You are correct this pattern does make for a beautiful Baby Blessing or Christening Shawl! Thank you so much for the free and very good, instructional video! I needed to come up with something for a baby gift relatively quickly, I was able to crochet through this pattern and complete the entire thing in a few couple hours sittings, and it only took me two days. (I am able to crochet fairly quickly) But like you say, this is a quick pattern, and it LOOKS so PRETTY and elegant. I hope my daughter-in-law approves of it for my new baby grandson who is to be born here in a few weeks! I am so thankful for you Alison Russell! 🧶🤍🩷
Totally agree with previous comment, this takes me back to the blankets I bought for my babies in the 60’s I absolutely love it and am going to do one ready for my first great grandchild (still a twinkle in their parents eyes) but it will be there ready for them. Hope I’ll be around to see! Thank you 🙏 bye 💁🏼♀️
thanks
What a beautiful baby shawl. Love it. Thank you

Good morning love the video. Just finished the baby blanket now I have started the lace. Looking at the video it's very easy to understand thank you so much 🥰💪
Thank you Alison just been told I will be a Great Grandma in February novice crocheter but with your superb instructions I will definitely master this one
Wonderful!
I will do it again for my first grandchild due in January - I’m really enjoying it
So simple......but absolutely beautiful!! I really love this one. Thank you for another great tutorial. ❤❤❤
Thanks so much 😊
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel you're welcome, lovely. I've been a crocheter all my life, and I know how it feels to receive a complement that isn't followed by 'can you make me one of those?'. I've started saying things like 'if you learned to crochet you could make your own!'. Not always the best response. But your channel would be a great place to start. Oh, by the way.....can you make me one of those??😉😄😄😄❤❤❤
I love this pattern im doing it in pink for my Grandaughter thats due in August x Im doing the edging longer x its absolutely gorgeous xx
Thank you so much for this Beautiful blanket,I’ve just finished making it 💐💐💐👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Oh well done, Coreen xxxx

Such a beautiful shawl and your videos are so easy to follow thank you
Beautifully simple, as a beginner I think that even I can do this sweet and lovely blanket! Thank you for sharing such a great tutorial and a beginner pattern!
You’re welcome 😊
Beautiful edging on this blanket! It’s on my to-do list.
Uber uh
thank you, Grace
I love your channel! I crocheted your "Lace Cross Stitch " into a dedication blanket which is so beautiful. Then I started at one of the corners using the DC (US term) to go around the blanket which creates a gentle wave for the two sides which didn't have the DC starting and ending rows for the blanket. What I would love to see you teach are easy edgings and crocheted lace edgings. My mother taught me to crochet and did a large simple elegant table cloth in the round. She added open areas and delicate lace stitching around the ending of the project. Much like you do in a baby shawl. It's over 75 years old and I want to learn how to crochet in the round and add crochet lace stitches. My brother has the table cloth and has said it was made using nylon yarn. But to me it looks like a mix of cotton and silk. She used a small hook and the yarn was on a large cone. So I need to learn more stitches make more blankets, scarves, prayer shawls and other items in prayerful hope I can sell a them for a little extra cash since I am disabled and can't work. I am so impressed with you teaching skill. Any stiches would be most helpful, Jacob's Ladder, puff stitch, alligator stitch, shell stitch, bunny ears or any other stitches. Thank you for your wonderful channel I have learned so much from you. Cherrie' Moses
How many wool balls I need to knit this shawl
I’ve been looking for a shawl I could do and this is it. I’m 57 I’ve been knitting and crocheting for 54 years and have arthritis I find it helps keep my hands and fingers moving. Thank you for sharing I’m just outside Glasgow and can’t wait for my wool shop to open, it’s great getting it delivered but getting your hands on is the best. Stay safe xx
Me too, Ann Marie, I am 57 and riddled with athritis there aint a joint that dosnt click snap or swell up or rub. In face I think the only joints not affected are my hip joints. My fingers swell but are starting to callous in the joints. I keep on going though. I had to retire early so it can be difficult but I keep on going. Someone always comes to my rescue and sends me yarn to keep on going when my retirment fund is low. I have used up most of my stash due to the virus and have to rebuild it. I think for a while wool and yarn were just as scarce as toilet roll hahahaah
Alison Russell's Crochet and Craft Channel I was made redundant 15 years ago and since then I’ve been a carer for my dad, mum and my husband. My parents are gone now and two years on from losing my mum I still don’t know what to do with my time. My hips and back are my worst, and my hands are the same as yours. When people were worried about running out of food I was worried about running out of wool. I can’t wait till the wool shop at the Barra’s opens again if it does. Stay safe Alison xx
You should feel proud of this one Alison 🏆 it is so lovely, and you explain very well. Can’t wait to have a wee bash at this 🙂. Just watching your video first with a wee cuppa. Watched it last night too. Amazing!. I will crochet along with you when I start. Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern.
Thank you so much, Lynn xxx
Hi how many do u chain to get the 60 in width pmease
I loved your pattern it was very easy to follow and very pretty.
Thanks so much 😊
So beautiful.. thank you for your tutorial.. Narragansett RI, USA..
I love this pattern its lovely
Thank you
Love the easy pattern thank you so much for teaching it so well Mary NZ
You are so welcome!
This is a beautiful shawl or blanket.
If you make it small it's classed as a shawl. If you make it large it is a blanket.
The lace edging would be perfect for my filet baby blanket. many thanks x
I am working on one thats round.
Beautiful very retro but modern too.
thanks
For anyone wanting to make this. In order to have the border come out even. Start with a chain of 69. Then first row skip 4 stitches and treble/double crochet in 5th chain.
If my math is correct you still end up with and even number because the 4 you skip makes 1st and 1 chain space. a lot of people are forgeting this and just skipping 3 so their very 1 stitich has no extra stitch for the last chain space at the end of row 2. they end up with 2 trebles next to each other and no space. I find it hard to explain in writing where they are going wrong,
Use this border pattern on a baby shawl i did, so happy with it, just finished it of nicely
i know Im kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to watch new movies online?
Beautiful just beautiful 🇬🇧👏🏻💯💯👏🏻🇬🇧
thank you

Hi how many do u chain to get the 60 in width pmease
Hi Alison
I hope you don't mind me asking the ladies and gentlemen that visit your channel that if they have any leftover wool left from their projects to think about crocheting or knitting preemie hats and blankets for their local hospital. My granddaughter was born early and weighed only 3lb. The hospital was so desperate for tiny hats and blankets that they had to refuse my daughter when she asked if she could please keep the hat my granddaughter wore when she was firstborn. I've been making them ever since and the nurses and parents are always so grateful. Thankyou xx
Certainly, It is fine to ask this. I also donate to our hospital. Ours is as long s its 100% acrylic so they can be washed in their big machines. I put mine in a see through bag with a label "Hats for baby unit" and I hand it in at reception. Its always best to call and ask as some do get lots of donations.
That's what I am doing now, my good internet friend just had a grandson born early as well the same weight. I decided to make this one for him. I also do prayer shawls for people in need.
SynfullyWkd67 I would love to make some! Do you have a pattern? Not sure how small to make them. Thanks. pam@thefaircloths.com

For people in the UK Aldi will be having a hobbies and crafts special buys event on Sunday 2nd Feb, a good time to stock your wool cupboards
Thanks for the heads up. I was trying to find out when the next one was on.
Hi will it be in Ireland as. Well do. You know 😊
What is the wool like? Is it good quality?
@@tracey6121 very good quality, I especially like the aran. there's some on the website already in the sale section
I also think if you order above £20 delivery to your door is free
Gorgeous blanket and border! Although I must admit to being a wee bit annoyed 😑 Just finished a blanket and putting wave border round it. Wish I’d seen this before putting the border on, since I think it’s a very nice border! Ah well, I’ll just need to do another blanket then! 😂🤣
aww you can make a another one now xx
Am really enjoying making this blanket during lockdown , have learnt alot . Love your Scottish accent and hope to see and hear more of your patterns in the future .
Thanks so much 😊
I tried doing the border on even numbers and it didn't work out so I did 33 block spaces and 41 rows hope this helps for anyone having the same problem
I put that in the comments to help. Thank you so much, Linda giving a number will help I didn't do that as a lot of people made bigger ones than mine.
Thank you I need all the help I can get .
@@pamhenderson8279 your welcome hope it helps
How many stitches would you suggest for the blanket
Multiples of 4 plus 1 on each side and the border matches up.
Many thanks.
You are welcome!
This is absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing. Lovely clear instructions x
Thank you so much, Helen
You need an ODD number of blocks and an ODD number of rows BEFORE you finish the mesh. Once it is the size you like start in 1 corner you will need 5 blocks per pattern sequence and finish in your next corner on a cluster. So count from one corner in sets of 5. From the next corner begin counting in 5's to make sure your mesh will fit the border or you can change the border if you wish.
Thank you, I have made 3 of these blankets and following the even number instructions have never got the right number to do the edging. Now this time it should be right. I love this simple pretty blanket.
Beautiful shawl and very well explained, this will be perfect for my grandchild, thank you. Just subbed. 🌞
Awesome! Thank you!
i love this blanket and have made a few for my friends little ones. i wondered if you could help me with making a round or square neck cardigan. i have taught myself to crotchet watching your videos and others bu its understanding how to calculate the neck for the ages. i am wanting to make a 6yr old bolero for a friend. thank you
I hold my crochet hook like a pencil, and feed yarn round left hand little finger and under ring finger and over middle finger so you have complete control of tension for yarn, the nuns taught me many years ago. That way you don't get sore hands with all the twisting. I taught crochet to many classes and no one complained of sore hands. Tension makes quite a difference so you get a lovely finish. I cringe when I see people turning hook as thete is no need to do that.
I was doing a stitch yesterday that just grabbed the yarn sort of under the hook no yarn over. The stitch was like a blanket stitch, my hands were sore so i was being lazy and just pulled the wool through it made my work lean to the left the following row leand to the right so my stitch attern came out kind of zig zag instead of straight stitch on top of stitch for each row if you know what I mean.
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a very little girl.....and, like you, I hold my hook like a pen. I also have the yarn running through my fingers. It comes so naturally to me now that I would have to show you how I do it because it just happens!! Strange but true, I do the same thing with my right hand when I'm knitting!! 🤷♀️😊😊😊
Beautiful this is so pretty. My mother used to knit something simillar. Is this a simillar cluster to the one on the Lilac baby bonnet and blanket?
Thank you so much, Amy
Thankyou so much. Really beautiful. Xxx
thanks
I will try this... Subscribed.
Thanks and welcome
Just done this , thank you SOmuch, can you point me to a bonnet and jacket to go with this ?
Thank you for your clear instructions. I havnt crochet for years but just heard I’m going to be a great-granny so am going to make this for my grandaughter. Can you tell me approx how much yarn to buy and best size hook to use to make a large shawl using your pattern.
Hi Allison this is gorgeous. Love. It, it reminds me of the Lacy patterns of the 60s back in the day, you are a great teacher so relaxing to watch, I will do this one for a baby girl that's just been born, huge thanks Allison have a great day, always love to see when you have a new video on xxxx
thanks
Hi Alison u had a doggie hat on here Sunday could u put pattern on you tube please xx
She said on her community page it keeps falling back on her fogs head so she has to adjust her pattern for ear slots. I would like it just for a balaclava
Its on she did it for you. What a wonderful youtube teacher she is not many would stop what they are doing and make a whole video film edit and put it on youtube for 1 fan. Im impressed. Alison could you show me how to build a 5 bedroom house please hahaha🤣😂🤣🏚
Its on my channel now.
Hi, I did 80 stitches so I had 40 holes, then I did 40 rows so I had 40 x40 holes... I dont want to undo it all but the 3 treble 3 chain 3 trbke doesn't always come out I'm the corner. I'm not going to frog this one but coukd you let me know how many stitches you had to start and how many holes x holes should I have. Thank you.
If I remember corectly I think it needs an odd number of holes it's been a long while since I made one
Hi Allison love watching your videos you have learned me how to crochet I have done this blanket and made it my own size but at the end of the round with the clusters I didn’t have enough space to make it even so do I need to have an even number of the waffles your reply would be appreciated but what a beautiful blanket.
yes if i remember correctly, count the ones you have if its odd then you need even if its even you need odd what you can do is turn the blanket sideways and do a new set of squares it shouldnt be noticable but remember it needs to be odd in hight too if its odd. Sorry i cant remember if its odd or even. but you can easily add a strip of boxes down the side but make sure from top to bottom has even or odd too
Thank you Allison I was thinking maybe adding another row that helps looking forward to more of your video’s.
Love all you blanket patterns, but I want to make a larger blanket for my Grandkids to cuddle up with while on the sofa..Do you have patterns for larger blankets? OR, should I just choose one and triple it?
I'd just triple it, I don't know how to write out patterns.
Hi Alison, love this shawl, I have made it a good size and very pleased with myself only one issue, the corners are curled in, don’t know why, I was keeping it lose. Have I missed something along the way!!
Just spray it damp with water then flatten it out on a large towel to air dry place another large towel over the top of it this will flatten the edges where it's curled ( google how to block a blanket) Sometimes yarns just curl at the corners. My mum used to put it on the washing line with clip on pegs at each point to make it straight and peak.
Thank you, will try that , just hoping I have not done something wrong in the corners!
I love this blanket im having different doing the butterfly blanket can u help
are you having problems with the pattern on the edge at the ends?? its only half a wing every 2nd row (i think its been a while since i did it) if you watch the video again. Its very similar to doing the Bavarian blanket.
Hi - I need help before I put the border on. I have 48 squares wide and 43 rows squares long.
I see people were having trouble with even vs odd rows. Shall I make another row to bring it to even 44 rows or, shall I leave it at 43 or 45 rows and crochet one row down the side to make it 49 rows wide. Thanks Karen
try marking one stitch then count around like i say in the video skip stitches then fans skip stitch fan to make sure when you go all the way around you dont have an odd pattern If i remember correctly its fan skip 2 stitches, fan skip 2 stitches, fan all around
love this pattern and all your others too how many gr of wool for a baby shawl please ty
i used 3x 100g balls for this
Thank you for a fabulous video I am ready to do the lace edging do you need to increase on the rounds of the edging
Hello, I love this, but I always end up with one chain stitch left at the end of the first row instead of ending on a treble. Is it definitely an even number of chain to start?
of the pattern or the mesh inside?
if its way at the beginning it could be the way you do your very 1st treble into the chain. When you skip 3 stitches and crochet into the 4th stitch, the 3 you skip makes the very 1st treble you have to count that as your 1st treble. When you go into that 4th chain space that's the 2nd treble crochet stitch.
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel Thank you! Back on track!
Great, Well done, Jen xx
Me too!
Hi Alison i love your channel i have tried this Shawl but the corners were pulling in can you give me any advice please as I want to make it again I love it
Try a half size bigger hook crochet pulls in if it gets tight. If that doesn't help let me know and I will try to help further Xxx
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel Thanks for replying I'm just doing the centre at the moment I will let you know how I get on x
Hi Allison my wife would like to know the measurement of the centre of the shawl as she has 64 stichs but it looks quite small.
Hi, Colin, I don't have the blanket to measure it. Tell her to crochet the chain along side a tape measure to get the width she wants, as long as she has if i remeber correct its odd amount of squares along and an odd number of rows done to keep the pattern around the edge symetrical
Thanks 😊 a lot ❤️🇷🇺
You're welcome 😊
i have learnt so much from you. however i have problems with the caron wool splitting. what am i doing wrong?
So do I sometimes I just try to twist it a bit as I am working with it. Its just so soft I wont give up on it, I think thats why its so soft because its not wound as tight as some yarns. I have one ball of white left and if it keeps splitting I will email them and tell them I hate it when its just splits all the time, I found the white the worst.
It’s actually £20 on Amazon for three balls of this .
Price has gone up everywhere I made this ages ago.
Hi, I’ve only learnt how to crochet recently
Ive tried to make this blanket as you explained,
my corners are not sitting straight, what have I done wrong? Thank you for your tutorial !!
do you have a cluster in each corner? if you have, your tension might be different from mine try an extra chain at the corners between the cluster and the treble to take you around the corners better.
Alison Russell's Crochet and Craft Channel thank you, I will try that x
Hi Alison, first time having a go at this. Also you tube 😊I have ended up with 63 squares length (don’t know how I managed that! I think I done about double that in chain and started on the 5th stitch...I’m currently on 34 squares row breadth...do I keep going to 63 before I start trying to do the fancy bit. I’ve already went through the ball of wool (not worried about using the wool, it’s just that you said 1 ball would do the shawl. So thinking maybe I’ve started too big? All trial and error.. thanks for the video and encouragement to have a bash 😊
mine was half that size, keep going if you have the wool it will look amazing but you have to count the squares... start at the corner and say to yourself cluster in the corner and count along so you have a cluster in each corner or the fancy pattern will be off set.
Why am I not getting a cluster in each corner? I had 64 stitches but end my cluster row with double crochet in the second corner. Mwhat am I doing wrong?
Hi there I love your blanket did I pick you up correct with the size ? You said 64 stitches and 44 rows to make the size you showed at start?
I think so it's been a while since i watched this one, or made one. You can make it any size you like.
I did this shawl but my ends turned up. I am a beginner. What did I do wrong?
Hi I really want to get this right, corners are curling!! I don’t know why please help, I crochet loosely
Pauline, it might be more of a wave if you crochet loosely it might be to wide (a bit wider than corners) making corners curl, corners are naturally a little tighter because there is more stitches in a corner. try one half size smaller hook this will tighten up your crochet along the straight sides so it wont be too loose. That might help
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel thanks Alison, are you saying that it is curling because it’s too loose!
Hi Alison, know you’re going to get fed up with me, you commented to someone that we need odd squares and odd rows is that right!!
Hi Alison I'm trying to make this blanket but I'm not sure how it's meant to stay flat after each round as there is no increase rounds ?
is it 64 chains across what the finished size please as my chain looks v short
yes mine is 64 it stretches when you do the chain 1 miss one bit.
christina newman hi I was thinking the same & I think I’d do 128 chain then follow the instructions making the stitch as instructed & skip 1 chain 1 & make the trebles in the top of every other stitch with a chain between & work into the top of all the treble & a chain between
Hi I've chained 64 and done my first row that's created 32 boxes is that right?
I think its an odd number of boxes I can't remember, It's been a while since I made one. as long as you have enough boxes to to do the border watch the border part in the video im sure I tell you how to count it out you need to start on a cluster in the 1st corner and finish on a cluster in the other corner. You make your inner square first then the border i just can't thing off hand if its even number of boxes or odd. so its best you have the right number of boxes right at the begining.
Hi Alison, me again, would I be to send you a photo, it’s actually looking like a hammock!! I really want to get this rights, it’s for my daughter’s first baby
Many thanks
Pauline
try a smaller hook, if its too open then reduce the hook size. Im sure I used a UK 3,5mm hook
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel hi Alison, I am using a 4 and still curling, going to try s 3.5. One more question, I’ve looked at your video many times, am I right in saying the corners are the same are as the edges apart from the starting corner many thanks
I do the correct chains, follow the instructions but still end up with a single chain left over, so I add another then continue. I have no idea how this happens. EDIT: After having done 5 rows, I checked every row, THROUGHLY, and found where I had mucked up. I refuse to frog it and so, it's a mistake that's hidden.
Hi Alison do you start this beautiful blanket on a chain of 64 ? X
Oh Linda I cant remember, ha ha ha you can do it with that then see of it big enough for you if not use the tail end to add extra chain stitches.
Is that 4 ply or double knitting please Alison and what size is the finished blanket
Hi do u just chain the amount of sts u want for the length
May I ask please the wool you are using is a aran weight yarn. Is there a reason why you are using a 4mm hook 😊😊😊
the yarn is DK a weight 3 in usa (double knitting) it's thinner than aran which is a weight 4 in usa
How many chain for the center please no voice at the start Mabyn it's my tablet thank you
Are you sure the 64sts is wide enough for a shawl, it looks very small to me ??
it grows as you go around it
Hi Alison
Am hoping to make this for my new awaited grandchild. Would you say the comment earlier on 41 rows is the standard size for a shawl and how big does this make the centre please? Love the tutorial.
You make the centre as big as you like then do the border around it. That's what I did. 41 is around a standard but that might vary slightly by the hook size and yarn. (only around half an inch)
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel thank you for your reply. I am using the same hook and wool as you did in the video. Sorry to be dumb but how many chain should I therefore start with if you are doing 64 stitches wide, would it be 128 to allow for the gaps? So used to following a pattern this is my first attempt without one!
first shawl i am trying i have 50 blocks is this to many make my shawl to big when finished what is the ideal amount for larger shawl and rows
if you google crochet average sizes for blankets loads of graphs show up i saved one and printed it out so i had a handy guide to make my chains to the guide (say 40inch x 50) for a cot bed that kind of thing.
Beautiful! Is there a written pattern somewhere?
No, honey, this is out of my head. I can read patterns but can't write them down. I mix and match stitches a lot to make things. I couldn't find a crochet shawl pattern like this so I did my own and filmed it to share with everyone.
@@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel OK. Thank you!! You do beautiful work!
Thank you so much xx
At end of line when you chain four. Does that include the chain one after the treble? X
the chain 4 is counted as a treble plus the chain 1
What size hook do you use for your baby blankets?
