I am a tubie with a GJ tube and I am NPO (nothing by mouth) so I understood not only from my own health experience but the critical care routine I had to do for my Greek tortoise, it gave her several extra years! I now have had a Hermann's tortoise for the past 10+ years. Testudines have always been my autistic special interest (but I love all herps) so I love watching your videos!

And you don't care if it's got the biggest claws and sharpest teeth, when they get sick, you grab em and do what ya gotta do. I know Lumpy is better now in real time and only because of you. Poor Lumpy, I hope he's feeling better by now. I have guinea pigs and keep the same Oxbow critical care on hand, never really thought about certain reptiles like tortoise needing the same thing. Good luck Lumpy
I had the same problem with one of my Chinese water dragons, She was a 6 year old female, started refusing to eat. The critical care did wonders for her. Plus also had to give her antibiotic shots. did it for a month and seemed to do the trick. started eating again and actually helped but some weight on her. If you love your animal you'll do whatever it takes to save them. Hope lumpy does well.

My grandpa had a feeding tube much the same. If it ever gets stopped up, you can use soda water or coke to help unstop it, if it is ok for your tortoise. Hope he feels better soon.

You should definitely take lumpy to children’s hospitals for educational purposes 🏥. We have many children in the USA who have feeding tubes. (G-tubes).. I love this ❤️ my clients who love to see this

Hate this for Lumpy. Hoping for the best results. I certainly have seen worse cases recover. For instance, I had a 17 inch 75 year old Red Foot that came to me not well. It took me a year of medications, force feedings, lots of fluids and interventions. The last straw for him was while we were in the vet's office, he had an allergic reaction to one of the meds he had just been given. He swelled up and could not breathe! They whisked him into an OR and hit him with a massive dose of injectable antihistamines and we waited. In minutes, he was looking around and wanting to get out of there, which we did after thanking everybody for saving him again. I maintain that that last incident pissed him off so bad, he recovered to spite it. He began eating on his own in two days, the first he ate on his own for as long as I had owned him. He never quit, and became my most dominate, aggressive breeder. Hang in there Lumpy!!
Kenan, incannsoeaknfirst hand for the efficacy and results of critical care and manual hydration. I had a cherry head come to me on deaths doorstep with a URI 2 years ago. The wife and I went through the same process as you are with lumpy. 30 days of oral antibiotics and critical care. She made an amazing recovery, began eating by the 3rd week, appeared to fully recover by 3 months, and, fast forward a bit, laid her first clutch of eggs two months ago! I am sure your efforts will not be wasted.

It is so scary when they are sick, having a fully qualified exotics vet is the most important thing. Never risk taking your tortoise or reptile to a vet that isn’t qualified. If you’re struggling to find one get in touch with the tortoisetable/ tortoise protection group (UK) or turtle conservancy in USA and they will be able to direct you to a proper qualified exotics vet. 🤗🐢🤗

I hope he gets better, with the anatomy of a tortoise I’m not sure what the risk for the aspiration to lungs is. Before each feeding you can check if he’s digesting the contents properly with the syringe because if his condition worsens he won’t and then you’ll just end up pumping contents into stomach till it overflows. It can also help you see how his condition is, always put contents you aspirate back into the stomach and then flush.This might be something you are already doing , just though I’d chime in and good luck !
