I truly appreciate seeing other people have the same reaction to Tommy’s situation that I did. As an older sibling myself, this episode hits very close to home and I can’t help but be upset on Joel’s behalf. I would be absolutely heartbroken if that were me and my sibling/s in that situation. Especially knowing that Joel also lost his life partner on his way to find his brother, the one person left (until Ellie) that he cares about in this world… and then being indirectly told that you don’t matter to them. Ouch

Interesting take on Tommy and Joel. Because we've been following Joel-who has been through hell-I understand why you are inclined to be harsh with Tommy's reaction and to give Joel a break. In the bedroom scene, Joel is not so kind to Ellie whose past he hardly bothers to learn. Joel puts a lot on himself that he thinks no one suffers as much as he. He's not completely alone, but only he can pull himself out of the hole he's in. Where Maria channels the death of her 3-year old son outward to help others, Joel buries his grief and shuts everyone out-if not for Tess's dying wish, he would have turned back to Boston QZ and carried on as before.
I think Joel and Tommy's relationship was never as close as that of Henry and Sam. From episode 1, the story Joel tells himself is that Tommy would be nowhere without him, and he had to keep him close to bail him out of trouble. He tells Ellie in another episode that Tommy convinced him to go to the Boston QZ where they met Tess. But we don't know the circumstances. Joel tells Ellie that Tommy is a 'joiner,' and he says that with a scoff. Tommy's story has been told to us from Joel's perspective.
Joel tells Ellie that Tommy joined the military. It was Joel's truck that had the military sticker, so maybe Joel also joined to keep an eye on him. Tommy joined the Fireflies knowing Joel disapproved. Could it be that Tommy's been trying to make his own way, but Joel openly frowns on Tommy's decisions when they diverge from his comfort zone? In the bar in this episode, Joel sees their misdeeds at the beginning of the outbreak as "things *he* did." Tommy corrects Joel and tells him he was just as responsible. Joel doesn't see that Tommy has agency.
In the bar, we see how Joel manipulates his brother into doing what he wants. The difference is now, we know that Joel is trying to do something that is for a greater good. But Joel initially tells Tommy he's transporting Ellie as a pure job. Tommy shakes his head in disappointment that his brother hasn't changed. Tommy tells him that there were other ways to survive than the raiding and hunting they did, but that neither of them were any good at the those ways. But Tommy is aiming for a better way to survive; to live. The last time Tommy saw his brother, Joel was the guy who did awful things to get by because he couldn't find a way out of his grief. That's probably the biggest difference between them: Tommy looks to building a future while Joel refuses to leave the past behind. Later at the stable, when Joel gives Ellie the choice, Tommy breaks into knowing smile. From Joel's confession the night before, he knows his brother is no longer the man he left behind after all, and he sees that his brother and this strange girl have a deep bond. The acting in this episode from *everyone* is just outstanding. Incredible show.

Deciding between right or wrong, especially in this case that is not confusing like episode 9, should not take so many words.
You know the person (let's say your friend) that deep inside is not a bad person, in a world like this I find the way to let him know that there is a safe place to live.
Here is not just a friend, is his brother (worse) and even worse, a brother that gave him work, saved him from jail many times apparently (Tommy said THIS TIME is not my fault) , in the first episode one can see all this.
Is that finally he can do something without Joel's help? Or he is resentful with him for the killing? How can anybody convince him? A grown man that was in the army?
Joel didn't go for a visit, is terrible outside , doesn't he know that? If Maria wants a husband, sorry comes with a brother that always was there for him.
I always thought my father in law was a SOB but my husband loved him was his dad, i never told him, stop seeing him or stop helping him if he needed the help. Here obviously Joel (and Tess if she was alive) does.
I just think is basic loyalty 101.

This show (and game) is so good - it tricks you because it's really a daddy-daughter/family/trust/getting-over-trauma story disguised as a zombie story. The argument where Ellie shoves Joel is lifted almost exactly from the game and is probably one of the most crucial scenes in the entire story - if that scene doesn't work, then the whole story between Ellie and Joel isn't believable and doesn't work, but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey knocked it out of the park for sure with simply amazing performances.

I thought it was messed up Tommy never contacted Joel. But until you explained it DAMN! it never hit me how messed up it truly was.Boy it makes it so much worse that Tommy not only was ok but actually found a refuge,a safe haven such a rare thing in a post apocalyptic world. He didn't even give a shit to let his brother and his girl (Tess) know.He literally went radio silent leaving Joel wondering and thinking the worst about his brothers fate. All why Joel and Tess are struggling under a brutal totalitarian regime (FEDRA) living in a ghetto doing horrible things like slinging drugs, other black market goods, etc just to get by. I don't care how much you and your brother/family don't see eye to eye that's just wrong, especially in a world like that. But than again I also see Tommy's side somewhat because going on a open radio line could of put the entire community at risk his wife and coming child. This show really does a hell of a job putting perspective in that gray area, nothing no decision is black or white! Again another really solid episode and like usual I very much enjoy you 2 and the opinions you have👍 Thanks so much 🙏

Maybe a radio became inaccessible after maria found him. Also, he has a new life with his new wife and community. He has to follow their rules of being radio silent. It's not as easy as just picking up the phone and say yo, Joel, I'm good bro. Sure it would have been nice for Tommy to find a way to tell his brother he is safe, but what he did is understandable. We don't know the circumstances to pass judgement in such circumstances in that world.

You judge Tommy but don't really listen. Of these two "bad" people, Tommy is the good one.
Interesting is the fact in episode 4 that the question Ellie asked in the car was only fully answered by Joel about his brother in the stairwell. Tommy always wanted to be a hero and do good. That's why he joined the Army at the age of 18, that's why he was on the road with Joel afterwards and later joined the Fireflys. Why did Joel have to get Tommy out of jail in episode 1? Because Tommy defended a woman who was attacked.
Joel told Ellie in the stairwell that he was on both sides with Tess and Tommy. So also on the bad. So Tommy didn't just leave Joel for the Fireflys because Marlene recruited him, but because nothing good came out of robbing and killing innocent people. Joel portrays Tommy all the time as if Tommy needs him. He wouldn't get along without him. In fact, Tommy knows exactly what he wants and where he can't find it. So the Army, Joel and the Fireflys also disappointed him. He didn't do any good with them either. Joel always says Tommy needs him. In fact, Joel seems to need him more than the other way around. Tommy wanted to be a hero and do good. Now in Jackson he can do good.
However, one rule was a strict ban on radio to the outside world to protect all 300 people who live there, including children. So in how far is it wrong what Tommy does?
That Joel feels responsible for him out of his completely shifted, negative view of the world is Joel's problem and not Tommy's. Because Joel's view doesn't have much to do with reality. He sees things as he needs them in order to continue living. 🙂

Tommy started a new family, as Joel suspects, to build a life different than the one Joel forced him into after the outbreak when they were hunters, preying on innocent people out of necessity, killing them and taking their stuff. In the game, Joel tells him that he survived because of him, and Tommy replies that it wasn't worth it. Maria's line at the dinner table about bad reputation was clearly aimed at Joel.

    • @analmf1210
      @analmf1210 11 месяцев назад

Yes, all the relationships and situations are different in the game and in the TV.
But in both, Joel forced him? A grown man that was in the army? In desert storm?
Besides even before the outbreak, Tommyy was surviving because of Joel.
Joel had a family, a daughter, she was a nice young lady so he was doing something right and had his own job, ergo the resentment built in Tommy. Oh Craig Mazin and Neill Druckmann were speaking of a resentment that Tommy felt, I understand it now.

Another grand slam, yeah? HBO hires nothing but the best. I'm so happy Sony didn't go the movie route with this like they did Uncharted. Uncharted was done by some of the same team that gave us the Last of Us and has a huge story too. And for whatever reason, Sony thought it'd be a great idea to make it a movie, cast Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Walberg as Victor Sullivan? They chose the wrong format and the wrong people to portray the main characters, and the movie suffered for it. The movie made over $400 million, so I guess it isn't a failure in terms of making money, but if you look at people in the gaming community, you'll find few that praised this movie--it missed the mark, by a lot! This series, however, didn't miss a thing! Every episode hits, and much of it is BETTER than it was in the game. Nearly everyone online gave HBO hell for the people they cast for this series, and nearly all of them shut the hell up after the first episode aired, lol. We are lucky to have Bella as Ellie, she's killing the role. I don't think anyone doubted Pedro, but any who did stopped that after the first episode too.
I'm not even worried about this series sticking the landing in the finale--they've got this!
I know this story; I know what's supposed to happen, but things aren't happening the same way they did in the game and I'm loving the surprises and changes. This cliffhanger is pretty similar to what happens in the game too, lol. We were kept in the dark for a while, not knowing which way the story was going to go, and this series is doing something different yet similar by showing us a preview about Ellie's FEDRA schooling past. I wouldn't be surprised if the story is structured like Bill and Frank's story, taking up the first 40 or so minutes of the episode before showing us where things stand now. We learned that FEDRA taught Ellie how to handle a gun and that they were teaching her how to be a soldier, but what exactly does she know? We haven't really seen much of anything since Joel wouldn't let her do much. I think we're going to find out that Ellie knows a lot more than we've been led to think, and I can't wait to see it.
We have three stories left and a lot of story left, I'm expecting long episodes to wrap this all up, and I cannot wait! Let's go!
