  • We went to the Mormon cannery to purchase some staple foods. We ended up with a 1 year's supply for 1 person to compliment our current food storage. I included a link below that shows what they recommend for 1 year 1 person supply. I also put a link below so you can order this online if you don't have a cannery near you.

I've been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS / Mormon) my entire life. And therefore provident living principles have been insulted in me throughout my life. So I guess it's fair to say that I've been a "prepper" now for almost 65 years. Great video by the way. I appreciate you.

I have been a customer for some time and have stocked away a supply of various foods that came in handy during the shortages of late. Baking supplies and pasta flew off the shelf quickly at our grocery stores but with our stock, we were able to continue enjoying home Cooked meals and help out our children who didn't have the resources. The people at the cannery are the most awesome you will ever meet and as was stated in the video, you can order on line with a minimal shipping cost.

My father was a High Priest in the Mormon church in American Samoa which is where he was originally from and many of my other family members from that side of the family are Mormons as well. I myself am not a Mormon as I wasn't raised by my father. I must say that my father was a very good man and very blessed and in all my life most of the Mormon people I have met are very good God loving people.

I never considered them selling it online, so I kind of wrote that resource off last time I heard of it. Just looked it up and most of their prices that are more online are still cheaper than the cheapest place I have found for long term food. Then checked and found out I have one just 75 miles from me.
lol Sometimes it just helps to hear an idea again to recheck it out. Thanks for the video.

  • @privateprivate8366
    @privateprivate8366 3 года назад +13

Yes, I discovered them last summer and made a few trips to pick up random items. Some items they were out of stock for a couple of months and one guy came in and bought $3K worth of food so, that caused them to be further out of stock.
    Some things to note:
They have sales on certain items. But, those sale sheets are made up a year ahead. In other words, having a sale has nothing to do with what they’ll actually have in stock and that they were, indeed, affected by last year’s food shortages.
You can order by the case to have them delivered. But, sometimes, if they’re out of stock online, and they often were, you’d be best to get to the closest location, but call ahead. Getting things delivered means 6 to a case of a singular item. If you go in person, you can mix and match. If you’re trying to maintain OpSec, then you’re best off going in person. Because, if you receive a delivery and you’re trying to keep your neighbors out of your business, sorry, but the boxes will appear as they do in this video, outlining the contents. Canned items generally last up to 30 years, unopened. Other items, that come in bags, last maybe 2 years and you might want to vacuum seal them, once you get them home.
I haven’t done the financial and nutritional math. But, my impression is that what they offer will not only quickly round out items you buy elsewhere. But might give you better control over fat, salt and sugar, than many of the prepped long term storage meals you see out there, which a lot of us need over 50. You can always change flavors, with the abundance of spices available, to avoid good fatigue.
One of the great things is that, if you’re over 50 and you stock u on items that have a 25 to 30 year shelf life, if Armageddon doesn’t happen, you’ll have something socked away for retirement, that you’ve paid lower prices for, ahead of time.

Cutting trees, how to cook, do you have enough water stored, how to shower, where to sleep, bathroom ?etc. Also prep goodies, candy, choc chips etc. It helps morale. Good luck.

    My bread recipe:
1 heaping teaspoon granulated yeast. I buy it by the jar. It's less expensive than the envelopes.
    1..25 - 1 1/4 cups warm water . Pour in yeast
Let them sit together for 5 to 10 minutes. Stir
    Add 1/4 cup sugar. Stir
Add 3 1/4 cups flour. Here is where you add a little garlic, Adobo, parsley, salt, whatever you like. Mix
I use the dough hook on my Kitchen Aid Mixer, let it mix for a few minutes. Here you note whether you need more water or flour.
Let rise for, at least one hour.
    Place in buttered loaf pan
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. My oven is old and may be different than yours. Check the first few times, just in case our ovens are different.
I, also, use this as my pizza dough recipe.
This recipe may be tweaked to your own taste.

Thank you so much! I have made bread like this, but I am trying to make bread with only flour and water that will rise. I learned that sourdough bread is the answer because you use sourdough starter, which is made from flour and water which in turn, over time, eventually grows wild yeast. It just aint easy, that's for sure!

i buy from the Home Storage Centers (what they call the canneries now) all the time!
while i ike having big buckets of wheat, i do advise that you buy the #10 cans not the bags of wheat UNLESS you plan to start grinding your own wheat for flour soon- those bags may only be 25 pounds, but unlike the cans you cant move them one at a time if they get too heavy!

I stopped buying #10 cans. It’s just me and my husband, and we have spent the last 5 years experimenting with dehydrated and freeze dried foods, a lot of which came in the #10 cans.
    You have a couple options.
    1. Be prepared to eat that item until you’re sick of it, because once you open a #10, the timer begins, it begins to lose food value, and there’s A LOT of it there.
    2. Just be aware that when you open one of those huge cans, you’ll have to have the resources (aka power) to store whatever you don’t immediately use I. Mylar bags or something similar, or go back to option #1.
    3. Just open them all now, one at a time, Rebag them in Mylar bags in more reasonable and manageable amounts now, so it won’t be a problem later.
Because they’re so large I just don’t buy the #10 cans for us any more. It’s just too much and a LOT goes to waste that way.
I mean, say, for example, you open a can of beans. One person can eat a regular 15 ounce can of beans in a sitting no problem. But the next day and the next, you might want something else. Some variety.
That’s not gonna happen if you open a #10 can of beans. Yeah, they may be dehydrated, but the second you break that seal, moisture is getting in, and nutrients are getting out, so the sooner you prepare and consume them, the better.
If you have a larger group of people it’s great. But for 1-4 people, not so much.

If you have children or grandchildren you still might want to have a few #10 cans about just in case! Also be aware that serving sizes differ from what is suggested and what people actually eat so you should be aware that you might need more than you think! An actual serving is usually a cup but most people actually eat at least twice as much at typical meal! Just saying...

    • @canninggramma5846
      @canninggramma5846 2 года назад +6

Actually, once you open a #10 can, you can put the rest in glass quart jars and seal it shut with an inexpensive Food Saver Machine! It WILL keep a long time that way, plus you can open the jar and reseal several rines, as long as the canning lid is good! If not, get another lid! Hope this helps.

We used to be able to check out a #10 can sealer but that is no longer available and each empty can with lid was one dollar. I loved that because I could can "organic" powdered milk, wheat, rice, beans, apples and sugar. The government just can't leave churches & freedom alone. I guess gmo foods are better than nothing if you have no other choice. Now, I buy the few #10 can organic foods retail but must vacuum seal in Qt jars otherwise. It keeps well but if we have an earthquake a third of my food could well be destroyed. The people at the cannery are very pleasant to deal with.

When you are done canning put them back in the box they came in and squish some bubble wrap between the jars. If it is a "big one" that knocks your shelves over that won't help but the bubble wrap should cushion quite a but of shaking. A couple of screws to mount the rack to the wall and something (butchers twine or baling wire) in the front and you should be ok.

You can still buy bulk wheat (white or red) in 50 pound bags. The rest of the items must come pre-canned, done in a clean room environment.
You can thank Obama for that. He flew spur of the moment to SLC, requested a meeting with the leadership...and promptly threatened to yank the Church's tax-exempt status if adjustments weren't made to our food storage program. It's my understanding he was quite nasty about it.
I'm hoping that President Trump will undo that particular threat.
There are a few privately owned canners around. You still have to order cans, lids, O2 absorbers, etc., but it can be done...if you know where to look. There are places like Costco and bulk supply companies that sell supplies.

I guess this is going to depend on your situation. Personally I've got several nearby sources of water, and I know how to purify it. Food, fuel, and safety are all I need to be concerned with.

    • @troystutsman1400
      @troystutsman1400 5 лет назад +2

If you have any sources of water nearby there are numerous ways
and water purifiers on the market. (Sawyer and Berkey are a couple
      of the best ones).
There are special plastic containers that you can purchase which
allow you to store water in a bathtub but you need to have it filled
      prior to a power outage.
If you have your own well you can purchase pumps that will run off
      of solar power or batteries.
Also, you can get an old fashioned styled hand pump installed so you
      can pump water anytime...
None of these will interfere with your water pumps regular operation.
      I hope this helped some.
      Good luck and keep prepping.

The problem with some of your stuff like rice will be a problem if you don’t have any way to cook it. No electricity unless you have a lot of propane for a cookstove, rice is a poor choice.
