By the post mortem image, the Perpetrator most likely killed him. Like you said, Mark looks like he was mauled by a bear, and if he shot himself, I don't think his mouth would look like it was torn out, there's also the fact that Alternates have been shown to also use brute force to kill their victims since Vol 2. (A.K.A Jonah's Death)
