Rolex lied, none of their watches made it to the summit of Everest(They wore Smiths). They didn't produce the first automatic watch(Harwood did...Hans Wilsdorf finally made a public apology to Harwood 30 years later).. They didn't produce the first waterproof watch either(There were several before them) and the woman didn't complete the swim across the channel either.
The original Abercrombie was a department store in the 40’s near Grand Central Station in NYC that specialized in rugged outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and even extreme exploration. It did carry clothing and other items (for men only, I believe) and was considered to be a very high end supplier of these items. It does not surprise me that they carried their own version of Rolex. Bob Lee’s Hunting World was a nearby competitor and specialized in hunting safari outfitting and, it too, carried its own branded watches.
Prior to the 369 dial Explorer that we all know and love today, the Explorer marked dials were in a standard Oyster case with standard hour indexes and standard hands and was primarily only offered in the Canadian market, decades before the 5700 reference. They do pop up from time to time and besides prime examples with waffle dials and the occasional 36912 dial, Unfortunately most sell for very little money due to their dull and boring styling and small size.
Great video Nico, just a question, isn’t the last REF in your video named the Rolex Texan which also is in the Rolex Quartz line? All respect and love.
More obscure watches should be appreciated by the watch community, theres beauty in the unheard and unseen after all! Thats why i find vintage watches so appealing
With a vintage watch you know you have a piece you can talk about without having the same story as every other nouveau riche 😂 besides they tend to be more beautiful, especially if they have signs of being used.
very cool watch (best parts of a sub's utility + datejust wearability!) but as they made these clear through the early 2000s (6 digit references exist) I'm not sure it will qualify as an unknown reference!
I wish you could do (if you have not yet) a breakdown of criteria what makes a watch amazing/bollocks. For example Rolex is well known around the world, yet they seem to be cheaper than Richard Mille ones, the latter being less known.
That could be supply. Rolex is more mass production. Less watches in the market tend to drive prices up. Especially if there is brilliant marketing behind it. And RM marketing is even better than Rolex.
The RUclipsr,London watch collecter has some unique/rare rolex he hasn't revealed it but always say it'll blow your mind please react to it whenever he reveals it
For your next list, Rolex 1831 known as The King of Day Dates. This watches were made in 1970s by special order of Shah of Iran. Only 9 of em ever made, all were made with platinum and the watch weight is 290 grams, i believe this is the heaviest rolex ever, beautiful watch, search about it
Did I now about the: Air Explorer: Yes Air Lion: Yes Air Giant: Yes Air Tiger: No Commando: No Tru-Beat: Yes.This is not a hard to have heard about watch. Find, yes but not to have heard of. 5100: No. Also for the children... Before A&F moved into malls across America and started selling jeans and cologne. They were known as an ACTUAL outfitter. It was working and exploring wear. Not hanging out with your hands on your hips wear.
The Texano is so so rare... and i only knew about it earlier this year.. very unique n this is my fave on this video... there are few more rare Rolex models which are not mentioned on this video, lets wait for the next one..cant wait..😅🫡🤗
Hi Nico! There's a Tru Beat for sale on Chrono 24 now, it costs EUR 24k without papers nor boxes. Would you consider it as an investment even like that?
Nico, what are your thoughts on the Everose Day-Date with the chocolate dial and baguette rubies (118135)? It's not quite a "grail" piece for me, but it's up there.
I like tru beat, I've also seen a giant for sale for about £3k a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was fake as I'd never heard of it before but I may go back and see if it's still there. If I could get someone to check it and authenticate it I'd deffo but it.
next talk about rolex dream ocean. Use by navy of ww 2 to search and rescue and later adopted by pilot and geologist to locate mummies also dream ocean 2 pro use by explorer to hunt sea lion and penguin. note that it is extremely very very rare to found, with only 12 ever made, with 10 of them explode because of over used and over exposed to gamma x ray if in good condition can reach about 150,000 or more.
Careful with those tru-beats.Those dead beat movements were very difficult to service, so they were often replaced with more standard OP movements. Hard to find and still hard to service. And almost no one wants a 34 mm watch. Cool in photos, but unless you are curating a museum, this is a pass…
before watching: king midas, bubbleback, that dual time cellini with the clear caseback, that texas beta-21 superquartz megafucker one, and idk maybe a pocket watch or the original seadweller prototype thing with the giant crystal edit: well i got the 5100 anyway, adding that he'll probably tell us about the datejust "rarebird" (1530?)-an automatic datejust in an oysterquartz case
I'd love to see you take a deep dive into Jaeger-LeCoultre, or Vacheron Constantin... Personally, I think they're lightyears ahead of Rolex... But obviously still not as good as Casio. 😉
Well, it's ambiguous if a Rolex ever made it atop Everest in 1953 and it's likely that Hillary and Tenzing Norgay only wore Smiths watches when they reached the summit.

Fun fact: the name originally was 'eve rest'.
Someone sounds bitter 😂
@@muds1123 Bitter about what?
@@muds1123someone sounds dull..
Why are so many watch folks so angry, it's a freaking hobby not brain surgery
Thumbs up if you think Nico should be doing more videos like this one! Let's show Nico what content we actually want.
