*"God’s wisdom is infinite, embracing all knowledge and is independent of all His creatures. We can tell Him nothing which He does not know, but His intelligent, infinite intuition comprehends all things past, present or future. This intelligence is perfect and absolute. Man analyzes things to find out their nature. God knows the nature without the analysis.”*

I'm working through the Exodus Conversations videos and they're SO very interesting! At face value, this section seems so strange by today's standards. But there's so much more depth revealed through those short video clips! I'm so glad you took the time to make those and post. VERY insightful. Thank you!

Context is so important. The law is not saying you are allowed to beat your slave. It is saying you cannot give the offender the death penalty if the victim didn’t die. Just like in our legal Systems the overarching law is to not harm anyone and the student of the law have to learn volumes and volumes of specifics pertaining to individual cases. Look at Deut. 10:18-19.

I will always have trouble understanding the why of this chapter. I’ll just never understand why God didn’t just tell them it’s not ok to own people as property.
    Cultural or not.
I love the Lord but I struggle with this and no explanation has ever eased my mind about it.
But I also know I don’t have to understand it for my salvation. But it’s not part of scripture I have a defense or explanation for to someone asking.

In Exodus 21:4 why not the wife and children would go along with the husband / father? Because God said that "let no one set them apart".

    • @DavidGuzikEnduringWord
      @DavidGuzikEnduringWord  4 месяца назад

Pastor Lance replies - Because the wife and her children continue to be the property of the master. If she left, she'd be guilty of leaving her place as a slave and could fall into greater peril. Yes, it was not a good situation, but it was the state of things at that time.
That is why the text goes on to say that the man, if he wants to remain with his wife, then he needs to stay as well.

What a slippery and disingenuous character.
Interesting that you omitted 21:20 -
"Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property."
No amount of linguistic wriggling or appeal to historical context can justify such evil. This is not the word of an altruistic, loving deity.

lol bruh their way of life was absolutely brutality in this time period. They just departed from Egypt were it was complete savagery. And their surrounded by pagans sacrificing their children. These laws were to counter this savagery. God knew if he implemented such strict moral laws the hebrews wouldn’t have adopted them. You can’t go from 0 to 100. Baby steps. Imagine all you know is slavery and you were just slaves and you’re in the wilderness with just bread, meat and water walking for 40 years. And he’s like hey Guys I know I’m asking a lot as it is but now I need you to change everything lol. No He implemented the most altruistic laws for this time period by a lot. There’s always a context. Eventually as time goes on the laws get more and more moral. He asked for the most he could get out of them.

@@judsonballer Do you believe God is ominscient?
If so he would know exactly how the Hebrews would behave before he created them.
If so, why did he create them in such a way that they were savage and couldn't understand basic instructions on how to treat other people with kindness and not Bible-sanctioned barbarism.

I don't know is the only logical and honest answer.
There is no need to suspend our investigations into how the singularity event came about and ascribe it to an all-powerful deity. It could very well be the case but I think we'd need far more evidence to assert it with the certainty that you initially did.
Science allowed us to map back to the Big Bang, let's hope it eventually uncovers what happened prior to that/the cause.

There is obviously a 5th way a Hebrew can be a slave....to be born into slavery as stated in the first part of Exodus 21. I realize not many of you likely have ever owned/managed livestock, but you might be rational enough to realize what the first part of Exodus is setting up the production of child slaves the way farmers grow their stock...breeding. As a farmer, if you get a male of any species contracted for 6 years of labor but in which time you are able to keep any offspring he was to produce with one of your females, then you would be smart to get him paired up with a female so they will have offspring...for those offspring would be yours forever...See....that is where you make profit...getting livestock to produce babies...

I agree there needs to be some balance and reference to the original biblical text. For years the bible has been used to justify slavery and other abusive behaviour to the advantage of the offenders. The Hebrews just came out of slavery why enslave them again. It would be interesting to read the original text. A slave isn't an employee especially when they are abused, sexually, physically, emotionally and mentally..... Let's not glorify it.
