Why You Pee At Night - The Most Overlooked Reason

  • In this video, I argue that sleep-breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome should be the first reason to think about when you suffer from this nighttime urination. Nocturia (nighttime urination) is a widespread condition as you get older, but it’s also common in children as well as younger adults. There are many explanations for nocturia by experts, but obstructive sleep apnea is rarely mentioned. I also explain which hormone from the heart is made due to apneas to make you pee more at night, as well as frightening statistics on much higher death rates for people with nocturia.

    Here's a study showing that in patients with sleep apnea and nighttime urination, 79% of awakenings at night were due to obstructed breathing, rather than from a distended bladder. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/621682.

      I have sleep apnea and also have nighttime urination. Is it possible that my bladder is more susceptible to being irritated by what I eat and drink?
      I'm asking, if my bladder can be irritated by foods and drink because of sleep apnea?

    • @222Lightning
      @222Lightning Год назад

      @@Curtis_George I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I came to understand from a Dr. Berg video that "what and when" you eat can affect your insulin at night and an insulin problem can cause or make Sleep Apnea worse. Eating too much salty foods or alcohol irritates the bladder. I like beer a lot....I definitely notice that if I drink 2-3 beers even if its in the first half of the day...my Nocturia is worse that night. I'd recommend trying to make your dinner a spinach salad w Garbanzo beans (my new favorite) or pan fried broccoli w olive oil. You will definitely feel that your bladder feels good and not get up at night as much. I'm not telling you to go vegan... I personally can't do this.....just go vegan for dinner. Try it.....see if it it makes a difference. Also try not to eat or drink 2-3 hours before bed...and not snack in the middle of the night. Eat enough also.........regardless if you skip breakfast or not. I usually skip breakfast myself. If you have obstructive sleep apnea....your solution is getting diagnosed then get one of those machines I would think. Drink lemon water also. This definitely good for the bladder.

    I was diagnosed with BPH at an early age. Despite that, I continued drinking large amounts of caffeine throughout the day. This, in turn, caused frequent urination during the night. Most nights, I would have to get up five times to urinate. I made a switch to drinking one cup of coffee in the morning, followed by one cup of matcha tea. After that, I only drink water. In addition, I keep a bottle of water on my nightstand. Since making the change, I rarely get up to urinate at night. If I do, it is only once and I fall right back to sleep. It has been life-changing.

    Thank you Dr Park. I'm a retired but active, 75 year old New Zealander and have been having nocturia for about 10 years. I have had high blood pressure for about 18 years, but I have been listed as marginal all my adult life. Bedtime is usually 10.30-11pm and I wake for a full pee around 12.30pm. I then wake 90 minutes later at 2.00am for an extra dribble. The next one is usually at 4am and a final one at 6.00am, both of these are annoying dribbles that keep you half-awake if you don't see to it. I have slept right through on occasions when I have had a hard day's exercise and/or a super comfortable bed at a hotel/motel. But sleep apnea seems a high probability. Thank you.

THE first night I noticed that I only got up once or twice a night to pee. No one at the clinic mentioned that this may happen. I had been getting up 4-6 times a night. @@doctorstevenpark Thanks. I had a leaky heart valve, which I reckon was caused by Sleep Apnea in the first place, so it all goes round in circles, I suppose. My father too suffered from Sleep Apnea and had to sleep with a mask next to a machine of some kind. Unfortunately it only worsened his condition in the long run. I avoided that thanks to emplolying the Butayko Method for breathing etc., particularly the principle of taping one's mouth over with surgical tape at night. If you are not aware of this solution to Sleep Apnea, I will strongly encourage you to look into it. Some medical professionals have their doubts about it (though Butayko, who invented it, was in fact a high-ranking doctor himself), and one night when I was at hospital there was a nurse who woke me up and told me to remove the tape. Luckily for me, she had a young doctor with her, who said, "No, no, no, this is a great thing to do." He had some personal, very positive experience with the method and even tossed me a roll of surgical tape when he left (the nurse had to accept his decition, of course). I still mouthtape at night, but I do have a small worry in regard to the glue on the tape and whether it might be somewhat toxid, as you place it across the lips. I know there are dedicated tapes made for this specific purpose, but I can't find the brands around where I live (South West Ireland), and the sellers I found on German Amazon, who stock them, won't post out of their own country, and buying from amazon.co.uk. isn't worth the trouble since Brexit. To cut a long story short, I wonder if you might have a comment on the subject of the possible toxidity of the tape.

    I am çoeliac and as my health deteriorated I woke more during the night. This condition is a killer and yet it was not mentioned in your ten minute informative talk. Many of the problems it causes are in the list you gave us. Please add coeliac disease to your list and encourage people to get tested before serious damage is done. I was sixty two and unable to digest anything properly before I found a diagnostic program that gave me possible things to test for, yet for years I had been visiting my GP with gastric problems and worsening symtoms, high blood pressure heart palpitations alongside weakness and tiredness. The tendency is to treat one symptom instead of looking for an underlying cause. I was told for years that I had irritable bowel syndrome. This is not a diagnosis but a description of what was happening to me from an irritant that ruined my life.

I am going to go out as I want to enjoying what I want to and if she don't like it tough luck.

I think it’s a lot of other stuff iron overload, high acid levels, many other things that can be correlated with age but not necessarily and larger and larger numbers of the young are afflicted with issues so I mostly don’t feel like it’s age it’s environmental poisons and other things or that’s my best bet right now. It’s a mix of reduced good increased bad in lifestyle and environment and invisible toxins that people mostly don’t notice.

    Reluctantly, I have started using a CPAP machine. I now have 9 consecutive nights of fairly successful use according to how I feel in the mornings, and from the feedback on my phone app which is connected to my machine. Prior to using the CPAP machine, I would get up 2 to 4 a night to urinate over the past 7 years. I now get up 0 to 1 time a night to urinate since using the machine. I have been on prostate medication for about one year now and have seen no real positive results from the taking of this medication. I am amazed, that the CPAP machine has had this positive affect on my nocturia. I'm very excited to see what other positive results will come from using this machine!!!!! What abuse my body has taken from Central Sleep Apnea!!! I should have started using this machine years ago!!!

    I have been watching videos about nocturia. No one mentions antidiurectic hormone. This hormone is supposed to reduce urine output when you sleep. I am 75 years old and am still working. The reason I have to get up two or three times a night to go to the bathroom is that I work sitting down in front of a computer for long periods of time. I have a little swelling problem. So I am glad to remove some water when I am lying down. It does not bother me at all. Sometimes I fell asleep right after dinner. I get enough sleep. I do not believe nocturia will shorten my life.

I realized that during 3 years of pandemic, the face mask may have caused a change in our breathing patterns. I started the 3:00 am waking up pattern at the end of the pandemic, and my wife observed me at night with sleep apnea. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure last year. As a deaf person who reads lips , the face mask has caused more stress in my life and it made me more disabled. So the factors of high blood pressure, emotional stress, borderline overweight,

      One other common reason for swollen legs is heart failure. When this happens, the heart gets stretched due to too much blood volume and for the same reason as what happens in apneas, the hormone atrial natriuretic hormone (ANP) is released from the heart and goes to the kidneys to make more urine.

    A few years ago I started going to the toilet a lot, it started to get up to 5-6 times a night, this was during the covid times, so going to a doctor was a bit out of the question. So I did a lot of reading on what the causes could be. I did read that one of the causes could be artificial sweeteners, which I had started taking a year or 2 before, to help with weight loss. So I stopped useing artificial sweeteners, and went back to sugar, now I maybe go once a night, some nights I can sleep for 8 full hours.

      But remeber artificial sweeters are added to food and drinks, so it's not just a case of what you use. Take diet drinks they contain artificial sweeters, some foods do as well just to cut the calorie count, which is why I now check the ingredients of processed food.

      I haven't had ANY artificial sweeteners in at least 7 years...and I still get up 4-6 times a night :-( Plus, many doctors say sugar is the actual cause of frequent nighttime urination. Having said that, if what you're doing works for you that's all that matters.

    • @maximushaughton2404
      @maximushaughton2404 10 месяцев назад

      @@Person-mh6xq I was not trying to say that it was the answer, it was just the answer for me.
      For me I started to notice the problem during the lockdowns in the UK, so had no chance of seeing a doctor, so I did a lot of reading on the matter. And yes there are a lot of things that can cause the problem. So thought about what had I changed in my lifestyle, that couuld cause it, caffiene is one, I had reduced my caffeine intake any way. But I had started to use artificial sweeteners, which is one of the many causes, I had started to use them to help with weight loss. So I stopped using them and also looked at foods that contain artificial sweeteners, and yes it worked for me.
      I posted the 1st time just to say that there are other reasons, one's that may not cost as much, as going for a medical treatment would cost. To me it sounded like an advert.

    Check this out... The main reason is most of us 40 or older guys take night time pills and if you're like me and don't like to feel my pills coming up i drink a full glass of water and yes it wakes me up a couple hours later. I hate when doctors think they know everything and then think You Tube is so creditable that they make videos. I'm just a lowly Engineer with a masters in Mechanical and Robotic Engineering from Stanford, and have to double check and correct my VA doctors so frequently specially on medication prescribing i should be working there. I think sleep apnea is a bad thing, but i think hooking someone up to a machine that, is a germ cooker and as recently shown could cause cancer or makes you have nightmares because you face is being smothered in a grip or bunging cords and plastic. doesn't make sleep any better, just worse.
