This was incredibly helpful. Not just for creating the toon shader, but for understanding more about how these nodes work. Thank you!
For those that get lost at 11:11 - The color name is no longer under Node tab, but Group tab in the Shader Editor.
I'd also like to add, the MixRGB node is no longer available. It's all been consolidated into the Mix node.
Thank you! I got stuck on this too :)
@@murrowboy Thank you! I also got stuck on this one :)
I don't know what you mean. When I press tab in the node play it shows up fine.
Now its call MixColor and itstead of nod go to group
Btw, when creating a new shader node, you don't have to click on "Search" but you can just press the usual Shift + A and when the menu pops up, press S and it automatically goes into search.
Comment from the future: In the latest version (4.1.1), you can just hit shift+a and instantly start writing :) no more clicking or hitting s - Finally!
I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A TUTORIAL SERIES LIKE THIS FOR WEEKS WITH NO SUCCESS, AND NOW I LITERALLY FOUND THIS CHANNEL BY ACCIDENT!! IM SO HAPPY!! WHAT!!
This is extremely valuable info! Thanks for sharing this and can't wait for part 2!
You are that youtuber!
Love your animation
Thanks, man. I'm Russian and I'm watching this video with subtitles, but you explain everything so well, so I understand everything. I didn't find anything like this in Russian.
Happy you found our video useful!
Great tutorial, a cool effect really well explained! For those doing it on Blender 3.x (3.6 at the time I write this), the "MixRGB" is now "Mix Color", you just keep the first parameter as "Color", and the second one is the operation you need (Multiply, Add, Lighten, etc.)
I dont have that either O,o
David: "hello everyone, my name is.."
Me:*instant sub*"Teach me your ways great one"
For real, I was glancing over at the subscribe button and forgot for a moment that I had clicked and was like "oh..."
That's what I did!
@@Varchesis did the same xD
Literally the same thing happened xD
I really hope you guys find funding for your projects! In the meantime, I hope you'll consider making even more tutorials. This explanation was clear, thorough, and extremely helpful. I imagine both beginners and more advanced users will be happy with the pacing and level of detail provided - and that's no small feat. Thanks for sharing your expertise and keep up the great work!
Thanks Michael! Really appreciate the feedback!
A tip for anyone -- I realized the hard way that the "Base Color" will affect the "Key Light" color, they're basically linked in this setup. If you have turned the Base color to Black, the Key light won't show up at all (but the other lights will). To fix this, you must increase the Base Color up to grey or white, and then the Key light color brightens up with it. Hope this helps someone!
How do you use textures with this setup?
is there no way to unlink it?
I've tried by adding a Combine RGB to the Lighten node, and adding the Key Light to a Add Node like the other lights. This made me able to use even black. But now there's a bleeding of Red, Green and Blue lights. :/
@@yt_Ajay_ plug in image texture into the diffuse.
@@midorifox I made my key light color unlinked to the base color by using a different diffuse node. Instead of having the main diffuse>shader to rgb>separate rgb setup connect to the key light, duplicate that and attach it to the key light's color ramp. Hope that helps.
@@MetrikOner ah, yes that works. Thanks
Using a different colour on Light and rgb is reaaally smart! I had this problem in my works, thank for showing way to Fix it!
Happy to help! Tutorials like this have helped us countless times in the past, we are happy to share our knowledge this time around. More to come!
I love how in-depth this went. I hate just following step by step without actually learning WHY we do something. I'm coming from decades of using 3DsMax so this was a great introduction to working with materials in Blender. 🤗
This is, in fact, a very smart approach to shading and very advanced stuff. But it is delivered in a way even a beginner can comprehend.
Many thanks for a great tutorial!
Finally someone shows some fresh tricks for toon shaders, thank you very much : )
You are a monster! This is what a toon shader all about!
This is a service to humanity.
Absolutely amazing. I've gone prewatched this whole series but now I'm following along step by step and my result is phenomenal.
Something that matters a lot to me is that often, youtube tutorials are not complex enough to allow for the expression of ones own personal tastes or artistic vision. This shader has enough depth that I feel like I can truly tweak it until l have something beautiful of my own rather than just copying your style. I love it.
Toon shading aside, this is a great class on material nodes!
I have just switched from 2.79 internal to 2.93 Eevee, never had a touch on Nodes, this was my first experience. Gotta say, don't understand everything yet, but this tutorial was very valuable for me to learn many aspects of using nodes, not only for making a toon shader, but also concerning various possibilities and inside-node-organisation. You have done very well, your work is being highly appreciated!
@Marc Fuchs Thank you! Some concepts can be a bit difficult to grasp if you're totally new to nodes or shaders in general, but we did try to make this tutorial series as beginner friendly as possible. Glad you found it valuable! :)
Going back through the series now. Really great material. I'd love to see more series on character creation, rigging, etc., basically anything you want to share!
Using RGB lights is such a genius way of controlling multiple sources of light, I never thought about it, it's so amazing, thank you for the tutorial and you have a new subscriber 🙂
but i have problem in adding hdri to this shader. i use gradient texture in world shading but the rgbs in my colors start affecting the shading :( do u know how to turn off.?
I really like how you've made your video thumbnails with the character and the shader example sphere
I really have to say, your tutorials are some of the best I've ever seen - Comprehensive, you explain everything without gettig boring and the results are just stunning! I've also added some cross-hatching to your shader and that is giving a completely different but equally awesome style. Thank you so much for this amazing technique and keep up the great work!
Thanks for the kind words juls23tube! And glad to hear you've been having fun experimenting with the shader. Make sure to tag us if you post your work on Twitter, we'd love to see it.
How do you implement cross hatching?
This so demands a proper "Layered Materials" Node. It seems every other program has this, arranged and defined similiar to photoshop. And would make doing toon shaders, depending on the style, a LOT easier.
100% agreed. In fact, we have something pretty awesome in the works to address this! :)
I watched this video when you released it, I re-watched it today just because I remembered you showed how to use node groups. This is the only tutorial I have seen so far to use node groups and it is very useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I'm definitely a newb when it comes to shading, so I had to watch a couple of parts of this two or three times to figure things out but this is simply amazing! In the end, I got everything working just the way you had it and - even better - I am understanding the concepts behind the process. Awesome job!
I've found your stuff and just binged it.
Here I am, starting again and again.
Brush Rush with Guilherme Freitas sends a warm hug from Brazil
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for explaining everything so clearly and thoroughly.
i am coming from maya so just started learning blender and your tutorials series about shaders it helping me alot. Thank you very much!
Uh, I am pressing charges, my mind has been fatally blown. Thanks so much for the tutorial
For some reason i was worried that you forgot to plug de Blue channel into the 3rd color ramp, then i thougt ''He's a master, no worries''. Awesome tutorial, so well explained that a beginner could follow without problems.
Hey I've watched this tutorial like 3x over for the last couple of days and I am still amazed by this! Thank you so much for this! I have learned alot!!!!! Thank you David!
Thanks a lot Yves, glad you're finding it useful!
Wow this is great! I’m still a bit of a beginner and this is the first tutorial with nodes and stuff I could actually follow! A lot of tutorials just go so fast for a beginner and this is just perfect 👌🏻Thank you so much for this great step by step explanation where you not only tell what in- and outputs to connect but also how to add them because that was a step I was missing everywhere else so far. Can’t wait to see and try the next tutorials 😊
This is beyond amazing! I had to subscribe instantly cause I don't wanna miss a single video you put on. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your amazing knowledge! Best regards from Brazil David!
This is probably one of the best real time toon shaders I have seen! This is exactly what I was always trying to achieve. The trick with the separate RGB is something I would have never come up with, seriously genius!
For easier recognition, you could also color the frames red green and blue
This is really amazing I can't wait for part 2. Your guys series is gonna look great with this shader.
We posted part 2 just now!
Here's the link in case you missed it.

Your name 😂
This is easily one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. Very useful, inspiring and well explained, thank you!
Hey man you dropped something at my home, here's it 👑
Nodes always looked scary to me but your video was easy to understand. Thank you for making this video!
This is insane. Love the fact you explain everything simply once. Finally shaders seem doable
The best NPR shader I've seen so far
im brazilian, here we still don't have much content about it, I am mind blown by the all of this, it looks like i was kidding using nodes so far, thanks a lot for the explanation! 😁✌
I'm in a really important project right now and this tutorial was a very big help for me. I don't know how to thank you :')
this turtorial has helped me alot! I already had a toon shader, but there were a few problems with it, mixing both of them together has fixed it! THANKS
Been using Blender for a good while now and I gotta say; I learned so much from this 1 video.
Thank you, this has been a fantastic help.
Thank you for the kind words, we're glad to hear it! It sounds like you'll enjoy this toon shader tutorial series, some of the later tutorials get a little more complex than this one, but we try to break things down as simply as possible. The nodes can be used in so many different ways once you understand exactly how they work and what they do.
@@LightningBoyStudio There is 1 question I do have; Is there a point in this tutorial series where the node setup used in this tutorial includes textures? Reason I ask is because I'm adding nodes to a model that I want to use Toon Shading for but it comes with it's own textures.
Sometimes I learn something from a video that was not the intended purpose of the video. In this case it's the shader to RGB node. I have so many scenarios in my head right now where this will be so useful! Thanks for all the info! looking forward to the next part!
definitely one of the best tutorials. You are explaining something so complex as nodes and yet it's so easy to follow. Great job, and thanks!
Thanks Carlos! At first we feared the video was too long, but we do enjoy going into detail. That's one of the thing we personally miss in some tutorials, where we often have to complement with other tutorials to totally understand what's happening. :)
Your pacing is 10/10. Thanks for explaining such complex workflow. Kinda reminds me of playing around with ReShade in games to achieve different atmospheres so certain things done here seemed familiar.
Excellent work in the entire serries! Thank you very much for the knowledge sharing!
I have to admit, I've used blender a total of 7 times, so a lot of what youre doing im learning to do like make groups pasting all that stuff. I dont even know the basics but THANK YOU. I've been trying to find a way to make an 2 tone type shader for my 3d comic. I used Daz but never got the results I really liked.
How many times should I press the like button to express how much do I like this video?
The answer is YES
I'm planning an Animation Project in June and I've been wanting to make it using 2D Shaders, so I'm glad to find these vids!
Sometimes RUclips recommendations works! I'm so glad I've found this video I was wondering for so long how to control the highlights independently from the shadows but I still need to know how you added a texture on top of this shader like for the canon ball at the beginning
WHO ARE YOU, OH GREAT ONE?! ) Thank it's awesome info will help in my education video in the future!
Very impressive toon shader. Waiting for part 2. :)
oh wow dude - you came up on my RUclips recommended and I realized we worked together eons ago at Modus. So happy to see you doing such amazing work !!
Haha that's so cool! Were you on the animation team?
@@LightningBoyStudio yup on Sarila (aka Frozen Land lol)
Very comprehensive, thanks for making the video!
As clear, informative and beginner friendly as one can possibly be. Thanks for this brilliant free tutorial man! Love from India. Subscriber +1
Awesome tutorial! An awesome way to create the cartoon shader but also veeeeeryy useful for understanding better how nodes works! Everything is explained, incredible 😮
This series looks great, can't wait to see more!
I never have to pause the video you explained your mindblowing stuff really well sub++
This is really cool! Nodes make my brain hurt. Good thing we have people like you to figure these things out for us dummies. Very useful. Thank you!
could you set it up so, different objects with different main colours, could have the same lights (without having to tweak every material when adjusted) . . . ?
Can’t wait for the tutorial continuation!
Great tutorial.
Digging the beginner’s friendly shortcuts pinpointing (I’m also a heavy shortcuts user no matter the software as it accelerates the iteration speed incredibly).
How do you have so little subscribers? These tutorials and materials are incredible! This is stuff I would pay for!
Thank you! We only started the channel a few months ago, so this is still very much growing! :)
Thank you and great video! I ended up watching it four times now because it would not save the nodes. This last time it finally did save and from the looks of it no one else is having this problem after searching for it. So it could be something I did wrong.
Again, thank you for this awesome video!!!
When nodes don't get saved, it's usually because there's no "user" for that material, so it's discarded when you close your scene because Blender assumes you don't need it. Did you make sure to apply the material to a sphere or some other mesh before saving? Alternatively, you can click on the little shield icon next to your material, if it will create a Fake User for it to make sure the data-block doesn't get lost.
@@LightningBoyStudio I believe I did apply it to the sphere. I will try to recreate the issue and report back with the cause. Thank you for the reply and thank you so much for these videos.
Thanks for the tutorial! I have seen many NPR tutorials but yours fits the style I was looking for!
It is incredible. This style is very beautiful.
Thx for spending time making this tutorial, i haven't tried 2.80 or Eevee before
thanks for this ive been wanting to make a model and i was interested in this style so i need to save this for later when i get into the modeling part
I'm reaaaaaally really new to Blender. I'm still feeling kinda stupid hahaha, but this is incredible. Thank you!
Thx for this tutorial David, i needed some tips about shader for my project!
Absolute genius. Deepest thank you for sharing this technique! Your character looks soo good!
i love you passion, is contagious. you can tell how excited you are about this and it makes me excited. you are awesome.
This is slightly unrelated, but that character looks freaking niiice
Thanks! We are making this series in part to raise awareness about our Dinomancers project, so we are always glad to hear when people like our designs and what we're trying to do! :)
Great tutorial! This solves so many of my problems. Very clearly explained. Thank you!
SO good. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! This is something I wanted to do for a long time. Thank you for your time and your generosity in sharing your expertise. I can’t wait to go through the whole series!
You are really a professional !!! I've been looking this for months. Greetings from Brazil !
David, this helps a lot. Like a lot. Thank you for putting this info forward and out there. Very humble. Respect.
Very elegant solution
You are putting out great content! Curtis Holt just earned you a new subscriber!
Wow, this is very nice and very smart, even though I did find it a bit hard to follow along. I just sometimes missed what you did. I used to know a bit what the shaders and converters do in cycles, but I have forgotten so much and I think now here is even more. A lot to read up on. But thank you very much, this is very helpful.
Thank you so much for this. This really helps bypass some of Eevee's lighting limitations I was having
During the first run, instead of deleting the point light I converted it to a sunlight. Didn't realise its strength/power was at 1000 instead of 1, like in Your setup. So, colors went crazy, shadows even more so, and everything looked messed up. Now that I found the bug, and the shader looks as it is supposed to, I am looking forward to the next part.
Ha! Yes, very important to use sun lights with a strength of 1! Probably should have made it extra clear in the video.
Thanks! I had the same issue!
Backlight looks good - good tutorial
this tutorial was incredible, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You're a great teacher and I will be watching many of your videos to come!!!
Thats awesome. Was looking for a way to create toon shading in Blender, and your tutorial was well explained, too. Since it looks, like there may be further blender tutorials on different topics coming in the future, I've subscribed to you. Keep up the good work.
Loving this tutorial, I've been following along and got some awesome results! I was wondering if you have a video on exporting this blender model, with the new materials, to Unity for a game character?
Or Unreal Engine would be awesome
Excelent tutorial, I subscribed yesterday and I really enjoy learn new thinks about shading and textured with you C:
your work is so beautiful. im very curious how it apply on other object such as metal, cloth, skin, eyes, etc. cant wait to see part 2 👍
Great knowledge of the subject, and I found the way you explain it very good too. Bravo.
Who would dislike this? It's amazing 😄
I was just looking for shader that resembles Arc System Works. Thank you!
This is awesome. Exactly what I've been looking to do with Blender. THANK YOU.
This tutorial is real gem for me and also for others.

Shortest way to do this is select the nodes, and then ctrl+j to put all of them into a frame.
Dude, this is very valuable information, please share more :D. And thank you a lot for the effort put into making this series.
