Yeah it's q, well known fact that no song is 100% original anymore because it's literally impossible. There's just not enough notes, melodies and chords to allow it.
Honestly, after 100 years or so of recording music, and the finite number of rhyming words, there's bound to be some that overlap, even if the artists had never heard each other before. 🤷♀️ Loving this series, guys!!
Loved the comparisons. (I might have done the reverse though...put the 'original' first. Then, see if the other song is close....the way my brain works..haha!). THANKS for the great content guys!:D
Nope, it's better the way it is. Because for the more obscure "original" versions many people might not recognize what the popular counterpart is supposed to be, or what little part of it they should be focused on, that was supposedly copied. Playing the copy first, people will first remember the newer song and what it exactly sounds like, then get a chance to listen to the often unknown original and search for themselves if they find any major or sometimes some very minor, but specific similarities between them. In short. It's good to know what you are gonna be searching for, before you are going to listen to a track that you've never heard before.
@@Renee_R343 Idk but I think it’s better to hear the original then hear the copy to see IF we hear anything copied rather than being told exactly what to look for. Like it would be better for deciding if we hear anything or not if we’re not told exactly which part to listen for but to just see if we can hear any copied part from any of it. since this video does seem to be about deciding IF it’s there before being told if it definitely is or not anyway.
I have another one. Fall Out Boy's "I don't care" and Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the sky". The songs are pretty different overall, but they have a really similar guitar in the very beginning of the song.
Reacting to music by yourself is and was awesome. But finding awesome friends to react to it with 1000% better. Proud of this content evolution! 😀😂😎. Loving the consistent addition of August and Jonas 👏
7:10 there was a rapper called e-dubble who frequently sample loads of songs in phenomenal ways, one of which uses this Tom Petty song, he was always transparent about samples, getting permission for some that he could like another song called Radio, and it worked so well for his freestyle Friday project where he released a song every Friday for a year, anyone into rap, especially anyone who knows American music from the 90s, id highly recommend his stuff, unfortunately he’s not around anymore after he dies quite young, but an incredibly skilled artist
I love this series! Sounds that sound alike have long been a source of fascination for me. I even did a project on it in college over 20 years ago. If you haven't already, please look into "Ventura Highway" by America vs. "Someone to Call My Lover" by Janet Jackson, and "The Needle and the Damage Done" by Neil Young vs. "Who Will Save Your Soul" by Jewel.
Wow, they're literally just the same chord progression played in full notes with a quarter note delay. I wouldn't say that's enough to constitute a copy. It's too basic a melody.
Dani California and Mary Jane’s last dance have different chord progressions and different melodies. The chord progression both starts on the I, then move to the maj VII, but then they deviate with Red Hot Chili Peppers using the minor IV chord whereas Tom petty uses the major IV chord. After that they both resolve to the tonic but second time around, Tom Petty’s song utilizes the d7sus4 chord whereas rhcp start with the same chord loop as they did before. They are not the same.
I've got one for you that was heard about in the '80's. Original, Falco "Der Commissar" Cover, Laura Branigan "Deep In The Dark" Laura Branigan was the Queen of the Cover. She either covered a song, or had one of her's covered by someone else (ex. Cher, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, and Alphaville, to name a few).
Olivia Rodrigo also used interpolated the piano on Taylor Swift’s New Year’s Day for her song "1 step forward, 3 steps back" with Swift’s permission. ☺️
Best Song Ever doesn't use the same chords as Baba O Reily, it's just a clear homage to the song. I really don't get how music fans could say one's a copy.
Plz compare "OMD - Sailing On The Seven Seas" and "Lena Philipsson - Han Jobbar I Affär" by Anders Hansson and Orup. It is almost a cover ;) They even have the same enhasment in the riff in the beginning of the second verse. OMS Time: 1.31, Lena Time:1:21.
I do think it's so wholesome when two musicians realize a similarity and resolve it outside of court with a mash up or honorary credit or attribution, etc. There's too many money grubbers out there who think they were the only one to ever use a certain chord progression or rhythm.
Joel, Jonas, and August love seeing the three of you letting us in your commentary. Joel, you work too hard....the Mike can't keep up. Thank you all, the mash ups are really good. Agree with the copy vote especially the Olly Trainor one...common 60's beat.
one I don't know if you've done yet is Superfreak by Rick James and U Can't Touch This by MCHammer they are actually the same for real, same chords, in the same exact rhythm. The only difference is that the volume is more intense in Superfreak. Superfreak- 1981 U Can't Touch This- 1990
A comparison I've never known of anyone else noticing: Lou Christie - I'm Gonna Make You Mine (1969) vs the Mentos jingle (1991). Similar melody in the verse/pre-chorus. And then not a copy but a similar vibe: Kool & The Gang - Joanna (1983) vs Wham! - Last Christmas (1984). Similar chord progression on staccato quarter notes. Interestingly, George Michael was instead sued for copying Barry Manilow's Can't Smile Without You (1977), which was previously recorded by David Martin in 1975 and sounds nothing like Last Christmas.
I have some suggestions for the next video of this series (hope you do more lol) - good 4 you from Olivia Rodrigo sounds a lot like misery business - feed from Demi Lovato reminds me a lot of You and I from Lady Gaga in the verses - we used to shine from James Bay reminds me a lot of the one that got away from Katy Perry in the chorus
For Tay and Liv you should've have done Olivia Rodrigo's 1 step forward 3 steps back and Taylor Swift's New year's day, ok but she did get permission to use the riff though
One tat always comes to mind and I don't see too many people covering this is Mickey by Toni Basil (1981) and Kitty by Racey (1979). They literally changed the words around and changed her to he.
6:45 I've have literally always loved both Last Dance With MaryJane and Dani California, since each of them came out... and I have never noticed even a slight similarity in them... until now. .... Damnit.
Suggestions of songs for a part 9: Lucky Strike by Maroon 5 vs Honey by Big Time Rush and Lose You to Love Me by Selena Gomez vs Take it Out On Me by Onerepublic 😀
This video is so funny to me because I thought the Juice Wrld song sounded like an exact copy whereas the One Direction song sounded nothing like the Baby O'Riley song. It's amazing how our ears interpret different sounds.
These aren’t direct copies by any means, but for my Swifties out there, Dancing with our Hands Tied sounds super similar to Blinding Lights by The Weekend. It’d make a sick mashup.
To be fair, Olly Murs and Meghan Trainor's songs sound very familiar to "Runaround Sue" by Dion. I would like to see a video with that in it! Love you guys 💕
ANYWAY, Juice World was a Big Fan of *Yellowcard* He grew up with a lot Pop Punk and EMO Bands, well yeah, i still see a Reference from all of that Music's..
I really like how roomie is posting multiple vids instead of posting Videos he spent weeks on every month or so. love you roomie. Can't believe i've been watching you for like 6 or so years
Another possible plagiarism: Lana Del Rey- Love >>> Natalia Lafourcade - El Amor Acaba (Guitar chords). Lana Del Rey - California >>> Pambo - Perdón. (Piano chords)
I know Joel isn't big on rap and I think its safe to assume some of his viewers won't be either there is one thing to note on Juice Wrld's song Lucid Dreams. Yellowcard did sue Juice Wrld for the similarities but ultimately dropped the case after he passed. Also Sting owns 85% of Lucid Dreams because of the interpolation. Kinda wild
Came across one of these by accident and hope you cover it in a future installment of this series - "Chained to the Rhythm" by Katy Perry and "Magic" by Kylie Minogue
Plzzz do an actor’s vs RUclipsrs video ( RUclips as in Vlogers and things like that) So we can see weather actors are better at singing that RUclipsrs or the other way around
For the next one you could compare the chorus of “Elas decidem” from Fernando e Sorocaba (Brazilian “country” singers) and “Come back home” from Sophia Carson. 😂
The whole concept of Dani was who Kiedis would create in ones mind, an apect of the culture and where one may be grounded in it, never feeling to alone, but seeing eventually it's destruction, being that Kiedis finds ones destiny is to lose Dani. Other songs that speak about Dani are By The Way literally saying "I'd be there waiting for, Dani the girl". The entire song Scar Tissue is just about sharing a view with Dani to make it feel less lonely as to help aide the "Scar Tissue". Californication referenced Dani every time a girl was brought up, "Little girls in Sweeden", "Marry me girl and be my only" and "Earthqaukes are but to a girls guitar, just another good vibration", referring to what Dani wanted that was too much that Kiedis felt to satisfy, and saw as a destruction. All this loneliness is ways of referring to real life events of Kiedis life such as the struggle with heroin addiction, and the addiction caused loss of Hillel Slovak and having Irons leave the band after such. It was alot of pains. And Kiedis didn't quit the heroin right away. The young man was in so much pain, but felt oneself couldn't escape, but later on went to therapy and even visit Slovaks grave as a clean man, and since the year 2000, Kiedis has only taken time to improve oneself, and also wrote Under The Bridge to sing about the fight with addiction in the lyrics of "I don't want to ever feel like I did that day, but take me to the place I love, take me all the way". Kiedis had been through alot of pains, and still struggles with emotions like the rest of us, but only aims to improve ones own life.
I don't know what I was expecting to hear on that very last rap (that said Katy Perry copied them), but it wasn't "I've been a Christian for a few years" lmao
Red Hot Chili Peppers' Dani California, Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers' Mary Jane's Last Dance, and Tim McGrow's Let it Go use exactly the same chords and arrangements.
Figured I'd mention again for a possible future video that the chorus to Lostprophet's "Can't Stop, Gotta Date With Hate" (2006) sounds identical to All American Rejects' "I'm Waiting" (2005).
Roomie reacting to things by himself is great but with August and Jonas it's even better.
yeah Joel by himself is not good enough (to everyone whose gonna come for me in the replys, ITS A JOKEEE)
No
Honestly I don’t really like them
yeah, with them, joel seems more genuine. and it's fun to see different opinions and their debates
frrr
I really wanna hear more of August singing as he seems like he's got a great voice. Does he have his own channel at all??
Same. I like his voice too.
Yep! He has his own channel!
Troo dudes voice is so good
@@dianab3503 well then what is it
you could listen to some of there making the most relaxing songs, at the end you can here his song.
finally a taylor swift song on your channel that isn't blank space or shake it off (and it's THE cruel summer!!) 😂 love your vids as usual!!
Underrated comment😌
yessss
One of my favorite tay tay song 🎵
Yessss
No body, no crime PLEASE
I love the way this channel does their intro, like, almost 4 minutes into the video, so different to most channels
There will come a point in music history, were there is no possible way to NOT copy another song. We are not there just yet though.
honestly true tho
Facts
Yeah it's q, well known fact that no song is 100% original anymore because it's literally impossible. There's just not enough notes, melodies and chords to allow it.
Every current rap song ever, all them mf sound the same, the same shitty beat, the same shitty Rhythm and the same shitty lyrics
Then, the 8th note would be created
Honestly, after 100 years or so of recording music, and the finite number of rhyming words, there's bound to be some that overlap, even if the artists had never heard each other before. 🤷♀️
Loving this series, guys!!
I find it funny that FLAME's was labeled "Copy?" and Katy Perry's was "Original".
Same

Not sure if you covered it before but a big one that always fascinated me was when Drake allegedly copied xxxtentacion. Was something else bro
@Don't Read My Profile Photo Don't worry I won't
I know he took Soulja's lyrics a couple times
Reacting to music by yourself is and was awesome. But finding awesome friends to react to it with 1000% better. Proud of this content evolution! 😀😂😎. Loving the consistent addition of August and Jonas 👏

RIP a true legend. I love evans music and he had a big impact on my life. Another good person gone too soon
You guys replaced Roomie with a robot for this video. Did you think that we wouldn't notice?
The real Roomie died in 1977
W-What?
Both Ollie Murs and Meghan Trainer are using Runaround Sue. In fact, they even sing a mishmash on The Voice UK where they openly acknowledge this.
I love this series! Sounds that sound alike have long been a source of fascination for me. I even did a project on it in college over 20 years ago. Original: World's Apart by The Mostar Diving Club (first 16 secs)
Copy: One More Light by Linkin Park
Im obsessed with this 2 coz i love both songs!!!
Wow, they're literally just the same chord progression played in full notes with a quarter note delay.
I wouldn't say that's enough to constitute a copy. It's too basic a melody.
is Joel sounding like a robot?
yes he is

yeah, he needs a new mic
he just had his autotune on

😧Lil Pitchy, Roomie sir I miss when you'd overlay the tracks so I could see if it's identical. It was my favorite part.

They were all influenced by Bread song Frreedom in 1971.
Mother Freedom by Bread
I love both those songs I always heard the similarities but it’s not a copy
I've got one for you that was heard about in the '80's.
Original, Falco "Der Commissar"
Cover, Laura Branigan "Deep In The Dark"
Laura Branigan was the Queen of the Cover. She either covered a song, or had one of her's covered by someone else (ex. Cher, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, and Alphaville, to name a few).
I legit was about to comment it sounds like Olivia was heavily inspired cause she is a Swiftie. Then Joel started reading the thing at 4:18
I think by 2022, so much has been done in music, that it's hard to not have songs sound similar.
Yess
I love how they used animal crossing sounds when someone swears
I’m sorry but my mind is not allowing me to believe Dancing with a Stranger isnt an original song
I feel like the only thing similar to "Cruel Summer" in "Deja Vu" is the yelling vocals.
Olivia Rodrigo also used interpolated the piano on Taylor Swift’s New Year’s Day for her song "1 step forward, 3 steps back" with Swift’s permission. ☺️
Speaking of One Direction- they also did _'Midnight Memories',_ which sounds like the '80s hard rock classic _'Pour Some Sugar On Me'._ 💁🏿♂️
Through the fire and the flames also has a very similar up and down pattern as the first one although slightly faster
Déjà vu being a copy of something makes perfect sense because it’s in line with the title
I definitely thought he would compare Taylor’s New Year’s Day and Olivia’s one step forward, three steps back
I think that would be considered interpolation more than copying, not sure though!
Taylor did get credited for that one
That is literally sampled
I need you guys to check out AURORA's verse on "Heathens" and how it's at least inspired by Lorde's pre-chorus on "Buzzcut season"

There's another Olivia song that has a little bit of new years day I believe by Taylor to but I forgot what song it is
No ones gonna talk about the drawings on jonas's wall 😂
He works out of a shed in the garden. The drawings are his girlfriend's. She studied to be a veterinary assistant.
one I don't know if you've done yet is Superfreak by Rick James and U Can't Touch This by MCHammer
they are actually the same for real, same chords, in the same exact rhythm. The only difference is that the volume is more intense in Superfreak.
Superfreak- 1981
U Can't Touch This- 1990
That’s just an actual sample
tbh most old school reggaeton songs use samples from other songs for the beats, add a base to it and go with that
A comparison I've never known of anyone else noticing:
Lou Christie - I'm Gonna Make You Mine (1969) vs the Mentos jingle (1991). Similar melody in the verse/pre-chorus.

- we used to shine from James Bay reminds me a lot of the one that got away from Katy Perry in the chorus
The editors have made so many mistakes recently 😂
11:40: This is the original and ‘dark horse’ is the copy

"OH MY GOD IM GOING!!" had such gru energy im loving it
Lil Nas X- Sun Goes Down and Ian Dior- Holding On sound the exact same bro. It’s crazy because they both came out around the same time.
The beginning of Orinoco Flow by Enya sounds a lot like the beginning of Can't Get Used to Losing You by Andy Williams.
These aren’t direct copies by any means, but for my Swifties out there, Dancing with our Hands Tied sounds super similar to Blinding Lights by The Weekend. It’d make a sick mashup.

😂😂😂 I missed that the first time until seeing your comment. Looks like a lot of others did too. So funny tho. Lol
got to love the not so subtle plugs for Lil Pitchy's song in each video
I remember the Dark Horse lawsuit since I like Flame and Lecrae. I'm actually wearing one of my Lecrae shirts as I'm watching this🤣
Plzzz do an actor’s vs RUclipsrs video ( RUclips as in Vlogers and things like that)
So we can see weather actors are better at singing that RUclipsrs or the other way around
For the next one you could compare the chorus of “Elas decidem” from Fernando e Sorocaba (Brazilian “country” singers) and “Come back home” from Sophia Carson. 😂
Also “Mulheres” from Martinho da Vila (Brazilian samba) and “Million years ago” from Adele.

You should look at "123" by Craig Smart and it's similarities to Bruno's "Just the way you are" it might be the worst copy I've heard
I luv his videos w/ August and Jonas it’s so funny 😂

You should do BTS “Butter” and Kazoo “Don’t go”
Great video as always.
olivia used also the melody of new years day ( taylor swift) to her song i step foward 3 steps back, but she put the credits too
The RHCP song Dani California is also similar to Sweet Home Alabama.
Figured I'd mention again for a possible future video that the chorus to Lostprophet's "Can't Stop, Gotta Date With Hate" (2006) sounds identical to All American Rejects' "I'm Waiting" (2005).
