    The taping is for use during activity. It is not a substitute for a splint or brace designed for everyday wear. The adhesive of the tape will eventually cause chafing and skin breaks. The taping should be applied immediately before activity and taken off afterwards. Regarding how long you should continue to apply the taping, you should continue to use it until your thumb has normal range of motion and strength in all directions and no pain to stress the injured ligament.

      Good point. I've been using a similar tape job using kinesiology tape (hey, it was only a buck at the dollar store, otherwise there's nothing magical about the stuff). It helps prevent further strain during activities. I have unusually long orangutan thumbs and they were jammed many times in sports, and again in a car wreck. So after decades of cumulative damage it doesn't take much to re-injure the thumb joints.
      But later I switch to a simple neoprene and Velcro strap for routine use, mostly to remind me to avoid stress on the thumb for a few weeks.

    This helped me understand how to wrap an ace bandage. Managed to sprain it on a bike handle of all things and i just need to restrict my range of motion while it heals. Curse having tiny hands!

      You should ice it now. If you have a lack of motion or strength in it you should seek medical attention to determine the extent of the injury. Thumb injuries can be very persistent if not treated appropriately and a good diagnosis is essential for a good plan of care. You can obtain the tape for this taping at any sporting goods store once it is safe for you to resume activities.

    A good way to test if her capillary refill is normal is to perform the test on an adjacent finger or the contralateral thumb and compare the results to the involved thumb.

    I injured my thumb with a prop during dance, it's been twitching involuntarily and pain creeps up through my forearm if I extend it back. Would taping my thumb help with the pain and further injury ?

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  9 лет назад +1

      It could potentially be helpful, but you should have your injury evaluated to determine exactly what the injury is first.

    • @bkleineATC

      Provided your thumb is merely sprained (jammed), this is the tape job I would perform on one of my basketball players. I'd advise you to practice with it for a while as it will change your hand position when ball handling and shooting.

    If a player complains about their thumb being numb and hurting do you tape it or put icy hot on it?

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  9 лет назад +1

      Numbness can be an indicator of a condition involving a nerve or vascular structure. These type of injuries should be ruled out before they participate.

    Can you still grip with this thumb taping as I do Ju jitsu and have a pulled radial ligament

    • @bradkleine
      @bradkleine 9 лет назад

      Yes, you can. After about 15 minutes of use the tape will stretch a little and you'll have more thumb movement, but still have the ligament support. I use it with wrestlers often.

    I broke my thumb and require surgery now. I had my thumb taped (no previous injury, just precaution) during the incident and it was in the position like at 0:52 which my athletic trainer told me was fine.

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  10 лет назад

      Every athletic trainer is different in their philosophies about how treatments and tapings should be done. The important thing to remember about tapings is that they do not physically hold anything in place. They are proprioceptive cues that provide feedback via the sensory nerves in the skin when a joint gets moved too far out of position. I, personally, don't tape with a flat hand because I don't believe it is functional to sports. That being said, it is entirely possible that the fracture you sustained would have occurred regardless of the position of the taping depending on the mechanism of your injury. There is no conclusive evidence that tapings can contribute to the occurrence of an injury. I suppose it is theoretically possible that it could, but the goal of an athletic trainer to do their best to help their athletes by performing these treatments in the way they feel will best benefit their athletes.

      Yes, you could. Try to get the tape to lay as flat as you can so you dont give yourself a pressure sore from the tape.

    • @bkleineATC

      Use of rock tape or kinesio tape is a very different tape job and not tape is I'd advise using for the taping in this video. It is designed for using traditional athletic tape. There are some very good thumb taping utilizing those tapes and they are absolutely an option.

    can I use this for my trigger thumb?

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  7 лет назад

      I can be helpful. Inflammatory conditions such as trigger thumb often have better success using a compressive, elastic tape instead of the more rigid, inflexible athletic tape. This taping is to restrict particular motions vs. applying compression.

    • @Cinnamonplayz633
      @Cinnamonplayz633 7 лет назад +1

      +Brad Kleine thank you for repkying! What kind of elastic tape do you recommend?

    • @bkleineATC

      I've had mixed results with this tape job for catcher's thumb. I've done better with using a small, within-the-hand orthplast splint for that. The tape just doesn't end up being tough enough to withstand the force.

    Im a student trainer for football and towards the middle of the game he said that about his hand and hes a ride receiver so he had to go back in the game... so towards that point i shouldn't wrap him or

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  9 лет назад

      If he is complaining of numbness at that point, as a student, you should involve your ATC. Your athlete will probably be frustrated with you for not giving him the quick fix he wants, but if this is a new injury throwing some tape on it implies you have evaluated it, determined a plan of care and return to play. Regardless of any frustration on your athlete's part it is a good idea to involve your ATC.

    • @bkleineATC
      @bkleineATC  9 лет назад

      They bring said, if an athlete presents like that to me and they show good motion, good strength, and intact distal circulation and sensation, I'd do this thumb taping on him and get him back on the field. Often times adding a glove is supportive to minor thumb injuries also.

      Vanessa Quijada not if you do it properly. The tape needs to be laid down, not pulled into place like many other tape jobs. If circulation is impeded it must be redone.
