This ATC guy is phenomenal, very professional, but plenty of humor to make what must have been a frustrating evening for many flight crews a bit more bearable. Humor done right, definitely takes the edge off difficult situations. More of this ATC professional please!
I love controllers that go the extra mile in getting planes in/out of their gates quicker. A few minutes here and there adds up. One great controller, like Steve and this guy, can literally help millions of people get to their destinations quicker.
The best things about this guy? His voice is clear, no mumbling or hesitations, and not too many umms or urrrs. He sounds like he knows what is going on and is in control, always a bonus. He does not sound stressed pissed off or over-worked, and actually sounds like he is enjoying his job. His sense of humour is definitely the icing on the cake. The world needs more like him.
He really did demonstrate confidence and control in a difficult situation. He seemed to just accept that no one was going to get the gate they thought they would get when they touched down, and he didn't take that fact personally. He just proceeded with giving alternate routes that placed all aircraft in safe positions to hold and wait for a workable gate to open for them, knowing that everyone is going to get to where they're going soon enough. He also knew that the collision response was being coordinated on another frequency. But he didn't let that chaotic and potentially aggravating situation permeate onto his frequency or let it affect the way he communicated with pilots who had nothing to do with it and were just looking to complete their flight plan.
The non-stressed and in-control characteristics is generally true of ATC. I agree this guy's one of the really good ones, though; as things pile up instead of getting super-fast and cranky, he gets just slightly faster and more precise.
I appreciate these videos...makes me a little more patient when flying and there are delays....as passengers we have no idea all this work is going on .....
Always a pleasure to hear a true professional at work! I would not be surprised at all if Toronto Dave has heard some of Kennedy Steve's tapes. And I believe Steve would be proud ;-)
OmegaFlightmaster He gives the whole airport a nice vibe. That means that people are going to cooperate more. It lowers stress of everyone thus making it a safer airport.

Control. When someone like this is in charge, it makes everyone else comfortable. You can afford to have a few chuckles without loss of safety precisely because of the competency. Keeping everyone calm and light despite the delays increases safety. Well done!
