Van's Aircraft RV-10 Build: Day 24 - Game Changing Deburring Tip (8-6 & 8-7)

  • Continuing work on the horizontal stabilizer, I share a really great tip (literally and figuratively) that we learned recently that I wish we had known about on this day while deburring all of the ribs for the HS. We also installed some really large rivets that were larger than the ones listed on our chart for our pneumatic squeezer and I go over how we worked around that.
    The Van’s Air Force forum post with the deburring advice from Erik (KC10FE) - Thank you Erik!!

      Oh cool!! Thanks for your post on VAF! Ty found it and I already had the right dremel bit so we tried it and it is awesome!! That has come in SO handy in so many tight spaces. Thanks again for sharing your idea 😁 any other suggestions, tips or tricks you have to share?

      Another tip for the million rivet holes in the skins, use the dewalt electric hand screw driver with the three bladed flute deburiing tip. The electric screw driver is the one, when you twist your wrist, it will slowly turn. That made deburring all those holes a ton faster. I think you can see it in the picture in my deburring post.

      We have a small low power electric drill that we bought for cheap at Home Depot to use with our deburring bit. Goes slow enough not to countersink the holes, but like your screwdriver suggestion it sure makes deburring those large skins go faster! It’s the only thing we use that dinky little drill for, but it’s totally perfect for that so it was well worth it 😉

    Thanks so much for this I have been trying to think of something like this. During building the tail I kept wondering why no company had produced little 3M bit sets for RV builders. Def a market for it

    That tip about making your own deburring bits for the dremel was genius. I just spent hours deburring the ribs for the flaps. Really wish I would have watched this video earlier today🤦‍♂️.

      @@PlaneLady , I agree. Very cool. Just before I saw your video, I ordered this a few days ago...www.gesswein.com/p-7784-3m-scotch-brite-unitized-wheel-set.aspx. My guess is your home grown solution will still better than the small sized thin 3m wheel set I just ordered from a jewelry supply place. If my solution works well, I am committed to posting somewhere for the benefit of all.

      Y’all have had some good tips that have been helpful! Plus you’re nice enough to answer our random questions too 😜 fingers crossed - we’re starting sealing the first fuel tank tonight 🤞🏻

      @auburnaviator6167 4 года назад

      Fingers crossed for y’all too. I just installed my fuel sender units in both my tanks so once the proseal dries I’ll be dumping water in for an initial leak test. Pending no leaks there the rear baffles will hopefully go on next week sometime.
      I agree, once we’re all finished building it’d be awesome to all do an RV-10 trip somewhere!

      Thanks Auburn! Good luck to you too! We were able to divvy up the work on the wings and Ty’s been doing the L tank while I’ve been doing the main spars (aka countersinking hell 🙄). But feels like we’re making good progress tackling 2 parts at a time. We will have to find a fun spot where we can all meet up when we’re done 😊

    I wanted to get your impression of your Plane Tools kit, did you order the RV10 tool kit or did you order tools as you went? I was looking to get the kit and wanted to get your opinion. Thanks!

    • @PlaneLady
      @PlaneLady  4 года назад

      Hey Thaddeus, we ordered the RV-10 tool kit from Cleaveland Tool but we made some tweaks to the kit. You can get an excel spreadsheet from them and make changes to customize it and still get the discount they give for buying a kit (I think it’s an 8% discount that you’re getting on all the components in the kit but I’m not sure so make sure to check with them). So for example, we removed the c frame and added the DRDT2, we added the pneumatic squeezer, we added more clecos, we added another deburring handle so both of us could deburr at the same time, things like that.
      We have since bought other tools from them since we started, things we thought we needed (like more clecos and small diameter dimple dies) or wanted (like a longeron yoke, tank dimple dies, etc). It’s been very easy to just call Annette over there and tell her what we want to get and most of the time it goes out the same day and we’ll get it in a couple days.
      So we did both - we ordered the kit (and customized it), but we have ordered other things as we went. If you’re concerned about getting things in the kit that you won’t really need that isn’t the case. I’m pretty sure we used just about everything we got while building our emp kit. Hope that helps! 😊
