thank you. I'm so tired of seeing coaches teaching shallow blades and just putting the blade in at its "natural" depth which is always too shallow and almost invariably pops up during the drive. As you have said, to be properly connected it should be somewhat deep at the catch.

I've just restarted rowing again in France and they are telling me my blade is too deep and I should be able to see the top of my blade during the power phase. I've been out maiinly in a quad. I accept that that I was tensing my shoulders and digging my blades orginally so that wasn't good, but now I've corrected that I feel like my connection is really light ahd I'm not using all of my potential power. This video gave me hope about my feelings in the boat. However I guess I have a question about how deep is too deep? If i get the whole of the blade covered, how much of the shaft should be covered too?

Many coaches disagree on blade depth(and have very strong opinions as a result) A shallow blade that’s just buried is much more likely to catch air and become ineffective(especially if the rower is a beginner) a deep blade is always well connected but you don’t want it so deep that it effects your drive phase and ability to apply power with the legs and body. Also you don’t want it to be too deep at the finish so you can get the blade out easily. We recommend a you place two pieces of tape on your oar shaft one 30cm from the blade and the other another 30cm from the tape and make sure that the first one is buried in the water during the stroke and the second one isn’t.
