My Kind-Hearted Boy: A Native American Style Drone Flute plays Lakota Lullaby

- Čhanté Wašté Hokšíla is a traditional Lakota lullaby, here played on a drone flute. The earliest recording I’ve found is sung and played on the Native American flute by Robert Tree Cody. For my own interpretation I used a recent transcription by Linthicum Blackhorse, Lakota composer and music historian. I changed the endings to the second and third chorus to accommodate the Native American Style drone, which unlike a silver flute does not go much beyond an octave in range. I also used the emphasis marks in the score to add such Plains-style embellishments as the chirps at the end of each chorus. The score is in 6/8 time, a rolling, swung meter similar to a waltz beat.
The flute is a Guillermo Martinez 432 hz Maya drone in C# minor. The photos are from Canyonlands National Park, except for the picture of a California Condor in Grand Canyon National Park.
Here is Linthicum Blackhorse’s research and score for Čhanté Wašté Hokšíla:

It took a kind-hearted friend and a little research to find this lullaby. I must go back to the well occasionally and this is a fine well.
