there...
    Again, when operating at these scales, it’s not really the point to do a one-to-one recreation. Instead, it becomes more of a spiritual upgrade - to get the feeling and vibe of Blackreach, and give an impression for what a more realistic size would be...
    This was technically quite difficult to light, given that it was pretty much only lit by bioluminescent fungi, aetherium veins and the glow-worms, so Lumen certainly got a workout with this one…
    *
    If you enjoy my content and want to help support the channel, you can buy me a coffee! ko-fi.com/lion...
    *
    I actually did start this several months ago, but the sheer scale and density made my 3060ti cry, so I kind of kept it in the back-burner for a while until I upgraded my gpu. If you were wondering what it takes to max out the 24GB vram of a 3090 at 1440p - well, this’ll do it (although do keep in mind that running on editor has a higher performance overhead that a stand-alone game).
    Rendered out in Unreal Engine 5.3.2 on an RTX 3090. Using a mix of third party models and custom assets modelled in Blender. Nanite was used for all models and foliage; Hardware Lumen for global illumination and reflections.
    Please NOTE: This is a fanmade cinematic lore visualisation for Skyrim. It is NOT a mod!

    Make sure to watch in 1440p if you can! RUclips compression for dark scenes like these is pretty gnarly at 1080p and below!

    This is actually lore accurate. Elder Scrolls Online expanded on Blackreach significantly, having it span under the entirety of Skyrim and with many more entrances, including entrances from caves and Nordic tombs. Blackreach in ESO is also essentially its own unique ecosystem with unique plants and animals that can only be found there and nowhere else.

      I had a mod that included a bunch of extra map markers, including for Skyrim. Even in vanilla, it's a good third of the way both vertical and horizontal across skyrim. Since it's considered outdoors, I don't think it's an engine limitation that restricted it.

    • @glowerworm
      @glowerworm 8 месяцев назад +20

      I love ESO in a lot of ways but I also can't get over the absolutely absurd requirement that you purchase the monthly subscription. It just feels so scummy to me.
      The first 30 hours of gameplay you have to play Tetris with your inventory for 30 minutes after every single dungeon, and the next 30 hours of gameplay you have to do it all over again with the outfit system because they couldn't just let fashion be the endgame without forcing that to be a subscription, too.
      Like ESO is *so close* to being the best Elder Scrolls game by a significant margin and all they'd have to do is remove ESO+ as a concept.
      Like why can a live service MMO not exist without being trapped by arbitrary limitations constructed by corporate greed? The only MMOs I know of that don't have this problem are Warframe, which has garbage combat and is eternally stuck only adding horizontal progression, and Division 2 which is unfortunately a Ubisoft game so for ethical reason must be boycotted.

    • @darrennew8211
      @darrennew8211 8 месяцев назад +9

      @@glowerworm Why can't a live service MMO can't exist without being trapped in making a profit? Really? Maybe it's not "greed" but actual "need to raise enough money to keep up the development"?

    • @glowerworm
      @glowerworm 8 месяцев назад

      @@darrennew8211 it's wholly possible to make money off an MMO without creating 17 problems and selling the solution as a subscription service.
      Warframe and Division 2 both avoid exactly that problem (although they again aren't ideal for separate reasons).
      Hell, even Minecraft servers are capable of avoiding this.
      If you believe that the only way ESO can continue to have these large expansions every year is by locking the crafting bag and outfits behind ESO+, you've been tricked. I know you've been tricked because I myself was tricked by the same greedy tactics when I still played Destiny.
      Ask anyone who was once addicted to WoW and they'd tell you the same thing.

    • @johnmccall4528
      @johnmccall4528 8 месяцев назад +5

      @@glowerworm I feel you. I played ESO for a few years but eventually quit for different reasons. Watching this reminds me of a passage from LOTR. How Gimli spoke to Legolas of the Glittering Caves:
    ‘‘Strange are the ways of Men, Legolas! Here they have one of the marvels of the Northern World, and what do they say of it? Caves, they say! Caves! Holes to fly to in time of war, to store fodder in! My good Legolas, do you know that the caverns of Helm’s Deep are vast and beautiful? There would be an endless pilgrimage of Dwarves, merely to gaze at them, if such things were known to be. Aye indeed, they would pay pure gold for a brief glance!’
    ‘And I would give gold to be excused,’ said Legolas; ‘and double to be let out, if I strayed in!’
    ‘You have not seen, so I forgive your jest,’ said Gimli. ‘But you speak like a fool. Do you think those halls are fair, where your King dwells under the hill in Mirkwood, and Dwarves helped in their making long ago? They are but hovels compared with the caverns I have seen here: immeasurable halls, filled with an everlasting music of water that tinkles into pools, as fair as Kheled-zâram in the starlight. ‘And, Legolas, when the torches are kindled and men walk on the sandy floors under the echoing domes, ah! then, Legolas, gems and crystals and veins of precious ore glint in the polished walls; and the light glows through folded marbles, shell-like, translucent as the living hands of Queen Galadriel. There are columns of white and saffron and dawn-rose, Legolas, fluted and twisted into dreamlike forms; they spring up from many-coloured floors to meet the glistening pendants of the roof: wings, ropes, curtains fine as frozen clouds; spears, banners, pinnacles of suspended palaces! Still lakes mirror them: a glimmering world looks up from dark pools covered with clear glass; cities, such as the mind of Durin could scarce have imagined in his sleep, stretch on through avenues and pillared courts, on into the dark recesses where no light can come. "
    "And plink! a silver drop falls, and the round wrinkles in the glass make all the towers bend and waver like weeds and corals in a grotto of the sea. Then evening comes: they fade and twinkle out; the torches pass on into another chamber and another dream. There is chamber after chamber, Legolas; hall opening out of hall, dome after dome, stair beyond stair; and still the winding paths lead on into the mountains’ heart. Caves! The Caverns of Helm’s Deep! Happy was the chance that drove me there! It makes me weep to leave them.’

      It does indeed remind of the description of the Glittering caves, but so it does also remind of of the mines of Moria, not Khazad-Dum in it's splender but after it's fall at the hands of the Balrog. The ancient halls and ruins mixed with aging fauna and decay.

Consistently building TES to last generation consoles has been holding the series back since Oblivion. OK, now I'm wondering how you're releasing these videos so quickly. Haha! Even straight kit bashing seems like it would take longer to create a scene like this than the time since your last video. We certainly appreciate the content, I just hope you're sleeping every now and then!

    why are doing this to me??? I've always loved skyrim like it was a place I was really into it, like I was born in it and I've seen the videos and my heart ache as I was missing something... like my soul, so I just wanna say thank you. I needed it.

    I have a love hate relationship with Blackreach. It's one of the most magical places, both in the way it looks and ambiance and also the whole mystery and journey surrounding it (the quests and stuff). It's somewhere I'd love to walk around every nook and cranny because there's always something new. However, you can easily get lost which isn't a huge deal but an annoyance and then there's the crimson plants, oh boy lol

    I don't know what it is about Skyrim that keeps me coming back to it. I know it's not particularly well written as far as RPG's are concerned, I know the graphics are pretty dated, and there are other fantasy games that are bigger and more immersive. But there is something about Skyrim that just lights my imagination of fire. I've already spent 2000-3000 hours of my life playing this fucking thing but I still find myself, every now and then, wanting to make a new character and do it all again. I think there is a little part of me that genuinely wishes I lived in this world, even yearns for it.

    I really wish it was possible for someone to mod something like this into skyrim, but id love it even more if skyrim was fully remade from the ground up with a new engine while taking into account many loved mods like skyui to enhance many of its outdated aspects.
    Looking at this was like a mix of lotr and avatar and it truly hits that fantasy feel
