  • This video shows thunderstorms rattling San Jose, CA during the early morning hours! This type of weather is certainly a rarity here at home, let alone us being under the ‘marginal’ thunderstorm risk area (marginal risk for severe weather). My all-nighter attempt was totally worth it in the end. The thunder was so loud that it had set off multiple car alarms around the neighborhood. Once the lightning and thunder subsided, the heavy downpours quickly followed, drenching us. Lingering rain showers and maybe more t-storms were possible as the morning progressed. More active weather was certainly in store for the region as the day went on…
Even a rare (but short-lived) tornado had occurred up in Scotts Valley (yes, up in the Santa Cruz Mountains where storms typically die off, hence our rain shadow here) during the afternoon hours. The National Weather Service says the tornado had hit Scotts Valley at around 1:40 p.m. The tornado lasted around 5 minutes or so. Several people were injured. The NWS stated that a preliminary damage survey had determined that the tornado was categorized as a 1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale… This storm system certainly had crazy dynamics. Overnight, the system’s initial cold front brought rain and gusty southerly winds. Then the unstable airmass behind ushered in the more interesting part: early morning thunderstorms! The whole shebang (heavy rain, damaging winds, thunderstorms with a good deal of lightning and thunder, and of course tornadoes) was witnessed from this system alone! Fun weather indeed! Great video! Those were some loud cracks of thunder! Loved the lightning flashes and horizontal bolts! Wish we were getting rain down here in Vegas area. We haven’t had measurable rain in over 160 days! Last time it rained at my place was September 20th.
