Now to CHOOSE whether to leave a comment or not... hm, well, it seems I already have! What do you think? Is this the true moral of the pacifist route, or do you feel it's something else? Let me know! If you particularly enjoyed this episode, please like the Reddit post! www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/5xo6cw/the_hidden_message_of_undertales_true_pacifist/
I believe the moral of the story is "everyone can be a good person if they just try." "Don't kill and don't be killed. That's the best you can strive for." It's just about trying to strive to be a decent human being.
But killing is the only way to learn and experience more. The pacifist ending is made all the better by seeing the contrast in other actions you can perform.
Undertale has many meanings. What you said is true. I was always thinking about other representation of our lovely monsters. Because every monster in the umdergroumd can be attached to one of goals, that many of us, people, have. Flowey - we're not counting him, because he can't feel love, so he can't have any long-time goals and love is kind of needed for that. But we can say that he represents one quote (he said it himself even) "To live in world without love? It wouldn't make any sense." Toriel - we can say, that she represents 'Just live happily with family' type. I know, she leaved Asgore, but because it says 'happily' the rule still works. She wouldn't be happy with someone, who is a murderer. Sans - As you said, he knows too much for his own good. Because of that we can say he's a 'Live in this moment' type. He knows, that there will be no future, so he isn't trying to complete any goal, because it can be erased any moment. Instead he just enjoy's time with friends. That's maybe, why is he so angry on genocide path - we took him even doing nothing, because you can't do nothing all alone. Papyrus - he is a complete opposite of his brother. We can describe in goal 'Follow your dreams'. He imagined, that he's in Royal Guard - he tries to make it true. And he doesn't give up, no matter what. Undyne - she wants to protect her kind even if it costs her life. So I'll attach her to 'Just make tgose around you happy'. We can also say that she's kind of selfless, because during the genocide run, right before dying she isn't talking about her failure, but about that, that someone will finally stop player. Overall, Undyne wants just to protect ones, she love and she has no fear of death if only others will survive. Alphys - Unlike previous, she cares alot, what others think about her. So she is like... 'Make people like you'. To do that she tried to invent In the Pacifist Ending everyone's dreams come true. So the lesson is: No matter what your goal is, if you stay determinated, you can complete it.
I think that you did a pretty good job deciphering the purpose of this game. One theme I always noticed is that Undertale doesn't really have any true villains in it. All of the characters are each flawed in their own unique way, as you pointed out, but by the end of the Pacifist Route, it becomes almost impossible to think of them as enemies. Heck, you can even defend Chara if you want to. Lots of fans will be quick to tell you that even Chara, who calls his/herself a demon, was implied to have had a very rough life on the surface. Maybe the message is that there is good in even the most evil flowers, and all you need to do is take the time to find it.
Yes! Totally! This only didn’t happen bc he wanted revenge for Asriel’s death, also the monsters of the underground would probably be outraged because of him doing that (cough Undyne cough)
No that couldn’t happen sorry because he would become to attached to the human overtime bc remember how he and tori cared for chara and then she died the underground was devoid of hope so maybe if asgore had done that it would be to heartbreaking for to after caring for a child then having them die to take their soul would be heartbreaking so I prefer the way tori states on the pacifist ending asgore could have crossed with charas soul and kill six *EVIL AND OR BAD* humans not small innocent ones like the past humans as some of them were thought to be children so no as I like how you prefer how you would like to do things peacefully though it wouldn’t really Work out it was a good idea
before doing that, she already chose to not forgive him simply for the decision he made to declare war on humans once again. despite the fact the only reason he'd done so was to give hope back to the people, he never wanted to hurt anyone. as a side note. toriel is pretty hypocritical, she gets on asgores case but she herself couldn't practice what she preached about taking a single soul and going to the surface to get the others. she and asgore of all people should know why that wouldn't work, look at what happened to asriel when he tried that.
It makes even more sense when you consider the negative forms of the same moral, of which there are two, presented in the Genocide run.The first is that all actions have consequences, and those consequences have to matter. Sans and Flowey both pretty much state this flat out to you, from their own understanding or experience of parallel universes and that when actions cease to have any lasting impact, life becomes meaningless. The other, and more cynical, moral comes not from what *is* said, but from what *isn't*, and it is this: ignorance is bliss - because any character in the Undertale universe who comes anywhere within sniffing distance of the ultimate truth presented in the first moral, in one way or another, goes mad. Sans is broken by it. Flowey is driven to extreme lengths out of sheer ennui by it. W D Gaster virtually ceases to exist from his exposure to it, and the remnants left behind are incredibly disturbing. Even Alphys, and by extension Mettaton, could be argued to be negatively affected by the truth through their association with Gaster. Chara becomes a soulless, heartless monster simply because the law of infinite universes dictates that somewhere, at some time, she must. But the one who is impacted worst of all has to be the player, simply because of the sheer depths we ourselves have to willingly stoop to, exerting our own free will that nobody else in the story has in order to prove this moral to be true.
I always take the message of the Pacifist route as: Being the bigger person despite all that happens to you, not giving in to hatred and resentment, not judging people for their life choices/preferences and not having prejudice or cemented opinions on them, knowing people do things for a reason and being open-minded, accepting and respectful.
I don't know what's wrong with me. I've downloaded the game, but I haven't played it yet and I know everything to the littlest detail from both the pacifist run and the genocide run.
underlab you are a reason why I always come back for undertale you are the reason why I never get bored of undertale no matter how much I play it i just love you're videos i love that you never stop to find things in undertale that is why i always watch you're you're interest in undertale determines me to keep playing
9:30 Actually, Asriel warns us after talking to him at the first room a lot that "There are lots of Floweys out there, and not everything can be solved by being nice."
In a nutshell- Being kind to all isn't the best, but doing the right thing to all, even those who may not deserve it, is the good thing to do. Also, quoting Spiderman here: "With great power comes great responsibility."
Underlab I noticed something about that. There aren't any fleshly humans in the credits, or anywhere in the game, except Frisk/Chara, and drawings and very vague references to a war between -children- humans and -adults- monsters. Some scenes in the credits correspond to Earthbound scenes, which are usually filled with humans. I dunno if it means anything, but it's the most terrifying part of the game to me. There is an ending in Chrono Trigger where all the humans never exist, they're replaced with dinosaurs, because certain things did and didn't happen in the timeline. That was oddly satisfying on its own, but in context of Undertale it's absolutely chilling. Again, maybe overthinking it, but, the ending is eerie anyway.
My brother has a series where aliens and humans both live on earth. But of course, history repeats itself. So the aliens for a while went through segregation and crap and aliens in the present are still facing casual racism (speciesism???) So that could be an idea of why there aren’t any humans in the credits. Maybe the monsters are being put in different places then the humans.
Basically the true meaning of everything and not even in Undertale is friendship. DETERMINATION not to kill but to make everyone your friend and that's actually a goal I set for my life that Undertale taught me. It truly has changed my life even if I was a bit late discovering it (mid 2016 ugh).
I personally think the meaning of the true pasifist ending is kind of what you said but also that there is allways a good path through. As all monsters where stuck underground, no hope of getting out exept for human souls but a single human who's fate would be death, saved them all.
I think the true pacifist route's message is friendship, because you don't hurt anyone in four regions: Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland, and you befriended monsters: Toriel, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys and Asgore.
I would argue that Undyne isn't attacking you out of prejudice and narrow-mindedness; rather, in the Pacifist route, she attacks you because she knows the monsters need the seventh human soul to break the barrier (the same reason as Asgore).
I see the point of it all is we are all unique people with free will. How the world is dark enough without our added selfservitude and coldheartedness. Most may see this as innocent or childish but ive lived torments that have broken minds and wills to live. By kindness and what it brings back is what helped me overcome even as screwed up as I and all else was. I am a living testament to the idea that random acts of selfless kindness can heal even the most broken soul. Hince the warmth of our hearts IS "the answer." I will you all well. Stay Determined. ❤
I interpret the message of the True Pacifist run as "Be the better person." Sure, you can't be friends with everyone and you can't resolve everything by being nice. But, as long as you don't let other people's horrible actions influence you, you won't be as horrible as they are. Just as Asriel says if you go back to the beginning during the ending of the game: "Be careful in the outside world, there are a lot of "Flowey's" out there and not everything can be resolved by just being nice."
Król Cieni Actually, you *DO* befriend the entirety of the Underground from the *FIGHTS* you encounter, though you see the main characters join you, implying the ones you befriended also joining in. From the end intro. Well.. decept for the ones who dont join you..
Just because sans thinks keeping promises is good, despite him never making one, it doesn't mean its moral to not break a promise. It depends on the opportunity cost and new information.
Plus, Asriel tells you that acting that way won't work on the surface; the best you can strive for is to not kill and not be killed. You have to do a neutral route before pacifist; even if you do not kill anyone yourself, Asgore still dies and the human souls are gone. You don't have to reset, but if you do you can help them all. While simply being nice to all the monsters turns out well, Asriel states that doing that won't work. You cannot befriend everyone and you cannot solve every problem by getting nice. The best you can strive for on the surface is to not kill and to not be killed. Keep in mind Asriel died because he was nice and didn't attack the humans.
Personally, if theres a mountain called Mt. Ebbott and theres a hole in it with a flower bed at the bottom, you better believe im jumping down that hole. (actually probably not)
Part of Flowey's psychopathy is that he has no soul and thus, no compassion. But also, like Sans, everything seems pointless to him. Unlike Sans though, who is only aware of resets, it's because Flowey remembers what happens after every one of his own resets. He's seen every possible reaction from every interaction with every monster in the underground. Nothing is new to him anymore, as he already knows the result and because of this, he has become bored with existence. Perhaps not knowing of how many resets Frisk/Chara has been involved in--as if you play the game after the True Pacifist route, his memory is also reset--Frisk and Chara are the only ones who change the outcomes to those Flowey hasn't already witnessed. Flowey is as happy as a being who can't actually feel anything can be with the result of the True Pacifist route, because for the first time in who knows how long--to him, anyway--even Flowey doesn't know what comes next. That is, until Chara/The Player arrives with the intent to play the game again which is why Flowey wants his memory erased as well. Imagine finally not knowing exactly what's going to happen next, only to have that timeline ended and possibly having to live through another timeline in which you've already seen the ending.
Underlab you are the mat pat of undertale you really know how to change perspective this theory really stood out to me it really does feel good to be the better person even when someone doesn't deserve
Y'know? One reason I love Undertale is because of how ironic sans is: he likes joking around and likes puns, when really, he's just really depressed about how pointless his existence is, hence the reason why he likes sleeping. (Sleeping is a part of depression) and he likes jokes because it eases his mental pain.
I now have faith in humanity. Something I haven't had in a long time. I am glad I decided to watch this it made me feel something I haven't in years, HOPE.
I agreed, but I also thought maybe the point of the route was that everyone deserves forgiveness, no matter what. As for the Genocide run, it is the exact opposite, preferably for grudge holders.
Personally i do agree with you but i think there's an even deeper meaning you can't save everyone because you can't save asriel but i also think that the meaning might be that to gain power you have to make sacrifices
So i have a theory so Gaster is a messed up sans wait but how do we have the normal one well what if sans used a clone machine so then after they did a experiment and then the first sans fell into their creation "the core " so then the first sans became corrupted and melted and became Gaster and that is my theory.
+Just a potato trying to improve their art thank you for correcting my sentence :P and according to MatPats theory, gaster fell into his core experiment and flew through time and space. But he had a shit ton of determination injected into him so where did it go? Gaster is represented as sans and papyrus for papyrus has more feeling and enjoys physical jokes (the right brain) and sans has more knowledge and enjoys puns (the left brain) and sans even uses is left hand more often and papyrus with the right hand (this is just symbolism, he knows the right side controls the left and the left with the right) and when he died, that's how sans and papyrus suddenly "appeared" according to the shop keeper in Snowdin. Hopefully I summed it up all correctly without forgetting any important details.
Flowey has Asriel's conscience and memories, he could've easily not killed as many people as possible, but because he blamed himself for he and Chara's death by not fighting back against the humans, he adopted the "Kill or be Killed" view of the world. Flowey really is Asriel but without the ability to feel any positive emotions. He knew what he was doing was wrong, he just didn't care and went along with it anyway.
Goatmom's maternal instincts are powerful. I know it's wrong of her to keep Frisk underground..but if I were Frisk, it wouldn't be in me to leave her. She's so lonely down there. D:
At the end of the true pacifist route, a song called "Respite" plays, the definition of respite is: "a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant" This is probably predicting that after true pacifist, the player will reset and do genocide, which is what happens in most case, I think that after pacifist, you should just set down the game, let the characters enjoy their happy ending, don't ruin it because you got bored
This is why I love this channel. Most of us have "finished" UnderTale from a gameplay perspective, but this channel can still cook up something to talk about *without* it sounding forced. This channel is able to accept that UnderTale has flaws, but that it's still possible to enjoy it despite them. Sometimes, we analyse mysteries of UnderTale that can't be proven one way or the other, like the CORE running on Soul power. Other times, we have a complex look at something in the game most of us took for granted and end up seeing it in a whole new light, like this episode. And other times, we just have a little fun with the game's quirks, like when we calculated how much Gold was worth, or looked at the scientific parallels of the characters and their homes.
Now to CHOOSE whether to leave a comment or not... hm, well, it seems I already have! What do you think? Is this the true moral of the pacifist route, or do you feel it's something else? Let me know!

It's just about trying to strive to be a decent human being.
For me the true meaning is: Killing will lead to nothing. But that doesn't mean you can't defend yourself.
Well, but what's the meaning of Life, if there isn't anyone to a killer to kill. And in Undertale, you die in the process
But killing is the only way to learn and experience more. The pacifist ending is made all the better by seeing the contrast in other actions you can perform.
Yeah, that's true, but I'm talking about doping this in the feeling part like: I kill just for fun! Get it
(
*?
The true message is be able to time travel and you'll always win.
But that's basically what you're doing when you die, reset, and reload.
I guess that message could be in almost every single game ever then.
And then you'll win and you'll win and you'll win, until you tire of this predictable world. What will you do then? =)
Play a different game.

Undertale has many meanings. What you said is true. I was always thinking about other representation of our lovely monsters. Because every monster in the umdergroumd can be attached to one of goals, that many of us, people, have.

And he doesn't give up, no matter what.

whatever route you choose, you still wanna know what would happen if you did it another way
Underlab: grab a spider cider and a cinnamon bunny
Me: I have a bandaid and a coffee. Does that count?
I interpret the message of the True Pacifist run as "Be the better person." Sure, you can't be friends with everyone and you can't resolve everything by being nice. But, as long as you don't let other people's horrible actions influence you, you won't be as horrible as they are. Just as Asriel says if you go back to the beginning during the ending of the game: "Be careful in the outside world, there are a lot of "Flowey's" out there and not everything can be resolved by just being nice."
Why do Frisk befriend only important people (and skelebros)?!
Thats why they are the important ones. Because they are the ones more interested in you.
Król Cieni Actually, you *DO* befriend the entirety of the Underground from the *FIGHTS* you encounter, though you see the main characters join you, implying the ones you befriended also joining in. From the end intro.
Well.. decept for the ones who dont join you..
A random user I mean ones with important role in the underground.
Król Cieni I'd say because you spent most time on them and they're important. But... they'll be whatever the plot demands them to be I guess.
As important member of the Underground they need (Friend or not) to be near the Human.
and two tears run down my cheek. one because of the video, another of sadness because king mel isn´t here yet.
I love the subtitles "hello and welcome back to on the lap
I don't think that I've ever cried over a video game so much.
Just because sans thinks keeping promises is good, despite him never making one, it doesn't mean its moral to not break a promise. It depends on the opportunity cost and new information.
Something to mention, you can complete the true pacifist route while attacking, just attack till the enemies are spareable
is it just me or does the intro continuously improve

By far, THIS is my favorite explanation video. I think you did a better job at explaining the message than anyone else!
Moral of the Pacifist Route: If you can save the world, do it.

For me, the only thing that's wrong with Flowey is that he exists.

2:28 I SEE YOU THERE, TOBY!!!
Ever consider how Alphys evacuates on the Genocide route but forgets to watch on the other routes...
The true meaning is,
WHOA TECHNOLOGY
Underlab you are the mat pat of undertale you really know how to change perspective this theory really stood out to me it really does feel good to be the better person even when someone doesn't deserve
I WILL NEVER DO GENOCIDE
being bullied makes people suffer and I only want those who want that to suffer
Pale Dragon please shut up. LOVE is baaaaaaaad
Pale Dragon no undertale remembers if you do genocide then pacifist it will be a bad ending still
Pale Dragon ya I delete all ur comments

Essam S FUCK U CATS ARE AWESOM
adriana hills i know o-o
Imagine if Sans worked for Monsters Inc... I'm not sure if he would be a better comedian, or a better scarer.
The message is
YOU DON'T DESERVE A HAPPY ENDING
Y'know? One reason I love Undertale is because of how ironic sans is: he likes joking around and likes puns, when really, he's just really depressed about how pointless his existence is, hence the reason why he likes sleeping. (Sleeping is a part of depression) and he likes jokes because it eases his mental pain.
Very, very interesting.
What If Asriel assumed Chara's plan had failed? As in he thought they weren't supposed to die.
So... Frisk is Spiderman?
Nathan Watt If Spiderman had the ability to reset the balance of time itself to his will, then yes.
Wheeth graet powr...

Frisk, the human that saves all monsterkind in the underground.
What about me?
I now have faith in humanity. Something I haven't had in a long time. I am glad I decided to watch this it made me feel something I haven't in years, HOPE.
Omg I'm first for once lol btw
CAN U DO THE TEM VID YET IVE BEEN WAITING FOR TWO MONTHS btw plz reply
Sorry 2 burst ur bubble, but ur not first...
I agreed, but I also thought maybe the point of the route was that everyone deserves forgiveness, no matter what.
As for the Genocide run, it is the exact opposite, preferably for grudge holders.
Nice vid
Personally i do agree with you but i think there's an even deeper meaning you can't save everyone because you can't save asriel but i also think that the meaning might be that to gain power you have to make sacrifices
So i have a theory so Gaster is a messed up sans wait but how do we have the normal one well what if sans used a clone machine so then after they did a experiment and then the first sans fell into their creation "the core " so then the first sans became corrupted and melted and became Gaster and that is my theory.
+mettaton the gaster theory is kind of already solved... just watch game theory. They made a 3 part series proving that sans and papyrus is gaster
Sans and Payrus ARE Gaster? Then how are they present in this world?
that's not quite how theories work? you sorta need evidence for these things.
Hopefully I summed it up all correctly without forgetting any important details.
who said i dont have evedience?
"Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility"
Was that Spiderman's Motto?
potato.
Wait, so killing multiple people across countless different timelines for no good reason wasn't wrong? Something sounds a bit off there.
If that's the case then stop arguing with me about a topic you clearly don't care about.
I think you should change back the intro but idc
Goatmom's maternal instincts are powerful. I know it's wrong of her to keep Frisk underground..but if I were Frisk, it wouldn't be in me to leave her. She's so lonely down there. D:
I like genocide...
Same i get a satisfaction of killing i get no satisfaction of sparing i want to be CEREAL killer when im older
The pacifrisk route of the game is just Toby's way of telling us that puns make us happier. (You don't get puns in geno)
My attempt at a pin.

Yes, Pineapple does belong on pizza.
Pin-apple Pizza LOLOLOL
At the end of the true pacifist route, a song called "Respite" plays, the definition of respite is: "a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant"
This is probably predicting that after true pacifist, the player will reset and do genocide, which is what happens in most case, I think that after pacifist, you should just set down the game, let the characters enjoy their happy ending, don't ruin it because you got bored
Or keep that save file find easter eggs and talk to ALL the monsters
I guess...I like genocide is better
*insert GASP face here*
wHHHHYYYYYY WOULD YOU KILL PAPYRUS?
Alissa Andry because he sucks
agreed
I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING!!! So it says they need at least 7 human souls right?!? The word Barrier has 7 letters in it! Is that a coincidence???!
Im Gay
Theory idea: "Are Toriel and Grillbz related?" They both use fire magic, after all.
Well hey your mother must be pretty stupid if she gave birth to a douche like you.
ok thats good to know ;)
