Genetically Modified Guitar Trees

  • I stand in my workshop, which looks more like a lush greenhouse than the wood shops of the past. The air is filled with the scent of soil and blooming flowers. There are no saws, no screeching power tools-just the rustling of leaves and the distant hum of bees hard at work.
When I was a child, guitars were made from massive trees, but not like this. They were felled, chopped, sawed, and planed into submission. I remember visiting a guitar factory with my father, the air thick with sawdust and the scent of wood shavings. It was beautiful in its own way, but something about it always felt destructive and harsh, as if nature was being coerced into producing something it wasn't meant to.
But now, thanks to advances in gene editing, we can grow guitars directly from the earth, and every step of the process is filled with life.
It starts with the seeds. Each one containing a unique set of genetic instructions. Using CRISPR technology, I've designed these seeds to grow into specific guitar shapes, with necks and bodies that are already part of the tree's natural growth pattern. Some seeds are programmed to produce slender electric guitars, while others are designed for thicker, more robust acoustic models.
It takes years for the trees to mature, but during that time, I am constantly tending to them. I use a combination of nutrients and natural elements to guide their growth. Bees are my best workers, pollinating the trees and ensuring that the correct genetic traits are carried from one flower to another. Each bee has a tiny chip attached to it, tracking its movements and collecting data on its pollination patterns.
As the trees grow, I use beetles with genetically altered mandibles to etch and carve intricate designs into the bark, creating beautiful patterns that will become the guitar's decorative rosettes and inlays. They move in coordinated lines, directed by subtle pheromones that I release into the garden. Their work is slow but precise, adding a level of detail that traditional tools could never achieve. It's a harmonious process, a symbiotic relationship between the luthier and nature.
The trees grow steadily, their shapes becoming more defined with each passing season. The branches twist and curve to form the necks of the guitars, and the trunks swell into the bodies. When the time comes to harvest them, there's no need for cutting or sawing. I simply encourage the tree to release its guitar-shaped growth by adjusting its nutrient intake and exposing it to specific light frequencies. It's a gentle process, one that feels more like a birth than a harvest.
When the guitars are ready to play, it's an entirely different experience. You don't hold them in your lap or sling them over your shoulder-instead, you hug them, embracing the tree's natural curves. The vibrations resonate through your body, the music flowing from the heart of the tree into your own. It's intimate, personal, and profoundly connected to the natural world.
I walk through my workshop, listening to the gentle hum of bees and the quiet rustling of leaves. It's a peaceful place, where technology and nature coexist in harmony.
I've been building guitar trees for nearly a decade, and each one has its own unique story. Some were inspired by classic designs, while others emerged from dreams and imagination. Every time I walk through my workshop, I'm reminded of the possibilities that come from merging science with art, technology with tradition.
This is guitar-making, where music grows from the earth and every note carries the warmth of the soil.
Where luthiers are gardeners, and guitars are the fruit of their careful tending.
