When Dante was fighting of that particular demon he almost received a fatal blow but Cerberus intervene and protected Dante at the cost of his own life. Dante gain a new Devil arm but lost one twice as loyal. This was on one of the stories for the game.

Well, it wasn't *just* fan service, they also changed the gameplay to add new moves for fire and lightning.
