  • Doug DeMuro recently reviewed the NC Miata, so I reviewed his review. There are a number of details he got wrong, so I correct them but also shine light on why it's not surprising, and even acceptable. Journalism is hard!

    The NC is ugly?! I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has commented, "what a beautiful car", or , "nice car". Ugly it is not. I chose the NC1, because I prefer the look to the ND. It just looks like a classic roadster. The ND looks like it's trying to be a mini Corvette. I recently installed the FM Stage-2 suspension kit. Now the handling is what it should have been from the factory. I've got the Copper Mica Red Touring soft-top. I love this car. It's the most enjoyable driving car, I have ever had.

      Same. Most of the judgement regarding the NC is from people who a) Haven't driven one or B) Aren't standing in front of one (Doug notwithstanding)

      I do think my NB1 was a better looking car, but the looks of my NC1 have really grown on me and the NC is a far superior car. I love my Miata and actually own my dream car! I also much prefer the NC’s look to the ND’s. I’m not a fan of what Mazda did to the styling of the ND.

    • @dcvroom

      @@dff19707 I actually have both., though my NB is a 2001. I too like the looks of the NB, esp from the 3/4 rear where it has that mini-Viper vibe, but my NC1 has really grown on me. It helps that it is lowered using Ohlins and the street wheels are 17x8s with 225's. What really looks stellar are the 17x9s, +35 w/235s in track config. emphasizes the more aggressive character. Shockingly, I find myself driving the NC more, though the turbo, etc makes the NB a bit of a handful (in a good way). Regardless, the NC is its own awesome kind of car. Agree on the ND, though I'd like to have one of them too! 😂 Need to collect them all!

    The silver lining is, a journalist will never know a car as well as the owner because they don't have enough time with it until it's onto the next one, and there may be cars that he just doesn't like but still has to put on a show for. This car is special to us but to him it's probably just another dot in the Doug chart.

    There are a few things I would add... the top trim on the NC2 and NC3 was the GT with Premium package (almost the same spec as the SE) got everything the Club got plus all the regular GT options and AKE. The Premium package with a manual came with Suspension package as standard equipment. These are the most desirable ones right now, and they are typically priced higher than ND1s. Velocity Red is the same red as the MSM. I am not aware of fake wood coming from Mazda, it was probably a dealer installed thing. The cubbies for the PRHT are taken up by the roof motor on the driver side and the Bose amp on the passenger side. Every NC I have owned (three of them) had the fix-a-flat bottle in it, and it was standard equipment. A lot of cars don't have it now because the stuff expires after 8-10 years. And if you really wanna talk about rare NCs, the Competition Yellow PRHT (Canada only) is your bet. I think there was around 100. Our SEs are rarer than a Club and better equipped.

    • @tommc3622
      @tommc3622 Месяц назад +1

      The fake wood dash is/was a genuine Mazda part.
      It was a dealer installed option and was available through Mazda parts. I have one in my NC1.
      There was also a matching set of fake wood inserts for around the lock/mirror switches in the door.

  • @linkuhndave
    @linkuhndave 3 месяца назад +3

    I ordered the wood dash insert when I ordered my 2013 GT. It was installed by the dealer before I picked it up.
    Also the bottle of "tire goop" is contained in the zippered case with the compressor and hose to gt the goop in the tire. Also contains a WARNING sticker that is to be placed on the steering wheel, reminding the driver to get that tire properly repaired.

    Perhaps I'm hyper sensitive on the subject as an NC3 PRHT owner, but It looked fairly clear to me that Doug was highly influenced by what others have said about the NC. He basically said that it's a better car than you may think, even if it's not as good a car as the NA or NB. Whaaaaaa????

  • @djf7380
    @djf7380 3 месяца назад +9

    I have a 2012 Grand Touring PRHT. My car came with the tire "fix-a-flat" bottle. It was actually inside the case with the inflator and not sitting next to it like in Doug's video. They are all expired by now so I removed it and put some tire plugs and tools in its place.

  • @demon1954
    @demon1954 3 месяца назад +2

    Many good points well made.
    For background I've owned nothing but MX5s for the last 20 years. Many NAs and NBs, four NCs, and then NDs as company cars. Perhaps worth noting that I've never yet considered having an ND with my own money.
    Further info to potentially consider for completeness .......
    Pretty sure they stopped making NC at the end of 2014 because demand had dropped off Everest and down to the deepest part of the ocean. For instance, of the '14 built cars that were sold in '15 in Australia (all 25AEs) apparently I personally sold more of them than any other 10 dealers put together. I sold a whole 6 cars.
    Mazdaspeed (SE/NB8C in Australia) was a hardly disguised exercise in using up parts that would otherwise be binned such as the non VVT engine. It was also deliberately loaded with every extra item of equipment and unnecessarily large and heavy Racing Hart wheels in an attempt to make the NC look not too much heavier than NB8B. It had the world's most useless IHI turbo (and an evilly designed oil return pipe) so Mazda could say "look - our new non-turbo car is nearly as fast as our old turbo one!". Dealers were asked to turn the boost down from 8psi to 6psi at pre-delivery inspection to preserve the rods. The marketers even said it had less turns from lock to lock to give the impression it had a quick rack. But all they actually did was to increase the turning circle! Thank goodness the fire stopped them building too many of them. I fixed mine by building the engine, adding a 2871, sorting the suspension and brakes and going back to 15x8s. This made it a decent car.
    Who cares about the loss of two small storage spaces when the PRHT is just so useful (and so much better than the RF)?
    Open ventilation mode with lots of fan speed seems to do a decent job of creating positive air pressure in the cabin thus reducing the amount of air (and snow - really!) coming back into the car behind your neck.
    NC cupholders in the door are in a dangerous place for the driver to use, so I use the one in the centre console and have a 3" extension on the gear lever so my coffee cup doesn't get in the way. There's a short shifter kit under the lever so the movement is the same as standard and feels even more satisfying.. I'm actually considering buzzing the cupholder off the door panel because some of my guest drivers with longer legs complain it hits their knee.
    Of the four NCs I've owned (all PRHTs), one was an extremely boring standard car, then a more interesting BBR200, then a very interesting BBR300 stage two turbo 25AE in Soul Red and now a stripped out 80% track car with just breathing and suspension mods with maybe only 170-180hp. The 300 was the best all-round car I've owned. The conversion was really well done - so good that the 2860 turbo was almost silent and it drove like a well-sorted 3.7L V6. And only used the same amount of fuel as the other NCs.
    But I still have a massive soft spot for my supercharged '92 V-special in BRG with tan leather.

    I have a '12 prht GT with the automatic transmission (I have a bad knee that makes driving a manual difficult). A couple of people at work thought it was a Ferrari, and I always get compliments on it in traffic, so I don't think it qualifies as ugly.

      My story too!
      My 03’ manual was used on my horse ranch in Yosemite as well and sold her w/224k on her- original clutch too.
      I played competitive tennis plus horse riding so my hip is shot. I was worried the sports car Gods would be upset with me when I picked up this pristine 1 owner 13’ prht in a/t.
      Def not the same tho paddles make it fun & rarely used but now I can drink a cup of coffee in stop n go traffic here in sf.

    They were very rare. It's not awful by any means. I like it. But it is quite dark. I had my tire inflation bottle also.
    ...
    One club specific bit that many are unaware of (and that I'm trying to find...if anyone has one...) is the cluster hood that tops the gauges.
    The club got a shorter hood that gives a better sight line.

    This video caught my interest and started viewing your other videos. The comment on the last year for the NC Miata is also interesting. My 2015 NC identifies 9/14 manufacture date on nameplate, and I purchased it 11/14. Not sure why it is considered 2015 model, I wonder? I purchased the NC Miata once the preview of the ND came out...."super ugly". The ND just totally departed from the classic look of the first-generation Miata. I just did not like the streamline of the ND. It just seems it needed to be stretched out a little longer to have a nicer streamline that matches the roof height. I may be part of the few that finds the NC as super roadster with the length, width and height as proportional and well balance. Just fun to drive. To date, you may consider my NC as a garage Queen with only 16K miles under her belt. It is a 2015 Silver Grand Touring Hard Top with bolt-on mods: cold air intake, Super Q cat back exhaust, stiffer front and rear sway bars, LED head lights and 235/40 R17 Potenza R-11 tires with no wheel mod needed. Additionally, I have custom black vinyl striping kit which says "ZOOM ZOOM" on the hood bulge. At the moment, this car is immaculate and has no ding or road rash on wheels. However, since watching your videos, I am planning to do radio, coolant tank and suspension coil over replacements. This NC is just pure fun and low maintenance. In my opinion, If Mazda stays with the current ND streamline, the NC will become a classic....perhaps a collector car.

    The point that the NC was the ugly Miata was true until the facelift on the NC2 and NC3. The reason I bought my Miata was because of how beautiful and aggressive the front end was compared to earlier models. NC3 Miata is hands down the best looking Miata from factory. The mazdaspeed NB is a close second imo

    The reason he keeps going on about 2014 being the final model year is, I believe, because in Europe the 2015 model was an ND. I run into this a LOT with my 2015 club where I have to specify it as a 2014 because a LOT of sites will think it's an ND.

      I wanted the club for the LSD specifically. The suspension was nice, but since I was buying used, it was less important since it would be needing replaced not long after I bought, given the mileage of the cars when I bought at the tail end of '22. One thing I do wish I could have gotten was the automatic climate control. I got used to being able to set a temperature for my climate control in my Tiburon, and then never needing to touch it other than to adjust the vents and turn it on/off. I would have also liked to get leather seats as well, but I plan to eventually have my cloth seats re-covered in leather at some point, so that's not huge.
      It also seemed way way easier to know that I was getting the LSD by just going with the Club. There was a total of one NC Miata for sale locally, so I had to buy online, which meant needing to eliminate as much required trust from the purchase as possible.

      As far as "ugly" goes, having wanted a Miata since a friend let me drive hers back in '97/'98 ish, I specifically remember when the NC debuted my first though was "wow, they made it look muscular. I think this is my favorite looking Miata yet!" and the NC2/3 facelift just made it look even better. Every time I step out and see my car I think "god this thing looks so good".

    I agree with everything you said. I remember watching Doug's video back then and knew he was off on some things. When shopping for my mx-5, I saw a few "club" models come up. There were quite a few but were overpriced for what they offered. I don't get why someone wouldn't get the GT trim. I did later find out that not all GT NC3's had the suspension package but if it had xm, it was safe to say it had an LSD. To me, the 25th anniversary is my favorite mx-5 miata in soul red, but I think the special editions are your best bang for the buck because of the two tone roof. I have a dolphin grey 2013 and was only produced in 2011 as a special edition and 2013. I wanted the 2013 specifically for the 3rd refresh and the spicy mocha seats. Thanks for making this video! Hopefully Doug watches it lol.

    but there was a 2012 PHRT GT w/ a supercharger not 5 miles from where I'm sitting . . . .

      That is Mazda with its own system. Even in Canada the models & options all are different. I really don't understand why Mazda couldn't keep the models the same for North America.

    fck the cubbies! :D Hello fellow 1 of 450! I was also originally looking at Club models until I found my SE. Question: are the 450 all a mix of white and red, or are there 450 white and 450 red? IIRC, yes, I got the bottle of tire goo

    • @MiataChannel
      @MiataChannel 3 месяца назад

      Outside of the US the ND was considered a 2015 model, because some areas base the model year on when they were first released. So outside the US what Doug said is technically true.. but 2015 was a NC in the US.

    The clubs are a bit rare. Think about how often you see one just on the road driving. I own one and keep my eyes peeled and in the last three years, I’ve seen just two. At Miata shows I sometimes don’t see any. At MATG last year there might have been 10 not including my own. The production numbers were pretty low, not thousands and thousands. I wish I could find factual information on this. I think the total number of Miatas in general were pretty low in general during the club edition years. Even lower in Canada. If I’m wrong on this, by all means provide some info here because I’ve always been curious about how many were made and the breakdown in colors.

      I have an ND Club soft top. I agree overall here in the US Club models tend to be the less bought. In 2024 the Hiroshima factory has a shortage of some kind related to the Club models. Club orders are being slowed down taking 4 to 8 weeks longer at least. In Canada the models are all different with different options available. Not sure why Mazda decided to do this.

      I don't really know the full breakdown of colors, but I've personally seen Black, White, Silver and Red Club NC's. ( I kinda feel like the Black gets the shaft Club wise. It's just all black with red accent decals, but the club badge is pretty cool )

      I have two 2013 Clubs, both in liquid silver metallic; one is a soft top and one is a PRHT. I live in Miami and I do see them around, but not often at all. Most people compliment these cars and find themselves surprised that they actually like a Miata. In my opinion, the silver and black Club is the best combination, but maybe you shouldn't listen to the guy who has two of them.
