    Fixing potholes is a much higher priority than riding/driving at 100mph.
    As a cyclist, motor cyclist, car driver, ex HGV driver, ex rally driver my view is that the problem with a higher speed limit is, we would need drivers with a higher IQ There are too many drivers on the road that are not safe driving at the current speed limits. No way would I want to be riding my bike at 100mph on any public road, madness😜

    I agree with you about 85% that speed limits need increasing and that vehicle technology have advanced so much in recent years that vehicles are capable of so much more.
    However, before this goes through, the roads need to be brought up to an acceptable standard for travelling at faster speeds, plus the roads need to be policed better to remove these people who think sitting at 50 mph in the middle lane is acceptable, which in my opinion causes more accidents than a higher speed limit ever will.
    And there is also the need to get rid of smart motorways

    as a 16 turning 17 yr old i’m not fully for the 80 or 100 mph speed limit because of the bike license situation. if i’m riding a 125 cc that can barely get to 68-70 mph then i’m never going to be able to keep up with other vehicles on the road. i think if they’re going to increase the speed limit then they should also loosen up the restrictions on the A1 license. maybe restrict it to 300 cc or something that can kind of keep up at least. it’s already not great for 125 riders and if the licenses don’t change for the better then a higher speed limit will only make things worse in my opinion.

      @@danhollyoak4793 you are able to go on a motorway at 17 if you ride a 125cc bike/moped and done your mod 1 and mod 2 assessments. not at 16 tho because at that age you’re only allowed up to a 50cc engine which isn’t allowed on a motorway

    • @Bordpie
      @Bordpie Месяц назад

      There aren't many people who bother with the A1 licence anyway as the improvements over a CBT are not significant: removing your L plates; being able to carry a pillion; removal of the 60mph limit for CBT riders; and riding on a motorway. For the last three, the power of a 125 limits you doing these things anyway, so most people save their money and don't bother redoing the Mod1 and Mod2 again (and paying for it) for the A2 and/or A licence afterwards.
      The gears were beginning to turn on the licence system changes, but then the general election has halted that, for now at least.
      Granted that with increases in speed limits, the power required on the motorway and other roads increases. Like some Royal Enfields, 350s, 411s can struggle on the motorway as is, a higher speed would mean a higher power requirement, and maybe something designed more like a tourer e.g. windscreen, to do longer distances comfortably.
      Overall I'd opt for the higher speed limits anyway. More throughput of traffic on the motorway hopefully means less traffic on other roads where the slower bikes can go :).

    There are three groups of issues: -
    (1) The standard and skill level of the driver.
    (2) The design, specifications and maintenance standard of the vehicle.
    (3) The quality and condition of the surface the vehicle is travelling along.
    There not going to be many situations where all three groups of issues are suitably satisfactory for travelling safely at increased speeds. It is likely that the average 'drivers' will see an increased speed limit as merely a permission to drive faster and have no knowledge or understanding of other factors or even any notion that there might be any. A lot of people not even safe at 70mph. Then there are those few who have the knowledge, understanding and skill to drive and control a vehicle safely at speeds well in excess of our current speed limits.
    An increase in speed limits would first need an increase in driving standards and skill. It is also likely that a significant number of vehicles would need new tyres with a suitably higher speed rating, which would likely be too expensive for a lot of people on a budget. The annual MOT test may become a lot more stringent to try and make sure vehicles are safe for such speeds. This is, of course, before you add to the mix the potentially deadly cocktail of non-domestic vehicles and licences which may be of a much lower standard than our own. And finally, where does this leave law enforcement and other emergency services?
    In a nutshell, it is a far more complex issue than simply increasing a number so people can travel faster without getting a ticket. Raising the speed limit will seem fine until suddenly it isn't and it's all gone very horribly wrong. I do not wish to see a long red streak down the motorway of what was once a motorcyclist because something went wrong or a mistake was made by someone.
    There are already people suffering with lifelong injuries from events that occurred at our current speed limits. At higher limits these people, or family members and (close) friends would likely not still be with us. Is it really worth such an increase in risk and possibility of losing a loved one just to get somewhere a little sooner?

  • @BlokeOnAMotorbike
    @BlokeOnAMotorbike 2 месяца назад +2

    I'm not complaining about highway limits, a: because I can't legally go on motorways and b: my bike requires ideal conditions to hit the redline in top gear anyway, which is 63.6mph. What does bug me slightly is the 20mph urban limit areas, purely from the standpoint of fuel consumption. 20mph for me is high revving in 2nd or running almost stall speed in 3rd. Also potholes.

  • @complex136
    @complex136 2 месяца назад +5

    I’m not 100% sure about this, but aren’t smart motorways designed so that the speed limit is displayed digitally in some areas? Then the speed limit would be variable such that on clearer days, the speed limit would be higher. The national speed limit should be higher, but jumping from 70 to 100 is a bit much considering people will be speeding anyway. I feel like national speed limit should be 90, but on clearer days the smart motorway system could allow for more flexibility around that.

    I completely agree with your opinion for every type of vehicle except 125cc bikes, I am going to sign the petition but I do think that is the only example against 80mph would be because 125cc bikes would be at risk riding a vulnerable vehicle 10mph or more under the speed limit due to the limit of the bike, not to mention A1 riders who have the option to use the motorway would be 30mph or more below the surrounding cars. At the peak of a 125s capability there is already very little avoidance measures at the current speed limits and I'm sure you would agree after riding your wife's kawasaki? The inability to avoid danger using speed is one of the most dangerous things about a 125 and in my opinion this would multiply that danger because of the speed of surrounding vehicles. I will note I have seen mopeds on dual carriageways going 30-35mph but I would be scared for my life seeing the speed of cars going past me at 60/70 let alone 80.

    In Feb 2022 I was inspired by your vlogs to buy a ZX14R (best decision ever) after an unwanted 25-year hiatus, having left my beloved GPz1000RX languishing in the UK, to work (and decide to stay) in California, USA.
    I voted with my feet to escape what I considered to be the "nanny" state of affairs - including oppressive use of speed limit to collect revenue.
    Having vacationed in 1980's on my CB400N, VF1000FE & GPz.
    In 1993 I was fortunate to take a 2 year opportunity to work in Germany, taking both GPz and Golf II GTi 16valve.
    The derestricted nature of riding/driving on the continent between Stuttgart & Bracknell was totally safe and doable.
    Unnecessary restrictive, revenue generating speed laws serve to bring the authorities and law itself into disrespect - Counter productive for Good Govenance & not Democratic !
    My best wishes, to all who value thier freedom and thier responsibilities.

    All I hear in this video is me, me, me, me ,me. I want, I'm being punished. Guess what, it's not all about you fella. We are all sharing the roads at the same time for different reasons, some people are having a jolly, some people are commuting for work, some are going on holiday, some are transporting animals, some are hauling goods. The roads have to accommodate for all of these people and meet a ground which suits all. In the daytime, I have people up my arse even when going over the speed limit, so when you increase the speed limit they're just going to want to go even faster as it will never be enough. When I use the motorways 9/10 they're overcrowded and blocked anyway and you can barely do 70 nevermind 80/90/100. I can only see increasing the speed limit being an advantage when the roads are significantly quieter (11pm through to early hours of the morning).
    Saying that having faster speed limits won't be a cause for more accidents is a silly thing to say, more speed means greater stopping distances, quicker reaction times required it's a simple equation. You're only thinking of the perfect scenario here Goblin of everything going well, it doesn't matter if the speed limit is 200mph if the motorway is gridlocked for 10 mile because some gobshite thought he was Michael Dunlop, now nobody can go anywhere and everyone's day is ruined.
    It's very well known that people having different skill levels when driving and yes some people can go quicker than others and have no problems, the Isle of Man TT is a prime example of people being 'able' to go quicker however you wouldn't want average people the ability to do this. Goblin you and all alot of other speed enthusiasts might think you're a great, fantastic rider however the normal member of the public doesn't want you or your bike/car smashing into their family when he's doing 60 and you think you're clever going 80. More speed = more damage.
    You're right, the problem isn't speed. The problem is speed differential, when you're going 60 and you bump into another car's backend that's also going 60 it's not usually much more than a bump. However if you're going 80 and smash into someone going 60 there's a big difference. Obviously this isn't true when crashing into something head on, this was meant more for motorways.
    Wow, this has gone on for awhile. What an essay! Your opinion at 17:17 is that of someone who is quite immature "any of you that argue against it are part of the problem". This shows that you aren't interested in any rational explanation you are only interested in people in your echo chamber that spurt out the same as you. Luckily, you don't make decisions 😊.
    The enjoyment of getting an extra 10-20mph is a load of rubbish, suddenly it will become the norm and everyone will go back to being pre-occupied with doing other things but this time they will be going faster with less concentration. I love going fast, the public road isn't the place for it, go and find a track. If you want to go fast and also be on a public road, go and enter the Isle of Man TT where the environment is controlled. The speed limit won't be increased it'll more likely be decreased during the day, like I mentioned I can only see it being a positive late at night/ early hours when the dual carriageways and motorways are quieter.

    The DPRB lives under the rule of the Duma (look it up). The rule, as written, trumps all. No matter the circumstances. That's why they're also slowly taking away police discretion.
    Just as an example, in France, some migrant guy saved a kid from something (a fire maybe? Can't remember the exact details). They gave him French citizenship. In the DPRB they deport these people, once they've come to the attention of the authorities.
    This isn't new either - look what they did to Alan Turing. Guy should have been given a knighthood for what he did. Instead they effectively killed him. In 2014 they gave him a posthumous pardon and official apology (much good that'll do him...), but nothing's really changed. No lessons learnt.

    The "debate" was settled decades ago. The whole topic is akin to Americans still debating healthcare. Everyone with a functioning brain who looks into it knows there's a better solution that's already tried and tested.
    On restricted access highways (ie on/off ramps), a dynamic speed limit works best with the default being no limit during good visibility, weather conditions, etc. Then drop it temporarily for bad visibility / night, inclement weather, construction, known problem areas (poorly designed interchanges or bridges that force lanes to condense), etc.

    As a biker with over 50 years experience I disagree with increasing the speed limits on duel carriage ways & motorways . It’s bad enough already that we have homicidal drivers on our roads already ,with the national speed limit at 70 mph . Just because we have modern safety features ,it doesn’t mean we cancel them out, by increasing the risks . If we make the speed limits on motorways a 100 mph , the idiots who think their on a race track now will see it as a licence to hit 120 mph . It will be similar results on 80 mph duel carriageways . I don’t see what all the rush is about , many a time I see vehicles flying past only to be stuck at the lights . If you want to ride fast , go & do it on a race track., public roads aren’t the place for it nor built for it . The bone yards are full of drivers & riders who were arrogant & thought they were in control & the law shouldn’t apply to them .

    What happens when someone breaks down on the shoulder and people are blasting past at 100? or god forbid they break down in the middle lanes and they have to try and navigate traffic passing at 100 with no power to get to the shoulder? What about lorries still stuck to 60mph? How often do you take a journey on the motorway where 10 miles actually makes a difference per hour? What about poor road surfaces or even debris in the road? Try swerving around a bumper or pole that got ejected from a pickup at 100mph, youll fly off the road. 100mph is just unnecessarily dangerous. The 70mph isnt a problem, the only problem with it is impatience. I think at least on smart motorways, the speed limit should be able to be put above 70 when road conditions allow, say at the middle of the night with zero traffic, but 100mph even in that situation is stupid af.

      SMART motorways are killing so very many and the figures are hidden - most SMART motorway RTAs involve slow moving traffic in thwe slow lane hitting stationary/broken down vehicles and no services - fire, police, ambulance can reach them. SMART roads should be scrapped and hard shoulders reintroduced and the 100MPH speed limit updated from the 1950s 70MPH limit when cars did not have the brakes good enough to stop quickly.

      As for relative speed when catching up to other traffic, I don't think anyone is saying you should be doing 110mph all the time everywhere. The point is it's an arbitrary limit that's enforced at all times, even when there isn't a benefit to having it (i.e. when the situation permits going faster).
      The rule that serves you best when speeding responsibly is "You must not go faster than you can stop in the distance you see to be clear on your side of the road". Think of how many problems this one solves, and how many questions it answers. The only issue is it requires a competent, capable, rational human at the other end. That should be what they're testing for, not whether you can follow a sat nav, keep your hands at 10 and 2, and shuffle the steering wheel like it's 1931.

The M4 especially with it's lack of emergency lane is dangerous enough already, at 100mph it will be a death trap.
