  • Time to CELEBRATE the good and reflect on some FAILS that can help us become better fish keepers. When I started making this list, I was pleasantly surprised at how many accomplishments I had in 2023. I urge you to also make a list of things you did or things you're proud of from 2023 and share them here in the comments! And this doesn't have to be African cichlids or American cichlids -- it can be any kind of tropical fish. Thanks for watching!
    Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

    We have very few "fish" in common but I really enjoy your style and humor. My biggest accomplishment was finally realizing that a full fish room (30 tanks) was too much and I was getting burned out. Downsizing to my 11 favorites saved the hobby for me. I have kept fish since 1976 but I still find new things to do all the time and now that the fish room is "easier" I am tackling new things. Thanks for what you do!

      That is a HUGE accomplishment. So many people take on too much, and then they burnout, quit and never come back. There's wisdom in knowing when to stop adding tanks.

    You’ve done an excellent job this year I think. I’ve had some losses with fish this year but gained a great amount as well with taking on three tanks of discus. I’m working on scraping and took on real plants. Said I’d never do real ones but hear I am 2023 in the plant game. I’ve had apistogramma pairs and single fish and none have made it thus far. You’re so blessed to have become an apistogramma grandpa. I’m not gonna give up though. I about gave up on rams but have now kept them successfully. Just keep trying. And congratulations on the babies! Can’t wait to see the South American tank. I’m a keeper of those as well. Shoot I love all fish!

      Real plants are so difficult- a whole different dimension to the hobby. I can only somewhat keep easy ones alive right now. Good job on that, plus rams are super difficult to keep alive, so congrats! @pollylewis9611 also has started having success with rams. She’s a regular here. Thanks for the great comment!

    I feel like we had a similar year in fish keeping, I had all the hopes is the world and I got grounded by reality when my wish list began to out grow my tanks, but I got more tanks. Like you my worst failure became my biggest opportunity and with that being said I will never make the same mistakes. Here is to 2024 and wishing you and everyone AND their fish a happy and healthy year full of grace and vitality 🎉❤🎉❤

    Cichlid Charmer,
    Great video brother. This was awesome that you put out about the best and worse of 2023. I love the channel and where it’s going. The editing and videos have definitely gotten a lot better and those colors on the nut jobs. lol. 😂 appreciate the work you do and can’t wait to see where you take the channel. Congratulations on 10k subs. You should get that CA tank up sooner than later you won’t regret it. The way my fish interact with me and how they are like little pups and crazy 😜 at some times can be frustrating but worth it watch them thrive and swim slowly around. Let me know if you want me to send you pictures of my 100 gal CA tank to you. 😂❤ here’s to 2024 and beyond.

      Aw thanks to you too, I have to tell you and don't tell my family, I'm looking into a 75gal tank setup, but I'll have to sneak it into my cozy house, like you I may have to sell a pair of earrings (your poor wife haha just kidding) I can get my 125gal back but that takes up more space and harder to sneak that into my house. On my 90 gallon aquarium i use Three (48" / 35 watt) Fluval AquaSky 2.0 lights. Each light is the same as the full length of my aquarium. They Rock! I use 3 lights because then you get light coming from all angles. Also it's pretty sweet to change colors on the 3 different lights to make a different visual effect in the tank. So i have the Front, Mid & Back light. if i have all 3 lights (F, M, B) set on White, i keep all three at White 15%. sometimes I set my lights to B=100% Blue, M=100% Blue, F=10% White. You can do Lots of set-ups having the 3 seperate lights. Best Thing ever Visually to have this set-up.

    I’m wanting new lights for my #125 peacock/ hap tank. I’ve been looking at the fluval 3.0 marine ( 2-36”) . This is about the top of my price range , my question is ….would you recommend these lights ?

    • @CichlidCharmer
      @CichlidCharmer  5 месяцев назад +1

      I’m using them now and they are wonderful on my AC tank. I’m still planning on switching to the AI Primes eventually, but more because I like the light above the tank several inches to a foot, and I like the light falloff, but you can still get that to some degree by suspending the lights above the tank and using shorter strips than your tank length (I already do that last one). I bought my strips on fb marketplace. Saved a bunch of $ and they work great. A little risky though…. Thanks for asking and I hope you like them if you go for it!

    • @CichlidCharmer

      Hello, PULAG. So only a structural engineer can safely guarantee your floor is strong enough to support a big tank. Is it over 75 gallons?

      @@PULAGThat’s not HUGE, and I’m no engineer so this isn’t for sure, but might be okay just putting on an an outside support bearing wall with joists running perpendicularly to the tank. That’s what I’ve done.
