  • Driver vs Driving Iron - ON COURSE SCORING BATTLE! We all love smashing long drives out on the golf course, but sometimes is it better to just play it safe and hit a driving iron? in this video I put the theory to see if you score better by hitting long drives off the tee or by playing safe using a driving iron... the clubs I'm using are the Tayormade Sim Driver and The Taylormade P790 UDI... which would you choose? lets do it... and lets do it now!

    I always tend to talk myself out of playing my 4iron off the tee(4 is my longest iron) but honestly I will adotpt this strategy for the rest of the season. My driver actually broke a week ago, so perfect reason to start.

    As a recreational player, I'd say it all comes down to how you're hitting the driver. During a time in the early 2000s, I couldn't keep a ball hit with a Driver on the planet, and carried a PRGR 200i 17* hybrid, that was flat-faced, not ^that* much mass behind the face. I could hit it as far, if not longer, than the driver, and it kept me in play. It cost as much as some of the drivers of the day, and I recently put it back in the bag, as these "driving-iron clubs" seem to make better lay-up clubs than the more mini-wood-looking hybrids do, at least for me.

    Not boring at all - good video and commentary. I played in a competitive league for the first time this year, and the best lesson learned was to keep the driver in the bag on any hole that wasn't an obvious "driver hole". Thanks James!

    I stayed. :) I just purchased a 2019 TM 790 2 UDI. I also have a 2019 TM 790 3i. As a high handicapper; I'm not consistent enough to actually play with these but I wanted to get better at irons..so in the bag they go on training days. Maybe one day I'll be good enough to slide them in for a game. Thanks for making your videos. Always a pleasure to watch them.

    I stuck with you, until the final hole! Great point that you have to be able to hit every club THAT’S IN YOUR BAG. Otherwise there’s no point in carrying it. Then it’s just extra weight to haul around. There are SO many options now - mini driver, UDI, 5 & 7 woods, all kinds of hybrids, wedges in every loft from 45 to 64 degrees - that you have to figure out what works for YOU and what makes the game most enjoyable. And thanks for showing your divot replacements and ball mark repairs. I get lazy on that at times, but seeing your good example reminds me I have to do better at doing my part to take care of the courses I play at.

    I think it does not matter what you take off the tee, the second shot is the deciding factor. If the approach shot is offline, short, long, etc, you will always scramble to get up and down for par, or bogey.

    I stayed till the end and learned that if I could strike the ball like James, it wouldn't really matter which one I used either. I cant however, so I use my driver which is the most consistent club in my bag.

    I have played driving iron only during the first year and a half of competition play, it got me to around 10 hcp. But then I really started missing the extra yardages a driver has on offer. So I bought one and really felt the difference in competition when I struck it well.

I recently had my 1st lesson changed my takeaway & path gained 20 yards per club straight away. Don't get me wrong I'm practicing like mad get it to feel normal but I'm very excited for the next lesson and the new season. I recommend lessons with a good pro over buying new gear. Great content as always 👍⛳

    Stuck around until the end, but what you need to do is look at percentage play. There are holes where I could, with a well played driver, hit the green that I hit 4 Iron off the tee because it’s about consistent positioning, and minimising the risk of bogey.

  • @larrystark9141
    @larrystark9141 4 года назад +2

    Thank you James. I have been thinking, for a few years now, that I should have a driving Iron as I might hit it better. I think you would have been about Pin High with the two driver iron shots on the 18th, or possibly just rolled off the green. I struggle so much with a driver that I will hit a 3 wood or a 3 iron depending on which one I'm hitting best that particular day. BTW Lessons this past year with a Pro didn't help me much with the driver either. I just wish I knew someone with one that I could try on the course as playing with them in a facility with the cameras it didn't do much for me, maybe 5 to 10 yards was all.

    I stuck with you, and nice save for par with the driving iron ball!!
    I don't have a driving iron, but use my hybrid off the tee if I need to play ultra safe, I feel very confident with it, about 195/205 yards.
    Yes, the 18th at Woolley is a great finishing hole, it's a tight approach depending on where your drive lands and where the pin is. Also, it's a killer on a late winter afternoon if the sun is ever out, it's low and right into you; as soon as you look up after you've hit your shot, you're blinded!!

  • @oldmangolf4209
    @oldmangolf4209 4 года назад +2

    I stuck with you to the final hole. I’d say that if you’re more confident with one over the other that’s where your focus would be. For me it’s my 4 iron whenever my woods/driver let me down.

  • @larryd4352
    @larryd4352 4 года назад

    I watched the whole video. It was not boring at all. The wedge shot on the last hole was very well played!
    Back in my younger days, I never thought about laying up off the tee for a short Par 4 ( a short Par 4 for me back then was anything under 360 yards. ) As I got older, I started thinking more about course management....and learned to hit a 5 or 7 wood off the tee to set up my second shot....usually about 110 yards...so I could hit my Gap Wedge.
    Now...that doesn't mean I didn't pull out my driver and try to drive a green on a shorter Par 4...I learned to do it when the conditions were right.
    At 62 years old now...I am all about course management. I can't hit a driver over 300 yards anymore....so I don't even carry one now. Just my Cobra 5 wood, and a 3 & 4 Hybrid plus 6-PW irons...Gap, Sand, & Lob Wedges. My putter is my 45 year old Achusnet Bullseye blade!

    James, great video. I stuck with you. If you ask me (and I’m a terrible golfer), it seems that a 1 iron has a place in your bag if you are a consistent striker but your distance is short. So if you hit your driver with roll like 240 or shorter, but you hit irons well, then you could see yourself with a long second shot. Or, on some shorter par 4’s where your drive is too far for the pin or dogleg but the 1i is just the right distance. But if you’re hitting your driver say 265 or higher, then maybe a 1i isn’t for you because you’d most likely be a 7i out on those longer holes for shot 2.
    So in summary, two factors: are you a consistent striker? Are your drives 240 or so?

I try to play a full shot to the green so the 70 yard shot left with a driver would be tougher than a 110 or even 125 yard shot for me. I’ve found that FIR matters over the 30-40 yards you gain(potentially) from a driver, because for me, and most other guys I play with, that extra 30-40 yards is generally in a direction that’s not the green anyway. If I have to take a 9 iron into the green instead of a wedge, that’s not such a big deal, as I am accurate with my short irons.

    Well, that was fun. I have the 2 UDI and love it. One thing about this that you don't take into consideration. The yardage difference between the 2 and the driver. I can hit my 2 about 30 yards short of my driver. For me, that's not much of a difference for my approach shot. For another golfer, who hits a 300 yard drive vs a 225 yard 2 iron, the difference between clubs for the 2nd shot becomes significant. Also, I can work my 2 better than I can my driver. And it's fun to hit!! LOL!! JM2C

    I stuck with you. Don't use a driving iron, but love my driver

    Nice grouping of pars. I don't think they're boring, either. I could use more of them!

    Driving iron or 3 wood trumps my driver all day long ,more than willing to give up 20 or 30 yards to my playing partner to stay on the fairway ,sometimes it's only 5 yards of a difference. Driver costs me 6 strokes a round so I only use it on wide open holes .ball flight off a driving iron is also very satisfying and if playing links gives me an excellent roll out

    I stuck with you. I often hit less than driver on shorter par 4 or tight fairways.

    Have been thinking about this but not confident in the 2 iron. First step is de-loft the 3 hybrid to 17 degree and put a 3 iron in the gap between this and my 4 iron. Removed the 3 wood from my bag
