I really appreciate how Lilo is written. They wrote her as a problematic child bc that’s how a lot of children who have to deal with the trauma of losing their parents, especially as young as her, act. I love how they don’t write her as a nuisance, but as a child who’s gone through something really terrible and as a result acts different compared to the average child or the other girls in the movie. It isn’t just her being the quirky kid, and it isn’t the characters victimizing her too much or looking/acting w disgust around her bc of how she acts out.
@@Zeagods-CyberShadow yea and I love how the only characters who didn’t understand/treat her like a normal girl were the uptight girls w the tricycles (which due to their parents and age is actually really realistic), and at first the aliens (again, really realistic they are _literally_ aliens)
Can we talk about how David is the best boyfriend? Super nice to Lelo, helps Nani find a job, and doesn’t freak out about Stitch being an Alien. Heck, he helps them rebuild their house iirc.
@@DepravedCoTApologist I took him being in their photos at the end as implicit confirmation that they formally got together and he was more closely integrated into their new family unit once their situation calmed back down and they had actual structure/support via galactic protection.
Fun fact about Lilo & Stitch. Aloha Oi is a song originally written by Hawaii's last Queen before the country was anexed, and it's basically her farwell to her country as she knew it before it was forcibly taken by an invading power. I find it incredibly powerful that they used it as a symbol of Nanis pain over her family being torn apart by agents of that very government. Especially for disney in the 2000's.
The only thing is that makes this song bitter is that she herself didn't experience Hawaii as an untouched country. It was told to her by her parents or grandparents who were the last few Hawaiians who knew what true Hawaiian language and culture was before the British and Americans. The song was a eulogy for a Hawaii she never knew.
*Fun Fact:* Treasure Planet's box office was so low because Disney, on a urge of dumbness, decided to put it on cinemas alongside Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
That, on top of an almost nonexistent marketing for the movie. And the marketing we DID have was appalling. It's almost like the higher-ups WANTED this movie to flop
I almost feel like Disney sabotaged Treasure Planet. They kept dragging their feet on letting M+C make it and then released it in the shittiest possible weekend.
The thing with Tiana is that she and Naveen are at the far ends of the working mindset. Naveen is enjoying life but is also being incredibly lazy, while Tiana is overworking herself and so goal focused that she’s letting the joys of life go by. Their relationship is Tiana helping Naveen develop a work ethic and Naveen teaching Tiana that she can focus on her goals and enjoy life too. They help each other balance out.
IMO, they're the best Disney couple. They're bond is healthy and strong, they're willing to make sacrifices for each other, they learn a lesson from each other, they're just perfect together.
18:35 To be fair, I haven't seen the film in a while, but I think the lesson Tiana was supposed to learn was to not focus on achieving her dream to the unhealthy degree she displayed at the beginning of the movie. She was working so hard to raise the money, that she was: - Staying up late to the point of only getting seconds of sleep each morning (displayed during the time skip where she entered her room in her maid uniform and then had to get ready to work at the diner) - Constantly choosing work over hanging out with her friends (shown during her conversation with said friends) - Having to be convinced by Charlette (Tiana's closest and best friend) to take time off work and go to her ball, and even then Charlette had to give her a huge tip to make up for the money Tiana could potentially lose by not working. Her life hinged so much on achieving her dream, that when the guys said someone else bought the building she was gonna buy for her restaurant, she spiraled into a depression before her encounter with Naveen shifted her mind elsewhere.
Just wanted to say that I agree, so much. The whole point is that a dream job is not everything in life, and it certainly isn't worth working yourself to death for. Tiana definitely had a lesson to learn at the start of the movie.
Your comment needs to be higher up, listening to his rant about Tiana being a frog was the most irritating thing ever. Actually I've changed my mind, the entire PATF review was irritating
@@Liam_Phoenix nah, his criticism is completely valid Yeah Tiana did have a lesson to learn That doesn't mean it's not weird af that as soon as Disney makes a movie with black leads they spend 80% of the run time as frogs
Just saw the movie for the first time last week. Imo I don't think she had a lesson to learn. She literally needed the money to take care of herself and open her own restaurant. I can understand in hindsight that she focused a little too much on work to the point where she wouldn't hang out with people and enjoy herself, but given her situation, I don't blame her. I found it kinda realistic
ok but the scene where people were saying Goob’s binder was cool and if he wanted to come over with him immediately going “they all hated me” is still one of the funniest scenes in any movie i’ve seen
Lilo's parents died in a rainstorm and that's why she gives the sandwiches to Pudge (since he controls the weather). She doesn't want to lose Nani too.
I'm glad we got Lilo and Stitch at all honestly, but I'm so upset that they cut out that MASSIVE deleted scene of her scaring the tourists away from the beach just to punctuate how much she resents her home being treated like a vacation resort where she's basically seen as a photo opportunity just for being a native islander. That scene got so close to being finalized before it was cut too, literally only needing to be colored and cleaned up, it's such a shame because the only leftover from that concept is her taking pictures of tourists as a way of turning the tables on that disrespect. The movie doesn't give any context to her photos except to make it look like a quirky hobby instead of a calculated "see how you like it" revenge behavior. Then AGAIN when she's vengeful to her lil white friends predominantly taking up space in hula dancing school while going out of their way to other her and make her feel unwanted, the movie tries to make SURE white audiences can't pick up that maybe part of her frustration has to do with the other islanders trying to understand her trauma and grief, while Murtle just flat out calls her crazy to her face. The original uncut Lilo and Stitch was gonna be about how hard it is for a child to grapple with her culture being turned into theme park bullshit and it would have gone hard as hell.
As an islander, I really wish they didn't cut that scene out. It would have made the movie so much more impactful (not that it already isn't of course)
there was also another deleted scene that further explored how traumatized she was by her parents' death. basically, stitch fucks up by slapping away a fish (i believe to be the same fish she feeds sandwiches) and laughing when the fish gets eaten by seagulls, and lilo gets really mad at him and says "you must never let your family die!". this sentence means that lilo feels responsible for her parents' death bc she believes the fish she feeds sandwiches controls weather, and her parents died in a car accident caused by heavy rain. she must've forgotten to feed him that day, which made her believe he was upset and therefore made it. this movie could've gone so much harder, damn.
Next video: Why Chicken Little is worse than Ralph Breaks the Internet Next next video: Why Meet the Robinsons is better than Ralph Breaks the Internet
@Freesmart I guess Ralph Breaks the Internet might be the best cinematic disaster in terms of quality, considering how many cinematic disasters are even worse.
He went from "I actually really liked chicken little as a kid" to "This is why kids shouldn't have opinions." And I have never felt so relatable in my life. 😂😂😂
Either way I still think that the part, where the animated animal characters are watching the real, live-action Indiana Jones in the movie theatre is just so randomly genius, that it cannot be topped.
Chicken Little is a kind of special memory for me, mainly because it was the first Disney movie I watched in a theater that I remember downright disliking lol
I'm pretty sure a lot of the whole point in princess and the frog was that Tiana *didn't* deserve to be turned into a frog, and that this collateral damage is what triggers Navine's character growth
Yea, you don't have to deserve something to have it happen to you, and it also doesn't mean you can't learn from it, she learned that you can't be happy from burning the candle at both ends, you have to have people you love, it's a good message
There's actually a deleted segment of Lilo and Stitch that I think was a real shame to be omitted. In Lilo's room the walls are plastered with photographs of seemingly random people. This was actually explained to be due to the fact that tourists would take photos of Lilo in public because she's a "real hawaiian girl" (a scene specifically cut was a car full of tourists taking a photo of her in passing without consent). So in protest she takes candid photos of tourists and hangs them up on her wall. I guess the whole aspect was cut because Disney wasn't ready to tackle that kind of racism. Learning about it made Lilo and Stitch that much better to me. EDIT: I was actually reminded/informed about that car scene in the comments below, none of the drivers take a picture of Lilo, but ask her where the beach is. One of the drivers ask her if she speaks english. Soon after Lilo arrives on the beach and a tourist remarks that she is "a real native", and another takes a picture of her. I conflated the two events into one, please forgive my senile brain.
It also would've gone hand in hand with Nani's job at the luau. It really wasn't Hawaiian at all. It perpetuated stereotypes of Hawaiian culture that tourists believe, aka taking anything remotely Polynesian and calling it Hawaiian specifically. Nani's outfit, for example, is more Tahitian. David works as a fire performer, and that particular art is Tahitian as well. A Hawaiian luau doesn't look like that either. It's not a restaurant or a place, but a banquet or party. Nani calls her former boss a vampire, and I think they could've explored more how racist Nani's job actually was.
I don't remember it going like that. I recall that they were trying to get to the beach (dumbasses don't realize that Hawaii is literally a freaking island, just drive anywhere and you'll eventually find one), and there were some punks who asked Lilo if she could "Speak English", it was more showing the ignorance of the tourist rather than the whole picture thing. Unless there was another deleted scene I didn't get to see.
Honestly, Jon Silver and Jim Hawkins relationship has to be my favorite of any Disney movie, which is saying a lot. Simply because it's one of the few movies where the villain and the hero interact with each other positively. They help each other grow, despite the fact Jim, and the audience, already knows Silver is the villain. We're all told this fact when Jim's handed the map. Yet, throughout the movie, we watch as the two grow closer and become better people thanks to one another, all the while we know that it has to end eventually. Silver acting as a sort of father figure to Jim, who comes from a broken home, and helping him grow into a confident young man. Whereas Jim helps Silver realize that there's more to life than treasure, that it's good to appreciate the nonmaterial things. Their relationship is what makes Treasure Planet such a good movie for me.
Exactly. I get that shaff doesn’t like the rest of the movie but honestly it doesn’t bother me much. Just seeing silver and Jim interact makes up for everything and else :)
Agreed and it has an excellent message. Louis makes several mistakes throughout the movie, but he only gets to become a famous scientist in the future by working through his mistakes until he corrects them. This movie is probably the main reason that I am currently 3 semesters away from becoming a Chemical Engineer, because when your homework is so hard that there are no Google results when you search for it, the only thing you can do is keep moving forward until you get it right.
@@rjcorreia3788 really, one of my only problems is that it's paced kind of weirdly, especially in the big final battle, but aside from that it's solid. I really love the message of how Lewis decides that meeting his mom probably won't solve everything, and really, it's up to him to make choices for his life. It's a pretty heartfelt movie that I think is underrated.
For me Treasure Planet is the peak of creativity. Taking an already existing story, a pirate story and puting it into space, but completely rewrite the laws of space, plus adding alien characters, sailships, with solar sails flying in the sky, and putting all of this into a steampunk setting is just brilliant.
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 And they did do that!! The visual concepts play into the story as well, from creating a whole new world to making a more modern story to fit the more modern aesthetic (at least, more modern than plain old Ye Olde England.) CinemaWins even made a joke about how the cannons on the ship actually served a purpose in taking down the exploding star bits.
@@yunseaweed they serve a purpose in details, like B.E.N.'s memory, the opening to the treasure room, etc. But there is nothing about it that really advances the story
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 Y'know what, fair. Any arguments I'd make would probably be grasping at straws lol. Actually, this whole conversation made me realize that Treasure Planet is just a Treasure Island Steampunk AU fanfic that RonJohn made. No wonder I love the movie so much.
I like how there aren't really villains in Lilo and Stitch. They're just obstacles. Each of the antagonists, like agent Bubbles and the galactic space federation are just trying to do their job and want to seek the best for either Lilo or for the safety of the world. In the end, the villains just get a new perspective on Stitch and find to accept him as a part of Lilo's family
That's what I love the most about it, there's no classic villain. The tragedy Lilo and Nani got involved in, Stitch's problems to adapt, the lack of institutional help to broken families... those are the real villains
As a Native American, while I do agree with some of your points, Brother Bear is incredibly important to me. I’m Plains Cree/Métis and seeing the bit about the northern lights relating to our ancestors was a joy to see. Having some positive representation without it excusing MMIW or the genocide of our people/sexualizing our women it makes me happy.
@@horseyfacetheglorious No, yeah, I also feel that. I would love to have a movie where it focuses more on the the culture rather than just the animal aspects
"The aesthetic of treasure planet didnt make sense to me, i dont think the old timey setting meshed well with the furturistic tech" ah, so you never went through a streampunk phanse i see
This isn’t just your regular old cheesy steampunk though, it’s actually an extremely intricate, well thought out and researched, cohesive and creative take on the visual genre - probably the best one in my opinion. I don’t think you need to be a steampunk fan to appreciate this world, any fan of good world-building and aesthetics would enjoy it. I find it extremely bizarre that, for someone who consumes a lot of media, he didn’t even think it was decent. Truly one of those things which I think is objectively good, if not exceptional and a masterclass in world-building. Schafrillas is quite baffling to me sometimes to be honest.

Everyone always talks about how much of an underrated classic Treasure Planet was, but rarely mention Atlantis. Atlantis was one of the first mainstream films to use a “dieselpunk” aesthetic, and was one of the best 2D/3D Disney films visually. Plus, the fact that the story is so mature, kinda feeds into what I call “The Iron Giant” problem, where the movie is too adult and ambitious with its story telling and messages, as well as being quite off brand than what people are used too, that the marketing department just doesn’t know what to do with it. I mean, even as a kid, that whole ending part with Rourke kinda messed me up
Atlantis was an experiment: Disney wanted to see if they could make an animated movie aimed at an older audience. It was intentionally darker and more ambitious than most of the others film, but because of this it didn't had an audience: many children were scared by it, the intended audience ignored it because they thought it was another kids cartoon with funny characters and catchy songs and Shrek and Tomb Raider wrecked it at the box office, attracting respectively the kids and the intended audience, leading to his obscurity.
Man as a kid I loved that they went so hard with how they killed Rourke. XD I loved dark stuff like that. And I still feel pretty much the same now haha

The scene in Lilo and Stitch after the fight and Mr. Bubbles is taking Lilo away, with Nani pleading, and Bubbles yelling, "Is this what she needs??" Literally gives me chills everytime
As a general rule I don't like Steampunk or Sci-fi. Treasure Planet is the exception. It did it so perfectly, it is a lot more victorian pirate than sci-fi and it handled it beautifully.

Tiana was so focused on her dream that she lost sight of whats truly important, and that the people you share your dream with. She learns that its okay to slow down enjoy yourself, and take comfort in the people around you. This also ties into Naveen, who only enjoys himself, and needs to learn to work for those moments to mean anything.
I have never watched a youtube video about the movies I grew up with as a kid so I was not prepared for how unnecessarily angry hearing you rip them apart would make me
Yeah I suddenly realised that I watched most of these when they came out as a kid and a lot of the "loved it as a kid but it's pretty shit" and "thought it was ok but realise it's a masterpiece now" stuff is exactly how I felt. Maybe it's just a kid thing that some themes and stories don't seem as good to kids but hit harder as adults
If we are talking about disney 2000s movies from our childhood being talked about by tamatao i must give my two cents He was surprisingly nice towards home on the range
Putting treasure planet so low actually physically hurt me because I absolutely loved the movie as a kid and even now. I thought the movie was so ambitious and visually amazing, and I loved the idea of mixing the traditional old novel with futuristic space. I also felt really attached to Jim and was very surprised by the amazing arc John silver went through
I didn't get Schaff's point about Doppler and Amelia at all, both are major characters that drive the plot, especially Doppler. I was like, how does the movie "not use them at all"? Also their romance was sweet and well-developed. It felt like we had watched two separate films.
Fun fact about Atlantis's art style: the production designer was Mike Mignola, a comic artist and writer and creator of Hellboy, hence why it looks so comic-booky.
I’ll never forget when Disney made a post about Chicken Little on their social media pages, and everyone bashed Buck Cluck. That was a highlight of 2020
@@IcyDiamond Reminds me of my dad (who is actually even worse, never having reformed but as the 2010s ended, he just chose to be even worse than ever).
@Don't Take Life Seriously To me it is the other way around. Atlantis always felt for me like a Star Gate Ripp off and I don't really like the main characters in it. To me the movie has no heart. But Treasure Planet has a heart. I admit that the designs in Atlantis are just amazing, but that doesn't make up for its various flaws.
A lot of people say that Princess and the Frog is based on the old fairy tale of the frog prince, but it's loosely based on a book that's in turn loosely inspired by that story that's called the Frog Princess. In the original book the titular princess turned into a frog because a bracelet her aunt gave her to keep her from getting cursed had an unforeseen reaction with the curse that was on the prince (it was enchanted to turn any magic she got involved with back on the caster). And you're right, Charlotte and her father don't have any equivalents in the book, they probably were added for the reason you think.
*Fun Fact:* Originally, Chicken Little was going to be a coming-of-age story with the protagonist being a girl. No aliens included. This is the story about a small yellow chick who suffered from paranoia which caused several panic outbreaks in her hometown. Not only becomes a freak to the town, but also upsets her father who wanted her to improve as a better person (and have the mother being alive as well). In order to give confidence, she was sent to a summer school called Camp-Yes-You-Can where she met her friends like in the final product but with Ugly Duckling being a boy. The sheep who ran the camp turned out to be wolves in disguise who were planning to eat all the students. Now, it is up to Chicken Little to confront her fears and save the day. The scrapped version of Chicken Little could've been great in the final product but too bad Disney can't accept that.
And I heard that they made Chicken little instead of My peoples/a few good ghosts/once in a blue moon/Elgin's peoples/Angel and her no good sister ( this unfinished project had multiple names, but ended up having none of them ).
I didn’t catch on as a kid, but now I understand why Lilo finds it so important to feed Pudge the fish. Lilo says Pudge controls the weather so she feeds him to keep him happy. Her parents died in an accident because of the stormy weather. She feeds Pudge so nobody else gets hurt because of the weather
In the original story idea the fish was even more important. Stitch killed Pudge because he was programmed to be a killing machine and when Lilo got sad he realized the importance of lives, that was the part where he understood the consequences of his actions and tried to change. But it was cut out for understandable reasons, they didn't want to portray Stitch as that bad because while olders would understand it kids would misunderstand it and hate him.
I don't care what anyone says, Bolt is a charming movie that warms my cold heart. There's a song with the lyrics "I may not see in color, but I sure can feel blue". C'mon. I say "You're my good boy" to my cat all the time now.
@@AquaTeenHungerForceIsGoated it isn't a masterpiece, but is better than what Shaffrillas said, but I don't think it is by a lage margin though. But anyways: it's good.
So.... we’re just not gonna talk about how Disney purposefully destroyed any chance Treasure Planet had at success just to make the writers sit down and obey (for lack of a better word)
Would all of you just get over it and stop complaining? It's not the end of the world. So what if it was a flop at the box office? Loads of people love it, and that should be more important than how much money it made. Besides, isn't a late release better than no release at all? And why do you people keep using the word "Disney?" When you say that, you're literally talking about God knows how many people working there. Do you honestly think every Disney worker sabotaged it? If so, that's a stupid and incorrect thought. It was only the people in charge who made it come out when it did. My point is: It was nearly 20 years ago, and it wasn't a crime against humanity. So let it go.
I never liked the whole "the dad's an idiot" trope that's been in every kids media since the 90s, but Chicken Little takes that to a whole new low by having the dad be the most unlikable character in a whole roster of unlikable characters.
You know that Lilo and Stitch is amazing when they basically use Stitch as their secondary mascot behind Mickey at the parks Holy Crap 1000 Likes Thank you so much!! That’s the most I’ve ever gotten

I think a fan's relationship with their father (especially a son's relationship) defines how each responds to Treasure Planet. That is why so many guys that grew up with that movie care about it so much because they see aspects of their own father-son relationship in it. I can recognize that it isn't overall as quality of a movie as many make it out to be, but it is personally meaningful to me and one of the few Disney movies of this era that really brings out deeper emotions from me, so I get why so many love it.
I think the tiana thing can be explained like this...she becomes a frog so that she is pulled into the same position as the Prince guy, suddenly two people from totally different worlds in so many ways are suddenly on the same level and in the same bad position and they both learn something from each other, tiana learns to not let her dreams consume her to the point where she blocks everyone out and she loses herself and the Prince guy learns that he doesn’t have to be so trapped in his ways by depending on others for his success and that some hard work can give him the life he wants. They Balance each other out, tiana starts as a workaholic to the point where she risks losing the whole point of her dream (that being family and interaction) and the Prince starts as a douch who always depends on others to guide him through life as he’s never rlly worked for anything but buy the end tiana learns that having fun and interacting with the same people she wants to bring together will help her achieve her goals ams the Prince takes on the responsibility of himself and his own dreams and even more so he learns that being able to help himself and help someone he loves is all he needs...the kissing thing still doesn’t make sense tho
when me and my mom were watching the movie, we actually did make some sense out of the whole “tiana kisses naveen and turns into a frog (somehow)” thing. basically, she was always taught about independence and having to work to earn things as a kid by her father, and handsome prince man who is now a frog comes to her one day and says that instead of putting in the extra effort, he can just buy her the restaurant she so desperately wants. so, she reluctantly agrees because it had been her lifelong goal for pretty much the entirety of her existence since her dad passed, kisses him, and boom, is now a frog! this didn’t make sense to most people as tiana is virtually the complete opposite of naveen: hard-working and independent, humble, etc, but when you think about it in a deeper sense, it kinda does. independence was one of the biggest values in her life, so just agreeing to let naveen buy the restaurant for her kinda contradicts the whole meaning of that. that isn’t to say she didn’t work hard, because she most certainly did, but yeah i guess her transforming into a frog did make a little sense
I always assumed she turned into a frog cuz it wasn't supposed to happen at that moment. almost like it backfired. Like, Naveen was supposed to kiss a princess. Tiana was not a princess until the end CUZ she *married* Naveen and fell in love with him. the beginning was just an ol' quick peck. I thought maybe it woulda happened to anyone he kissed.
while this all checks out story-wise, it's still missing the point. the point was mostly to question why this character arc couldn't have happened without turning the first black disney princess into a frog for the majority of her film, and additionally questioning why this means of character development is only chosen for characters who aren't white. the individual in-universe justification doesn't matter because it doesn't engage with the real-life implications of portraying people of color as animals, which is the whole reason it's being pointed out in the first place.
@@juiceecads3894 tbh…I see it as just a coincidence OR perhaps these characters on these types of stories usually go hand in hand with life lessons linked to kinda advanced topics or places in history. Tiana lives in New Orleans and aspires to be something more but is kept in place due to her background and ppls lack of expectations same for most characters similar to her. So turning that character into an animal is usually done to introduce entirely bigger and more drastic challenges but they’re acc easier to understand. Turning someone into an animal has always been done to not simplify the character but the surroundings, the settings and the struggles they’d face as a human and acc focussed in on the characters. Making their motivations more clear. Giving them a set goal (to become human again) of which by the end they learn the lessons needed to achieve what they’re original plan was before they became a creature. It’s a pretty simple story tool and used nearly everywhere just in different ways and I think since these movies are ultimately for kids it’s probably better that way. Besides without the whole issue of the movie the acc base story line would be bland or would have ended way sooner. At the start of the film she essentially works for and gets her goal but the door is shut in her face. Without that event to launch character progression the movie is done at the finish line. Plus, it’s based off princes on the frog so they kinda had the big thing right there in their faces.
18:25 IMO Tiana also turning into a frog was to put her and Naveene on a similar playing field. They both had very different childhoods and by turning them both into frogs, it forces them to confront their own flaws and help each other.
"What the fuck did Tiana do to deserve..." "What the fuck did Tiana do dode..." "What the fuck didtia..." "What the fuck didee..." "What the fuck did Tatiana..."
Tiana mainly changed because of her flaw: While she did have a dream she worked for, the dream was the ONLY thing she was living for. Don't get how Schaff missed it, but Tiana's flaw wasn't that all she needed was love, but that love was missing in her life. It was that she needed to learn to calm down and live sometimes, a direct opposition of Naveen who needed to learn to straighten up more often.
Eh I can respect his reasons. It's my favourite but hey, variety spice and all that. Plus Atlantis is in it's rightful place, and I don't even disagree that L&S is the *best* movie. All is good.
Treasure planet is one of my all time favorites, right up there with robots tied for my top animated movies of all time. I had a cat named morph bc he was such a slinky fella, that movie is just so beautifully whimsical, and has the dad figure making changes to be a better mentor, which I feel very closely to home with my own dad, it just is a beautiful movie that can jerk the tears even after watching it enough to rewrite the script word for word
It's worth noting that Naveen's character arc wasn't really that he was egotistical and needed to be brought down a peg (though it was a flaw of his), it was moreso that he was privileged and lazy, a total contrast to Tiana's fixation on her goal to the point of overworking herself. They're both opposite extremes (which makes total sense given their lives), and on their adventure they both have a positive impact on balancing each other out; Tiana teaches Naveen responsibility and gives him a good work ethic, while Naveen helps Tiana loosen up and appreciate the connections in her life. And then as Mama Odie said all they needed was love to be happy, it was literally all they needed to turn human. Not trying to defend the weird, overused trend of Disney turning most of their POC leads into animals (disproportionately to their many, many white movies anyway), just trying to defend The Princess and the Frog's great story and amazing lead characters. EDIT: I also feel like I should add that, since a lot of other people talking about this don't really regard the nuance here, Tiana turning into a frog doesn't mean she "deserved" it for any character flaw; if the movie saw her determination to get her restaurant as a bad thing, she wouldn't have still gotten it at the end. She's like the Pacha/Belle of the duo, the sympathetic hero who's forced into this situation by the jerk, but also learns a thing or two herself on the journey and her developing relationship with the other character. OTHER EDIT: Modified my statement about the animal thing because a lot of replies are either missing the point or taking it in bad faith. I never said it undermined the rest of the representation in the films themselves, it's more of a gross marketing issue from the disney higher ups.
How did they exactly bring the trend back with Soul, when half of the movie we got to see Joe, his friends, family, and coworkers in the human world? 99% of them are POC/non-white
But soul is from Pixar? I know Pixar is under Disney but Disney have no control over how Pixar makes their movies, not to mention the 50% of the movie involves Joe in his daily life with other POC characters All this is coming from a POC, but we all have our views and I completely respect yours and do agree to your opinion to some degree
@@sunhopii8534 Yeah, I mean I'm in no right to really say anything more about the topic than what I've heard from other POC who've been bothered by it. The real issue is that when there's been little representation by Disney overall, it's a little sus that most of them can't keep their POC leads as they are for most of the film (whether or not it's also been done in a few of their many, many white movies), and Disney (the corporation) absolutely has control over that in their animated movies, Pixar included. I personally think the real solution is to make more POC led movies than just the few that take part in the trope, but that wasn't the point of my original comment
@@jodran5228 well if anything, it’s really dumb to talk about this “trend” with soul because that was a beautiful plot device and metaphor that was really needed In The story
For the Tiana thing, she needed her to relax. She was so focused on everything else without accepting a lot of help from everyone else. She needed to learn that she was not on her own, and to be happy about the little things and what else is important, not to waste her life working. I dont know why but it clicked for me. I think its one of the best animated 2d films they ever made, with rolling down the byou and the madegra being great. All the songs I liked and Ray was better for me. I am glad they did not do a fake out death here and Tiana is my favorite Disney princess.
Thank you! People miss the point. The movie wasn't criticizing Tiana's work ethic, it was criticizing Tiana's tunnel vision in reaching her goals that she doesn't slow down to enjoy the little things in life, which are just as important. Both this movie and Soul handle this very well. Tiana is my favorite princess not only because I relate to her, but also because I too sometimes forget to enjoy the little things in life.
Yesssss. It's RELEVANT, especially with young women of color being forced to "prove" themselves in this world. We don't always need to be workaholics to reach our goals. There is time for work AND love, family, happiness. Ambition AND relaxation. ^^
Originally, 'Bolt' (then 'American Dog') was something much more serious, but then Disney started to meddle with the film and eventually creator (!Chris Sanders!) just left the project (or was removed, doesn't matter), because it's no use to argue with Disney.
The 2000s may not have been the best decade for Disney, but it's probably my favorite decade from them. I like the way they experimented in their animated movies and it's honestly more enjoyable to watch than the Renaissance or the 2010s.
Bolt is still one of my favorite Disney films though. Reminded me of The Truman Show (1998) in a way. And yes, I loved the message about finding yourself.
I don't hate John Travolta, but I think Adam West would have delivered his lines a bit too powerful for an animated movie, especially one made in the 2000s. But besides that, it's never been one of my favorite Disney movies, and I could say it was on par with the mediocre Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (Last Jedi excluded, because it is the worst movie Disney has ever made).
Actually it would have just been better if they used Chris Sanders original 'american dog' concept, which being rejected by Disney was the reason he left for DreamWorks.
18:36 Tiana actually had a "reason" for becoming a frog, and in fact it was that she "worked" too hard and was very obsessed with the "working" part of making a dream come true. Through the journey, and also through what Mama Odie wanted to point out to her (but she didn't understand), she learns not to be so obsessed with hard work and listening to her own self (digging a little deeper hehe), because everything she needed and what was more important she already had: love (as she states for Dr. Facilier). That was the point of her turning into a frog.
My mother used to work as a social worker and she absolutely refuses to watch Lilo & stitch solely because of the sister plot line. Apparently the uncomfortable authenticity is also present in how the social worker handled the situation throughout the movie. Apparently the catharsis and feeling of justice when a minor is rescued from someone who is maliciously neglectful or otherwise dangerous, is dwarfed by the feeling of absolute heartbreak and dread when a child needs to be taken from someone who genuinely tried their best but simply couldn't cut it.
Treasure Planet is the only Disney movie where the main character was abandoned by one of his parents, which is honestly way more relatable than having dead parents. I wish Disney, or even Pixar, revisits this idea in the future. Also, give us more father figures in animated movies, they are great.
That was really the main thing i think i disagred with schaff on really any of his lists while raymond is a bit naratively goofy I think theirs just something geunine about the way he acts and his sacrafice at the end of the movie actaully makes me sad. I think you get rid of him you lose too much of the heart of the film
Princess and the Frog is my favorite princess movie, so hearing what he said about it hurt in general. But the thing about Raymond? That hurt the worst 😔
As someone who is native American and an animation major, I might be a little biased but I loved Brother Bear as a kid and even now. But I do agree with most of your points. While the animation is beautiful and the beginning is good, the fact of it being a kids film causes it to fumble a bit. I think as a kid, I was just so happy to see "good" representation that didn't sexualize or demonize the natives
Way better than Pocahontas with a literal song called “Savages” :) and a depiction of the real world awful relationship between John and Pocahontas :) which is For Some Reason played completely straight and not like the atrocities they deserve to be remembered for :)))))

Louis the alligator is one of my favorite characters under the "They have a dream and they get it but they're a side character." trope. Naveen has one of my favorites arcs in a disney movie simply because it handles it well and gives it time. Tiana is so amazing to watch and I always feel like I want her to succeed. For me personally, easy 10/10
I wish when you talked about treasure planet you would have mentioned the fact that Jims father just straight up abandoned Jim and Jims mom and that was killing Jim inside. I'm so glad they didnt make any redemption for the father, like that he was doing it to protect his family or he was taken or something. He just was an awful parent and I think thats something we don't see a lot in childrens movies. It propably resonated with a lot of kids that felt abandoned by their distant fathers.
Ikr he mentioned the other storyline from other movies and how real and serious they are but treasure planet also brings up something serious. It does have some comedy in the writting but I've always felt it was way less than other Disney movies cause its not really for young kids, more for an older audience. I think treasure planet has a beauty in its soundtrack, world building, aesthetic, characters and just the tone and vast universe that no other movie has. It is just so pretty and important to me ❤️
Yes, Dr. Facilier’s death was very dark, even for Disney. In fact, Dr. Facilier’s death was one of the darkest ones in my opinion. Dr. Facilier’s was a great villain, and I like to watch the movie just to see Dr. Facilier. Dr. Facilier is one of my favorite Disney villains. Dr. Facilier
Also to point out that when the frog character broke the amulet thing, he wasn't reaching for her he went straight for the amulet and you could see how he was absolutely terrified
Actually, outside of the WDAS films of the mid-2000s (I think we know what they are), the Experimental Era is lowkey a continuation of the Disney Renaissance Era (though I could understand why it’s highkey considered the Second Dark Age, because while most of its movies like Fantasia 2000, The Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis, Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Meet the Robinsons and even Bolt are successes in terms of their quality, only a few films of the era were successes at the box office like Dinosaur, Lilo and Stitch, Brother Bear despite its low-ass budget, Chicken Little and Bolt to a bare extent).
I remember watching Meet the Robinsons as a kid and whenever I remembered it I was pretty sure it was a fever dream. Now you’ve reminded me it was a actual thing.
I guess I always liked princess and the frog more than most. Mostly because of how fun the characters are. Tiana is a great protagonist and Facilier is pretty badass.
I feel the same. It would've been in my top 3 but I understood most of the criticisms in this video. but The Princess & the Frog is definitely my comfort Disney movie.
Seeing how others reacted to his review, I think it's safe to say that his review seems less an objective criticism of a movie with possible racial undertones, and more a use of sensationalism to hide his indifference of a beloved movie that appeals to an underrepresented demographic.
Sora was more supportive of Chicken Little than his dad ever was, even though he had never met him before summoning him for the first time. Let that sink in for a moment.
Alright, Princess and the Frog appreciator here, Tianna's character arc is learning that she should appreciate the world around her, since she doesn't focus on anything but overworking herself for the restaurant. Becoming a frog let her relax from her work and broaden her horizons to the world outside of her dreams
Yeah.. that kind of parallels pixar's recent movie " soul ". The point was to take a moment to enjoy life because you only have one. Tiana literally drilled one goal in her head and never did anything else. Even her own mother was a bit concerned. She also learns to get some needed help as she was only working by herself up until naveen helps her out. I'd like to believe that he really helped *fasten* the process of achieving her dream. At her pace she would be an old lady before she reaches her goals.

They released a summer movie in the winter. Treasure Planet was too expensive to make and Disney needed a reason to never make a movie like it again.
It wasn't a dumb move. They purposefully wanted to kill their 2D animation studios.
*Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets!
Sorry, I had to as a Harry Potter fanboy
Plus, next to Kuzco and Flynn Rider, Naveen is the best Disney prince and has the best character arc ever.

Damn Disney, you need some ice for that burn?
18:35 To be fair, I haven't seen the film in a while, but I think the lesson Tiana was supposed to learn was to not focus on achieving her dream to the unhealthy degree she displayed at the beginning of the movie. She was working so hard to raise the money, that she was:
- Staying up late to the point of only getting seconds of sleep each morning (displayed during the time skip where she entered her room in her maid uniform and then had to get ready to work at the diner)
- Constantly choosing work over hanging out with her friends (shown during her conversation with said friends)
- Having to be convinced by Charlette (Tiana's closest and best friend) to take time off work and go to her ball, and even then Charlette had to give her a huge tip to make up for the money Tiana could potentially lose by not working.

NANI?!??!
OH NO
O U C H
Holy moly I never knew that! That would make the film like, a million times better. Explains so many things and also so RELEVANT!
As an islander, I really wish they didn't cut that scene out. It would have made the movie so much more impactful (not that it already isn't of course)
sounds like a racist thing and glad they cut it.
I wish they kept the scene. Maybe it'd would've changed even a little bit how bad the economy and how the natives ate being treated now.
there was also another deleted scene that further explored how traumatized she was by her parents' death. basically, stitch fucks up by slapping away a fish (i believe to be the same fish she feeds sandwiches) and laughing when the fish gets eaten by seagulls, and lilo gets really mad at him and says "you must never let your family die!".
this sentence means that lilo feels responsible for her parents' death bc she believes the fish she feeds sandwiches controls weather, and her parents died in a car accident caused by heavy rain. she must've forgotten to feed him that day, which made her believe he was upset and therefore made it.
this movie could've gone so much harder, damn.

Thats Not The Only Thing Thats Fantstic About The Animation The Background Are FREAKING BIG AND STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!
High way to hell
Oh damn. The more you know
There's actually a deleted segment of Lilo and Stitch that I think was a real shame to be omitted.
Tourist: takes a picture of Lilo.
Lilo: takes a picture of tourist.
Tourist: ...
Lilo: You're beautiful.
wow that's really interesting, I didn't know that
It also would've gone hand in hand with Nani's job at the luau.
Taking a picture of an American girl isnt racism. What? Lol

Meet the Robinsons really is pretty good ngl.
Agreed and it has an excellent message. It’s good
Yeah besides having a amazing message, it has an incredible villain as well
@@rjcorreia3788 really, one of my only problems is that it's paced kind of weirdly, especially in the big final battle, but aside from that it's solid. For me Treasure Planet is the peak of creativity. Taking an already existing story, a pirate story and puting it into space, but completely rewrite the laws of space, plus adding alien characters, sailships, with solar sails flying in the sky, and putting all of this into a steampunk setting is just brilliant.
Creativity comes from more than just visual concepts
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 And they did do that!! The visual concepts play into the story as well, from creating a whole new world to making a more modern story to fit the more modern aesthetic (at least, more modern than plain old Ye Olde England.) I like how there aren't really villains in Lilo and Stitch. They're just obstacles. Each of the antagonists, like agent Bubbles and the galactic space federation are just trying to do their job and want to seek the best for either Lilo or for the safety of the world. In the end, the villains just get a new perspective on Stitch and find to accept him as a part of Lilo's family

I mean, even as a kid, that whole ending part with Rourke kinda messed me up
You just summed up my opinion about the movie.
Rewatching the movie as an adult, I certainly have more appreciation and admiration for it.
Atlantis was the opposite for me, watching it as an adult it felt like a mess with massive pacing problems and no heart.

Her parents died in an accident because of the stormy weather. She feeds Pudge so nobody else gets hurt because of the weather
Not me crying in bed rn
The day she didnt feed the pudge was when her parents died
In the original story idea the fish was even more important. Stitch killed Pudge because he was programmed to be a killing machine and when Lilo got sad he realized the importance of lives, that was the part where he understood the consequences of his actions and tried to change. But it was cut out for understandable reasons, they didn't want to portray Stitch as that bad because while olders would understand it kids would misunderstand it and hate him.

They Balance each other out, tiana starts as a workaholic to the point where she risks losing the whole point of her dream (that being family and interaction) and the Prince starts as a douch who always depends on others to guide him through life as he’s never rlly worked for anything but buy the end tiana learns that having fun and interacting with the same people she wants to bring together will help her achieve her goals ams the Prince takes on the responsibility of himself and his own dreams and even more so he learns that being able to help himself and help someone he loves is all he needs...the kissing thing still doesn’t make sense tho
the character development was top tier in princess and the frog
when me and my mom were watching the movie, we actually did make some sense out of the whole “tiana kisses naveen and turns into a frog (somehow)” thing. basically, she was always taught about independence and having to work to earn things as a kid by her father, and handsome prince man who is now a frog comes to her one day and says that instead of putting in the extra effort, he can just buy her the restaurant she so desperately wants. so, she reluctantly agrees because it had been her lifelong goal for pretty much the entirety of her existence since her dad passed, kisses him, and boom, is now a frog! this didn’t make sense to most people as tiana is virtually the complete opposite of naveen: hard-working and independent, humble, etc, but when you think about it in a deeper sense, it kinda does. independence was one of the biggest values in her life, so just agreeing to let naveen buy the restaurant for her kinda contradicts the whole meaning of that. that isn’t to say she didn’t work hard, because she most certainly did, but yeah i guess her transforming into a frog did make a little sense
18:25
IMO Tiana also turning into a frog was to put her and Naveene on a similar playing field. They both had very different childhoods and by turning them both into frogs, it forces them to confront their own flaws and help each other.

@@PandaSafadopudim I hate Atlantis but love Treasure Planet..
@@pedropradacarciofi2517 I swear bro when the narrator kept on mentioning that, it honestly annoyed the hell outta me.
How did they exactly bring the trend back with Soul, when half of the movie we got to see Joe, his friends, family, and coworkers in the human world? 99% of them are POC/non-white
But soul is from Pixar? I know Pixar is under Disney but Disney have no control over how Pixar makes their movies, not to mention the 50% of the movie involves Joe in his daily life with other POC characters
All this is coming from a POC, but we all have our views and I completely respect yours and do agree to your opinion to some degree

I don't understand why most people I see on yt hate this movie so much. Well maybe not hate but I guess don't understand it? Idk
Now that I think about it, I wish "Bolt" was made like "The Truman Show"
and Toy Story people compare Buzz and Bolt and Mittens to Woody all the time
I see the connection now, that's kinda interesting
And rhino???
Originally, 'Bolt' (then 'American Dog') was something much more serious, but then Disney started to meddle with the film and eventually creator (!Chris Sanders!) just left the project (or was removed, doesn't matter), because it's no use to argue with Disney.
The 2000s may not have been the best decade for Disney, but it's probably my favorite decade from them. I like the way they experimented in their animated movies and it's honestly more enjoyable to watch than the Renaissance or the 2010s.
this is why I think the disney parks were best under eisner.
Bolt is my childhood. It makes no sense and I knew it wouldn't be in the top anything on this list but I just love it.
that’s how i feel about brother bear lol. like objectively it’s Not Great but it was one of my biggest comfort movies as a kid
Honestly I think Bolt is fine. It’s wholesome and sweet. I think he trashed on it just a little too much
Bolt has obvious faults, but it's setting and timeframe are so nostalgic for me.
I feel that. I wish he would’ve said something about the song “barking at the moon” I love that song so much and feels so right in this movie
"THIS IS WHY KIDS SHOULDNT HAVE AN OPINION" shcarfillas
Okay, raise your hand if you have genuinely forgotten more than once that Bolt is a Disney film
*proceeds to raise hand*
It was one of my favorites as a kid too. Completely forget about it until i found the video game in my old Xbox 360 collection.
I only know because miles Cyrus voices the girl and miley is THE Disney star
I forgot it existed
✋
The concept of Adam West playing Bolt would actually have made the movie about 13x better, thank you for this absolute wisdom
Bolt is still one of my favorite Disney films though. Reminded me of The Truman Show (1998) in a way.
And yes, I loved the message about finding yourself.
I do think it would've been funnier but I'm not sure if people would've taken the emotional parts as seriously if Bolt had Adam West's voice
If only he were still with us
18:36 Tiana actually had a "reason" for becoming a frog, and in fact it was that she "worked" too hard and was very obsessed with the "working" part of making a dream come true.

Princess and the Frog is my favorite princess movie, so hearing what he said about it hurt in general. But the thing about Raymond? That hurt the worst 😔
He married a star.

As someone who is also native american, I also agree. Sometimes it can be sad or drama, but again, it’s actually nice!

Why tf would Disney, a corporation whose goal is to make as much money as possible, WANT any of their movies to fail?
Princess and the Frog will always be my favorite princess disney movie and one of my favorite movies of all time. I am so endeared to all of the characters.
It is just so pretty and important to me ❤️
The voodoo man's death is one of the darkest deaths in any Disney movie, he gets his soul eaten, and his body thrown into the freaking shadow realm.
Dr. Facilier

@@captainfordo8013 It’s my favorite, but I think Emperor’s New Groove is a very, very close second.
