At 11:27 he mentioned someone who took the Emperor's place on the throne, he was the Emperor's only friend named Malcador the sigilite, he was a very powerful psyker but mortal, he sat on the throne to keep back the demons as it slowly destroyed him physically, giving the emperor time to kill Horus.
Malcador gave his life to save humanity and the imperium and henceforth was renamed "Malcador the hero"

I highly agree with the Ciaphas Cain suggestion he makes, its basically a comedy series in the grimdark. The idea is Cain is a complete and total coward but accidentally saves the day in the process. He puts on this big act to pretend to be this unwavering hero of the Imperium, but in reality is scared shitless of everything he encounters and is constantly just doing whatever he can to save his own ass, saving the day in the process and only increasing his heroic reputation further, which gets him sent on even deadlier missions, which he survives and becomes even more of a heroic figure, etc. The whole series is written as his memoirs and is a great example of a comedic story in the otherwise eternally dark and depressing 40k universe.

    • @tau-5794
      @tau-5794 10 месяцев назад +4

Another funny aspect is that Cain may be much more of an actual hero than he believes, he just has impostor syndrome. If you read between the lines, he actively seeks out dangerous opponents and enemy leaders when he could easily just run and avoid them, which he rationalizes as "needing to preserve his reputation".

    • @MartynWilkinson45
      @MartynWilkinson45 7 месяцев назад

Yeah, the inquisitor who's collecting his journals together to write the books describes him as one of the best swordsmen in whatever sector he happens to be in, yet he describes himself as competant. He took on a Khornate space marine in solo combat. But because he ran away once early in his career, he believes himself a coward. Poor guy honestly earned his in universe rep, but he'll never accept it.

Small clarification on Thunder Warriors since Brickest doesn't go into it, but they were also hella unstable. It wasn't as much "okay, you are done now, time to die" and more of "you are walking barrels of explosive tech full of psychopathic tendencies and you have no intention to change" - they were created to kill and slaughter, and they weren't really built to last to begin with.

@19:30 On the "perpetuation of hatred" angle, it doesn't help that the Age of Strife ended up destroying most of the friendly aliens out there. Before that point, humans peacefully coexisted with a number of alien races, but during the chaos and horror of the Age of Strife, all of them either went extinct or turned on humanity to survive. Basically all the nice aliens from before that time are dead or ended up warped into not-so-nice aliens. The cultural memory of this time, and the thousands of years of torment and oppression by alien powers that many human worlds suffered in its aftermath, are the reason why extreme xenophobia is the norm for humanity in the setting.
Then when the Ecclesiarchy became a thing, they made hatred of aliens into a key religious tenet, solidifying it in the Imperium's culture. So now, when the occasional new race of friendly aliens crops up, humans are already irrationally afraid and hateful toward them, so they tend to be exterminated very quickly by the Imperium, unwittingly perpetuating the "truth" that all aliens are hostile and evil by wiping out any new ones that could overturn that trend.

Alicia, if you want to find out more about the Emperor, Luetin 09 literally has a series specifically for you. It's filled with exactly what you expect, mysteries and half truths because the Emperor is that kinda character
If you want to learn more about the Primarchs overall, Bricky has his every Legion explained video. But if you want a more in depth video on specific Primarchs, ItalianSpartacus has you covered. He's fun, but he gets the lore right and his videos are only 30-45 mins.
If you want more funny, drama filled stuff then like everyone else, I'll recommended Bruva Alfabusa's If the Emperor had a TTS device series. Warning, you're going to get so fxcking blue balled by the end of the series lol

One chatter: "Malcador is a close second."
Actually, depending on who you determine the one figure from Son of The Forest book might be, I would say Malcador isn't completely wiped out. In my humble opinion, it wouldn't be sanguinius, since it is very heavily implied that his soul was split to inherit the Saint and The other one that occasionally saves the blood angels.

To add some more context to what happened with Magnus and the webway.
The Emperor was actually on the frontlines of the Great Crusade for a while, and left one day to work on "a secret project on Terra" which was the Human webway. Part of the process of making it included making a massive psychic barrier in the warp around it, in order to ward off chaos. Now, Tzeench goes talking Magnus. Telling him in feigned concern all about the imminent events that constitute the Horus Heresy, which instigate him to attempt sending a psychic message as a warning to Big E. A warning that bounced off of the barrier of the Human webway, so he proved the difference between Intelligence and Wisdom by smashing the barrier to send his warning. With the barrier destroyed, demons rushed in and charged directly at Terra, locking down Big E on the Golden Throne in order to hold off the incoming horde.
So, Magnus and his legion were grounded on his home planet until a certain event in the Horus Heresy happened.

Concern with doing Reading Steams; Games Workshop went through a major legal C&D announcement only about a year or so ago, discouraging a lot of fan-content makers to skip out for other franchise options. "If The Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device" was a beloved series that stopped on a cliffhanger and can't go back until GW walks back their legal position, and Bruva Alfabusa (the channel that had been orchestrating EHTTS) shifted away from Warhammer toward World of Darkness and expanding into other things while continuing to work on their animation process and style.
Bricky & Company manage to skirt the line with a mix of live games, far fewer videos, and Legally Distinct options.
Mind you I'd absolutely watch or at least listen to a read-through of their books, but it seems worth the warning. Plenty of reaction video channels have gone over Bricky's stuff and it's been fine. Book Reviews also seem to be okay from what I've seen elsewhere rather than complete read-throughs.

3:42 We do sort of know. The Emperor is from ancient Sumeria in Mesopotamia 45k years ago. He was average looking, dark skinned and average heighted insanely powerful psyker created as a result of a ritual mass-sacrifice of all human Shamans as a composite soul weapon to protect humanity agains the Chaos Gods (basically a minor-Chaos God in the same way as Slaanesh ate the souls and bodies of the Aeldari). Because of this, he is not only the strongest Psyker to have ever lived, he is also one of the perpetuals (biologically immortal).
The Emperor's physical appearance was a phychic illusion, and everyone saw him differently and he had changed his identity quite often, and only the silent sisters could pierce through his illusions (which is where we know what he really looks like).
And no, he isn't a rotting carcass either, that is also just an illusion. But he is trapped and completely drained and overwhelmed by the Golden throne thanks to Magnus damaging it and opening a permanent chaos portal right under it, and there is no Malcador to replace him anymore (like he did to go fight against Horus) to let him recover
Not much is confirmed about which identities he used before he became the Emperor of mankind, but we know he is the source of Saint. George fables when he took down the escaped Void Dragon shard, and before that we know he was one of humanity's earliest warlords called Neoth
Most of the history and events right before and during the great crusade are extremely unreliable, since the Emperor and Malcador used their powers to alter memories at massive scales to achieve their goals and to remove any memories and knowledge of Chaos and his dealings with them away from the memories of humanity and even the Primarchs to greatly weaken the Chaos Gods.
But yeah, TL;DR; we know quite a bit about him and his plots , but we also know he has been manipulating historical narrative and events a lot, and ALL information coming from inside the Imperium iscompletely unreliable propaganda. The other perpentuals and surprisingly some Xenos records are the most reliable sources of information regarding the Emperor and the birth of the Imperium

To be fair to Sanguinius, he had *just* run an ABSOLUTE boss gauntlet before fighting Horus: one of Khorne's greatest demons, followed by his brother Angron turned daemon-Primarch, then followed by 1-v-1-ing an actual TITAN (a 30-50+ ft. tall warmachine), *and then* he fought Horus knowing he would most likely die, but he had to fight anyways because there was a chance he'd win and save his father.

In case you were curious why the emperor turned on the thunder warriors after the unification wars. If i remember correctly the methods he used to create them were rushed and as a result thunder warriors would become more and more unstable until they would eventually go beserk, also they were created specifically for the unification wars and weren't really suited for the emperor's plans to retake the rest of the galaxy.

I’ll point out that the M50 Ontos aka “The Thing” was an extremely successful military vehicle make by farmers (literally), who took a light tracked chassis (basically the bottom of a small farm tractor) and welded 6 recoiless rifles to the top, using .50 BMG rifles as spotting scopes - one for each recoilless rifle since they couldn’t align all the guns (they were farmers, not mechanical engineers of course). See the Fat Electricians video on it for a good summary. My dad loved them in Vietnam as he was an artillery captain and when one was in his area of operations he knew all he’d have to do was provide indirect fire (ex: fire over the top of a hill) since The Thing could easily outgun anything the Viet Cong could oppose them with (each gun was anti-tank capable….and it had 6 of them).

Gotta feel for Magnus to be honest
He was told (and bullied) outright into repressing his Psyker powers, and by extension so were his sons, which to them was like denying a part of who they are, which im sure many of us can relate to.
Then the Council of Nikea happened where it became law that Psykers were essentially outlawed, and despite Magnus demonstrating the advantages psykers could provide for the imperium provided they are tuaght to properly harness thier powers, even his own brothers (including the very few he was close with) voted him down, further making him feel ostracised.
But despite all this, he remained loyal and loved his father. He defied the law and continued evolving his Psyker powers until he eventually had a vision of the Horus Heresy revealed to him, and in desperation to save his father and everything he’d worked for, Magnus poured every ounce of his willpower into breaking the Psychic Wall around Terra so he could warn the Emperor.
But once again the universe shat on Magnus, because I’m breaking the psychic wall, he inadvertently allowed Daemons to invade Terra.
Absolutely depressed at this point, he sat in his tower on Prospero and didn’t even warn his sons that the Space Wolves were coming to destroy thier Homeworld, because Magnus felt like he deserved death.
But when the carnage began, Magnus decided he couldn’t let his sons die, and joined the defense, ripping out one of Leman Russes hearts and eventually teleported his legion from Prospero and into the warp…riiiiiiight into the clutches of Tzeentch, who promised he could “fix” the geneseed mutations occurring en masse across his legion.
Honestly past Magnus did nothing wrong.
    Present Magnus not so much

So about those Horus Heresy books. Dunno if you'll commit to reading all like 40 books but if you're going to read the first one, I would highly suggest you commit to the first three at minimum, or up to Fulgrim, the fifth book. The only weak one amongst the first five books is the second one and personally I think Fulgrim is the best of the five. The reason I make this recommendation is because the first three ones are the core of the first contiguous stretch of the Horus Heresy story and it goes up to the fifth book after which the series takes a few detours from the story, jumping around from place and time to another to tell a different fragment of the overall story.
I'm currently working through book 8 so I don't know past that.

  • @Scarabswarm

I'm a fan of dark comedies, and so as the books Bricky mentioned go, I am a big fan of Ciaphas Cain, and The Infinite and the Divine.
The Ciaphas Cain books are the memoirs of a man who is hailed as a hero of the Imperium, but whose internal monologue during all his heroic moments is: "Sh#t, how did I get myself into this, and how can I run away without anyone noticing?". Whether you take his self-deprication and claimed cowardice seriously or not is up to the reader. They are lighthearted, funny, witty, and occasionally very silly, while being contrasted against the sheer horrors of the 40k universe.
The Infinite and the Divine is a look at two famous Necron characters, and their relationship. Which is essentially that they absolutely love to hate each other. The plot covers a 10,000-year-long game of cat and mouse between two grumpy old men. It is hilarious, and infinitely quotable.
Bricky said the Gaunt's Ghosts books like First and Only were like Band of Brothers. Personally, it reminded me of Sharpe's Rifles (though that may be too old a reference these days). A serious war drama, with a focus on characters and the intrigue that goes on behind the scenes on the Imperial side.

There are some new informations about the Emperor in the last books of the Siege of Terra series. There it is described, that not even his oldest friend Malcador really knows his true name or true form. With his psycich powers, he changes his appearance to whatever is needed at that moment. In one moment, he is seen as a Wise King, who is sitting on a throne and when he makes himself ready to teleport onbort Horus' Flagship, he takes the form of the golden Warrior King once again. He chosed this form at the great crusade, because he knew his Sons wouldn't had followed him.
For his immortality... GW helds his true background shady. In one of the earliest concepts of 40K, the story was, that he was the reincarnation of a mighty druid circle, which each souls were always reborn with all their previous memories so that the others would recognise each other. They knew, that the Chaosgods were rising and devour the souls of their former comrades. So they made a ritual, which gave all their powers to an unborn child which was later known as the Emperor. That background story is outdated but at least something, until GW comes with another explanation for the new canon. From there on, he grew but couldn't die from age anymore. He is also a so called "Perpetual", which are humans, who has some sort of powers and where chosen to lead and guide humanity. There were some others like Ollanius Persson, who is the oldest amongst the Perpetuals and 8.000 years older then the Emperor.
The Emperor might not be the oldest, but by far the most powerful of them. In the Siege of Terra series, it is described, that he stood alone against the might of all 4 Chaosgods while sitting on the Golden Throne and manipulating the warp to change the odds of the outcome.
