    An update on the two worm bin:
    11/10/22
    A slight increase in the population of fungus gnats was observed and monitored using yellow sticky traps which were employed two weeks previous to this date. The topmost layer of the bedding was allowed to dry over the previous week so that a solution of bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) could be added to the bin. Bti is a naturally occurring soil bacteria that, when ingested by the larvae of fungus gnats causes them to stop feeding and prevents them maturing to adult stage thereby controlling the population. The dry top layer of bedding was wetted by misting with a solution of Bti and incorporated into the rest of the material in the bin so as not to over wet the material. The solution was made by soaking ¼ of a “Mosquito Dunk” (commonly used in ponds to control mosquito populations using the same mechanism as previously described here for fungus gnats) in a five gallon bucket of non-chlorinated water. The worm/wisp/juvenile/and cocoon population was not counted this week.

    I noticed you have a lot of worms in your bin. Here's my big question. What do I do if my worms outgrow their bed??? I don't have a lot of room for multiple beds. We just had an unusual two week freeze and although the bed is insulated, I had to bring it into my tiny house, (actually it's currently residing in my bathtub). Eventually would like to have the worms living under deep cover out of doors in the soil, but not quite there yet.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      The compost worms will actually self regulate to fit the bin you have them in!! This worm tower has around 6000 worms in it and was started with 2000 worms two years ago. I think it got to its max capacity with in the first year!! If you don't want to split your bin, no worries! They are just as happy to eat your food scraps and make castings for you if you keep them in the same bin forever!! (My wife has put me on a strict 3 worm bin diet because she knows I'd have 50 by now😂)
      I bring my one outdoor bin into my garage once or twice a year when we get a frost or freeze. Jason over at @clivesconundrumgarden has an interesting way of insulating his worm bin in Victoria Canada...here is a video on it: ruclips.net/video/GQCeXFFY5w8/видео.html This is his first winter doing it but I think he is on to something!! Nice worm ball there near the peppers and banana. So did you reach a conclusion after doing this experiment in regards to which food is fastest/most attractive to the worms? Kinda seemed like they were mad rushing all of it about equally

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад +1

      Thank you! They did seem like they mad rushed it all at once!! 😂🤣😂 All the foods I put in were fast foods in my experience except for the banana peels. I put in a lettuce stalk, strawberry tops, two pieces of pumpkin and two masses of chopped up peppers along with a whole pepper. The lettuce and strawberry tops were nowhere to be seen on day 5 and the top pumpkin was there on day three gone on day 5. The two chunks of pumpkin I put down in the feeding zone were also gone on day 5. The chopped up peppers were being devoured on day 5 but gone on day 15 and the whole pepper had its skin and a bit of flesh on it at day 15....so it looks like the lettuce, pumpkin and strawberry tops were devoured first followed by the peppers. The lettuce stalk and two pumpkin chunks had about the same volume as one of the pepper masses so I'd say lettuce, pumpkin and strawberry tops are super fast foods and the peppers are a fast to medium food where as the banana peels are a slow food. If I had dug in on day 3 I might have seen the difference between the lettuce, strawberry tops and pumpkin...But with a 6000 worm bin almost everything seems like a fast food!! I'm sure there would be a bigger difference in days to be consumed in a 1-2K worm bin!! Thanks so much for all your support & watching my videos!!🪱🪱🪱

    Is the casting texture affected by the bedding material?
    I heard coco coir gives a different texture than cardboard!
    What do you think! Is this worth experimenting?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      Well, I'm a firm believer in experimenting to find out!! I haven't noticed a difference based on different bedding material or food scraps for that matter. My first tray in this VermiHut was filled with coco coir. What I do find makes a huge difference in texture is the amount of moisture. I have had castings that are very wet to very dry and it is the difference between feeling like I am playing with mud or clay to feeling like they are tiny pebbles or big grains of sand falling between my fingers. But, I have to think the nutrient value makes a big difference depending on what we feed them!! Great question!! Thanks so much for asking and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
