The Hebrew term we translate as "property" is actually a mistranslation. In the original Hebrew the term actually refers to "production output". This is why the ESV translation renders the verse as: But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.

The key to understanding the second part about the slave being a property is to compare it to verse 19 of the same chapter. In verse 19, the aggressor is expected to pay financial compensation for wages lost due to injuries he inflicted on the victim. In the case of a slave, the issue of wage loss does not apply because it is the master, who is responsible for the injury, that loses.The NIV translation supports this explanation. The translation says that the master should not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two.

In those days, that task was reserved for the lowest of slaves. He was sold for 30 pieces of silver by someone whose feet he washed. 30 pieces of silver was the going rate for slaves at that time. Jesus was essentially a slave during his last moments in this world. Make of that what you will.
Such a commandment was likely impossible in an ancient near eastern context, where various forms of slavery were needed for economic, social, and military purposes. A commandment that rendered a nation unviable would be bizarre.

You can't argue that Exodus 21 endorses the practice either, rather than regulates it. There's no reason to think that the text represents the supreme ethic, rather than an accommodated one. God's ultimate plan is represented clearly in other texts.

Look at the world the bible describes, almost hopelessly at odds with his plans. There's the option of widespread judgement for corruption (Gen 6-8), or God accommodating sin because of the stubbornness of people (Mark 10:5), whom he will eventually require to give an account (Hebrews 4:13). It's only problematic if you assume that "slavery" means slavery in the modern sense. It was a critical aspect of their economy and slaves were often part of the family. The argument I'm making (as I recall, it's been awhile) is that the death penalty is required for killing slaves. This is obscured in the English, which provides an apparent opportunity for criticism. I have no idea what your comment about "all knowing" is related to. These cases were decided by human judges, who were not all knowing. Exodus 21-23, rather than simply listing laws, is providing examples of how the 10 commandments could be implemented. These were guidelines judges would use in adjudicating cases brought before them.

Every time someone did something wrong they'd have to travel to Jerusalem and visit the High Priest, who'd have to perform a ritual, and God would have to judge. And if the Jews were rebelling against God by serving other gods, which Israel/Judah often did, then it may be the case that God would shield himself from them and those rituals would not work. I don't think this case is that complicated, if the slave dies within a few days, then we say the killer should have realized he was too harsh and could have killed him. If he lives longer then that, then the slave owner didn't likely intend to kill him. Is it perfect justice? No. But neither is anything during Satan's reign (Luke 4: 5-8). God is making lemonade with the lemons his creation gave him by rebelling against him in the first place and acting like a bunch of baboons.

It was a reality of the ancient near East. People shouldn't assume that what's described in various cultures throughout biblical history lives up to God's standards.

It also talks about in psalms about the male servant looks to his master and the female servant looks to her mistress. Nope, you took the general text and applied it to something extremely specific which is a basic tenet behind basic logic. “He shall be your property” is pretty clear about what it means.

The Bible is not a divine rule book. That's a problem with the premise of your objection. Ex 21-23 provide some examples of how to implement the commandments in Ex 20. This is a fundamental misunderstanding. Additionally, God never places his stamp of approval on the ancient near eastern culture. The key to understanding the second part about the slave being a property is to compare it to verse 19 of the same chapter. In verse 19, the aggressor is expected to pay financial compensation for wages lost due to injuries he inflicted on the victim. In the case of a slave, the issue of wage loss does not apply because it is the master, who is responsible for the injury, that loses.The NIV translation supports this explanation. The translation says that the master should not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two.

Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. In those days, that task was reserved for the lowest of slaves. He was sold for 30 pieces of silver by someone whose feet he washed. 30 pieces of silver was the going rate for slaves at that time. Jesus was essentially a slave during his last moments in this world. Make of that what you will.

You can't argue that Exodus 21 endorses the practice either, rather than regulates it. There's no reason to think that the text represents the supreme ethic, rather than an accommodated one. God's ultimate plan is represented clearly in other texts.

The argument I'm making (as I recall, it's been awhile) is that the death penalty is required for killing slaves. This is obscured in the English, which provides an apparent opportunity for criticism. I have no idea what your comment about "all knowing" is related to. These cases were decided by human judges, who were not all knowing. Exodus 21-23, rather than simply listing laws, is providing examples of how the 10 commandments could be implemented. These were guidelines judges would use in adjudicating cases brought before them.

Every time someone did something wrong they'd have to travel to Jerusalem and visit the High Priest, who'd have to perform a ritual, and God would have to judge. And if the Jews were rebelling against God by serving other gods, which Israel/Judah often did, then it may be the case that God would shield himself from them and those rituals would not work. I don't think this case is that complicated, if the slave dies within a few days, then we say the killer should have realized he was too harsh and could have killed him. If he lives longer then that, then the slave owner didn't likely intend to kill him.

I wonder if exodus 21:20-21 are mistakes that the writer made. I don't believe it's moral to beat a female servant and then call them property. It also talks about in psalms about the male servant looks to his master and the female servant looks to her mistress. So if it were really true, at least a male servant would serve a man and a female servant a woman. Now that would seem moral, but a man and a woman? Genuine question, why didn’t God simply ban slavery? We know how harmful it is, even if it was normal at that time. Also do Christian texts ever talk about having sex with female slaves? If so, did God ever ban sexual slavery in Christianity? I am doing some research and would like to be pointed to some credible sources if you don’t mind. All the best :)

That the Law of Moses was imperfect was explained by Jesus when he said that Moses made an exception for their hard-heartedness of divorcing their wives, but that that was not what God intended (Matthew 19: 7-9). Likewise, the rest of the Law was created to help them live more godly lives, but God knew they would reject it if God expected too much of them. As it was they often left the Law to follow the God's of the nations. Back then the air was more saturated with the law of the jungle. Take the Assyrians for example, who skinned captives alive, hunted humans for sport, and kept human heads as trophies.

The Bible is not a divine rule book. That's a problem with the premise of your objection. Ex 21-23 provide some examples of how to implement the commandments in Ex 20. This is a fundamental misunderstanding. Additionally, God never places his stamp of approval on the ancient near eastern culture. The "culture" God approves us is the pre-fall Eden, and Eden restored, Revelation 21-22. As for your stupid racist smear, one more and I'll ban you.

I didn't say it was prohibited. It was allowed as part of the reality of a fallen system. It's not God's ideal. But it does NOT have God's stamp of approval. The Torah doesn't describe God's ideal culture.

Like in this "stoning to death hadith" it's actually intended to make old stoning to death practise almost "impossible" cause here is "4 witness that should directly see the penetration" or here is hadith when Muhammad send a woman who confess in adultery back 3 times in order to avoid stoning e.t.c So u can see how Muhammad is nobel and merciful for time given. Or here is the hadith when Muhammad peace be upon him cry over insect death, don't you see that clearly Allah mercy is graved in his Heart. And you know perfectly what they mean by "Allahs Mercy" when stoning to death become perceived as an act full of mercy.
