great advice, will give all of this a go.
Nice exercise! I only believe it has mostly to do with opening up the hip, that the rower can create a counter momentum and stay on the ground, not so much by the arms. I believe arm grab is more a result of seeking connection with your arms instead of with your legs, and that it's more about better timing of the catch?
