Once a reporter asked Zach if Rage would ever write a love song. He responded with something like “I view protest as an act of love. Every song I’ve written is a love song.” I love that.

The only thing I don’t like about RATM is how relevant their music still is 30 years later. It’s like they warned us and no one listened. Other songs to check out would be Know Your Enemy, Bulls on Parade, Testify, and Renegades of Funk.

Similarly to old protest singers. Gil Scott-Heron, Nina Simone, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, John Lennon, Victor Jara (executed by Chile), Arlo Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Joe Strummer, Jello Biafra etc

The fact is, people have been living like we are now all along, but it wasn't "polite" to talk about it. Racism has always been a large part of the police forces, oppression of the poor is as old as money, our "government" is just a popularity contest for the rich etc... The machine has been running since long before any of us were born and likely will be long after all of us fill a hole in the ground.

I wouldn’t categorize RATM as nu metal but they definitely influenced it. They mix a lot of funk and rhythm into many tracks. They are in a category of their own in my opinion.

I grew up during RATM's heyday. I vividly remember the Rodney King riots, as I lived in a city just south of LA.
And some people are so dense, you just have to repeat your message over and again until it sinks in. 🤘

As a 74 yo that’s experienced the ‘60s and all we thought we as Americans were working for, there’s still more work to do.
RATM has found their place with all the protest movement musicians that my generation grew up with.
    Be mindful, next generations.
    There’s more work to do.
    Rallye ‘round the family.
    Peace, out🦸‍♂️❤️

WAKE UP, DOWN RODEO, PEOPLE OF THE SUN.
it's best to watch the live versions, but have the lyrics pulled up on your phone. this one was simple and repetitive, but WAKE UP will blow you away (about MLK, X, JEH, etc)

So this song is the pinnacle of what Rage specializes in… they use irresistible, almost hypnotic, introductory instrumentals to suck you In because they have a very specific message that they want you to hear on a subconscious/conscious level. They use the a method of speeding up and slowing down the music and using repetition to drill in while you’re under their spell…. I’m aging myself but I remember when this album dropped in 93’… I was 10 years old and snuck their album, which I had a cassette of, and fell in love and have been a fan ever since… you’re absolutely spot on!! this song was inspired by the atrocity that surrounded the LAPD’s brutal assault on Rodney King… Killing in the name of……. this is where we are free to fill in the blank…. “In the name of “law enforcement “ “the government” “white supremacy” ………… the first thing that comes to mind to finish the phrase when “in the name of” is usually God. But that’s the one answer that doesn’t belong here… Their song “ down rodeo “ and “testify” and bulls on parade are worth a listen!

This is def their most famous song, but by far their most simplistic. I HIGHLY recommend checking out their other stuff, as Zack spits BARS with some real Public Enemy conscious rap on other tracks. Love that you looked up he interviewed Chomsky. Zach gets it. Look up the songs (with lyrics) of the songs Wake Up, Vietnow, Bullet in the Head, Maria, Take the Power Back, Down Rodeo, Bulls on Parade, Sleep Now in the Fire. Or their cover of Afrika Bambataa Renegades of Funk.

One of the greatest side notes about this band is that this song became number one in the UK for a short time in 2009. People were fed up with the crap that was spoon fed them from the Britain's Got Talent shit, and so this song breifly hit number one in the UK. RATM were asked to perform it live on air, but without the "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" part in there. Like you could ask a band called Rage Against the Machine to do what they tell ya when the song they are famous for is Fuck you I won't do what you tell me. LMMFAO. What dumbshits at the BBC thought they could make this fly? OMG, I"m still dying.

I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this song, and you were one of the quickest to make the connection to the beating of Rodney King. This was indeed written in response to that and the riots in response.
And the song saw a resurgence in popularity in 2020 after George Floyd’s murder. Like someone else said, I hate how the music is still so relevant.

Their self titled debut album is just nonstop bangers, you can't really go wrong. Zach is always spouting some knowledge.
    Next up:
Bulls on Parade - about the US military-industrial complex
Wake Up - on the sins of the FBI
Down Rodeo - talking about inequality

Their BBC appearance with this song is pretty great. They (BBC) told RATM that they had to leave off the FUs. Three guesses if they complied. One wonders if the person who decided that was a smart thing had never ever heard RATM. I mean. The song is "FU I WON'T DO WHAT YA TELL ME" after all. LAPD and LA County cops are still as dirty as ever.

Why the band doesn't like Fred Durst; it's nothing personal, it's the fact that Fred has a platform and is obligated to speak out on the same issues Rage speaks out on, and does not. Fred Durst appears all too willing to accept the status quo while Rage fought tirelessly to change it.

You can pick any song of theirs and it’ll be a banger. I’m pleasantly surprised there’s no right wing weirdos in the comments saying they “rage for the machine” now. Millions of people heard “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” and think it’s just a song about non-compliance.
Rage has always been clear about their message, it’s sad that it’s relevant as ever today.
It seems like you may have the lyrics up, if not, definitely have them handy on every song. They’re so chocked full of history, it’s easy to miss the message without the lyrics.
My favorites: Take the Power Back, Freedom, Mic Check, Wake up, god there are so many lol

The reason the lyrics are repetitive is because the message is simple and they are making it clear how they feel, how all of us feel. We are tired of the division and those in authority continue to abuse their power. Im not speaking on all police, but those that abuse their power. Its time we focus on love and uplifting everyone, regardless of race or social status.

There are 3 kinds of Rage Against the Machine fans:
    1. "Like their music, but not the politics"
    2. "This is about politics?"
    3. "Listen closer, this is the most important band of Gen X USA"
I'm of that 3rd variety. Every song is a history lesson.
MLK gave a speech in '67 called, "3 evils of society". The 3 evils he listed are Racism, Militarization, and capitalism. Opposing these themes permeates every single song Rage made, but they specifically refer to that speech, MLK, and X in "Wake up", which also features over the credits of the "Matrix" and is a huge clue about the movie's real meaning
Other notable names they mention or sing about, worth looking up:
    Fred Hampton (Down Rodeo)
Weather Underground Organization (Take the power back)
    Leonard Peltier (Freedom)
Genovevo De La O (Bulls on Parade)
Its a deep rabbit hole you must follow. Highly polaring, do it for your channel ONLY if you want to bring real talk (and arguments) to your comments.
But do it for you, regardless.
for Rodney, and George and the millions of others who never made the news.
    ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻✊️❤️
