i’m still skeptical of Bannon… fun fact: it was Reagan who started taxing social security back in 1983. my 89yo dad bitches about it every time the topic comes up. of all the things, this one is particularly galling
Reagan turned the country from a wage-earner economy to a shareholder economy. And now the rich's wealth is on an upward exponential while median wages are actually falling.
It's high time we stopped looking back at Reagan as a conservative icon. He was a neoliberal who granted amnesty to millions of illegals, signed into law no-fault divorce for the first time in American history as CA governor, closed the asylums and put mentally ill on the streets, among other policies of questionable conservative value or even interest to the nation.
No doubt the interviewer has had to face down some of the economic horrors which threaten many Americans. It's wonderful that he's come through his rotten breaks with such spiritedness.
“What Trump’s gonna do is just declare victory. Right? He’s gonna declare victory. But that doesn’t mean he’s a winner,” Bannon, laughing, told the group, according to the audio. “He’s just gonna say he’s a winner.” In the meeting Bannon said Democratic supporters were more likely than Republicans to vote by mail, meaning their votes would be counted and reported later. That would lead to a public perception that Trump was winning the election, according to the audio. Democrats would “have a natural disadvantage”, Bannon said. “And Trump’s going to take advantage of it. That’s our strategy. He’s gonna declare himself a winner.” “So when you wake up Wednesday morning, it’s going to be a firestorm,” Bannon said. “You’re going to have antifa, crazy. The media, crazy. The courts are crazy. I suggest watching his two appearances on Timcast IRL a year or so ago, if you want to get what he’s about. I don’t agree with many of his takes, but he’s a smart guy.
If you can ever find enough Americans to pick up the slack. Maybe Trump will raise the retirement age to 73 and we can put those people back to work? Or maybe those pesky child labor laws can go away, so your twelve-year-old can start picking the damn beans? Maybe you grab those disabled workers, bent from their years of labor already - so lazy for them to eat out of the hand of the government while physically unable to give back, wouldn't you say? The reason so many illegals come here for work is that we're so damn desperate for labor that Americans will not, or can not, do. Democrats advocated for more judges to process asylum claims - Trump shot it down for politically motivated reasons. So many of the other illegals are here on overstayed work visas - came here legally to work, and overstayed because the opportunity didn't go anywhere (we still needed their labor). A path to citizenship would let us raise up the MANY good, hard-working immigrants (even if they're here illegally) from the layabouts and criminals the right sees around every shadowed corner. But apparently, that's too much work for the populist right. Better to take the easy, self-destructive route - spiking prices on every US-grown crop and livestock, and spending billions and billions on deporting our labor so that you feel better while people that are actually struggling shoulder the burden.
Why is everyone assuming populism is a bad thing. There are pitfalls, but putting commoners back in control is the idea populism strives for, even if sometimes it misses the mark.
Probably because each "side" is looking at the populist on the other side when they say that. Right wingers see communism. Left wingers see libertarians. They both hate corporatism, but their vision of what fixes it varies wildly. And when someone like Bannon preaches generic hoo-rah speech like this without details on how to fix it, it appeals to both. I guarantee he'd piss off half of the populists if he got into detail. That's why they never do. The "activist" portion is easy. Actually addressing the issues isn't. Don't believe me? Ask two opposite populists how to fix healthcare. One will say free market. The other will say socialism.
Depends on the type of populism. Bannon had some greart ideas but saying the Uni's are accepting international students only because of money is laughable. He said there are no hispanic or Blacks in Silicon valley because of this. NOTHING to do with marks..right haha Cmon Steve
One of Bannon's greatest claims to fame is his baseless attack on election integrity. He was responsible for Donald Trump declaring victory in 2020, even when he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he lost. (The Guardian; "Steve Bannon audio reveals Trump planned to claim early victory") That lie continues to poison the right's view of American politics, rendering most of them unable to accept the results of an election unless their guy wins. (Pew Research, "Voters Broadly Positive About How Elections Were Conducted, in Sharp Contrast to 2020") This is not the only American institution that Bannon rails against; he is a snake in Trump's ear, and the mastermind behind many of his WORST authoritarian impulses.
They’re being told it is evil and leads to nazis. And they don’t take a moment to question it, or take an honest look around. To do that would require them questioning their own ideology, and asking if they’re the baddies. Which of course they can never do.
Mr. Bannon, the distinction isn’t the French Revolution vs. capitalism, as you put it. It’s the French Revolution vs the American Revolution and the American Revolution wasn’t about financial freedom, however important it is to a free society. Mr Bannon read Os Guinness’s The Magna Carta of Humanity.
Intellectual capital is a powerful tool, and students from the East are leveraging it to benefit and empower their own states. This intellectual prowess is increasingly being weaponized against the West, which provides the very institutional platforms such as Ivy League universities that enable their advancement. The same holds true in the UK, where academia has been compromised by money and harmful ideologies that have infiltrated policymaking. Steve Bannon is right: education and employment opportunities should be prioritized for US citizens. The domestic talent pool is vast and capable, offering ample potential to cultivate “homegrown gems” rather than outsourcing opportunities to individuals whose loyalties may align with competing national interests.
Well, Bannon isn't exactly a peaceful angel. And I remember it when America was great without populist nationalism and without violent revolution. It is called America as it used to be.
Bannon is such an enigma. Smart, often charming, yet totally out of his fucking mind 😂 Like when he was trying to start that school in the ruins of a building in Italy.

Ever since the Boomers entered the labor market the GINI coefficient has been moving in the wrong direction. We have never had the income equality of Denmark, but we are now the most unequal country in the Western world. Wages have been stagnant since 1979, while the stock market has gone from 50 to over 44,000. The Populist movement is a real response to a real problem. Working Americans are the vast majority of voters. If we stop dividing ourselves over wedge issues, we can easily reform the tax code.
We need high corporate taxes, progressive capital gains taxes, maybe even progressive unrealized capital gains taxes, and huge corporate taxes on all profits not paid out as wages (basically a big multiplier on payroll deduction). And ban corporate ownership of homes.
@disposabull And people can't afford those things. Why? Because of income inequality. Rent seeking has gobbled up most of the economies of western countries.
I think it was his intention to be gotcha but hes not experienced enough to doit to someone like this and then he heard what he was saying and realized he agrees on most things
In the same breath he talks about avoiding oligarchy and how the richest man in the world saved their campaign. Yeah idk I think if we wanted to avoid oligarchy our only real option was Bernie and that ship has sailed. Trump and his cabinet full of billionaires will be the new oligarchy, they are simply replacing the old ones and the middle class will suffer. It's also interesting that Bannon brought up the rage over healthcare, but then didn't mention any solution. That's because Trump had 4 years to repeal Obamacare and didn't even try to do it.
But what was the alternative? If he does something about the serious issues I will take it when we currently have the same thing but with people who hate us and actively try to hurt us poors
Many more billionaires endorsed and funded the Dems than the Republicans. Dem policies generally harmed those they claim to care about most and also, during COVID especially, redistributed wealth from the poor to the rich.
