I just adopted this type of dog. She's a small GDS, approximately 5 years old. At the shelter she found more comfort with people, then with other dogs. Yesterday was our first day, and over night, I believe she was up, and down, most of the night. Right now I'm just encouraging her to sleep. I didn't want to take her off property, but she isn't relieving herself, so short walk, and finally got her to go pee, but still no poop. Have tried to engage her to play with toys, but I guess she's not ready for that. This is the one and only shelter dog I've had. My first dog was 3 months old when I got him from a home based rescue. I have no idea how long it's going to take to get her to relax, and trust. Hoping that getting her on a routine, and just allowing her to stay resting with me is the right start.
Yes routine is key and just have a long line on her so you can lead her out into garden to toilet. You may be walking around for 20mins but just ignore her and let her decompress. Dogs won’t pee/poo/eat/sleep/drink/play when they’re in survival, it sometimes takes a couple of days for then to relax a bit. Long term it can take 1-2 yrs depending on the level of fear, so just be patient and you will enjoy the journey 😊🙏🏻
Thank you for the advise. I just got a rescue dog who was abused. She doesn't bark. She had a mussel on her and a shock collar during her birth process in a puppy mill. I have had people tell me to be more firm with her and it just keeps her in her shell. I prefer to go a gentle approach. Thank you for making this video. It really affirmed my way of teaching.
Totally agree on the gentle approach. We have a Schnauzer that is a rescue from a puppy mill breeding operation. She is extremely sweet but extremely sensitive to stimulus from people. A calm, patient and gentle approach has worked best and a little goes a long way. Being too firm triggers her flight response. We've also found that hand signals work very well (for example a signal for wait, or to move back) and are a very low pressure way to give/receive commands once she learned them. It takes some time but its been one of the most rewarding experiences.
I have only just found this lady on You Tube, it is exactly the way I gently trained most of my nervous dogs over the years, she is so patient and loving towards her charges, and I would recommend her methods to many who are anxious or worried about their nervous dogs. ❤
Love this instructional video. I am fostering a 3 year old male very similar. He was 1 of 150 dogs rescued from hoarding. When I think he's conquered a milestone as using pads outside his crate he reverts back to relieving himself in his crate even when all doors are open. I am letting him take his time as he has almost conquered not defecating when i get too close to him. I struggle between letting him continue to decompress saying some cats dont ever go outside and gently getting him into a new comfort zone. Right now, i am simply getting him used to seeing a lead and re-associating his carrier.
Good information! And FYI: Never …EVER negatively correct your dog for not following your recall command. I made that mistake once. It took weeks to undo the adverse result.
I have a very fearful dog strait since May 9 months.he has no aggression but fearful of his own shadow, doorways. He has a trouble going from one room to another. He trying to do it it takes few attemps. Doggy door flap is a stigma too. We have to keep it up. Trying every technique in you tube. He also does not want to follow a command come in dog parks. I basically have to choose him , or trick him with a treat.

I've had my wonderful Greek rescue dog for several years now. In comparison to when I got her aged 5.5 months, she has so much more confidence with all but noisy humans (children in particular). That's fine - I can calmly lead her away from those situations, so they're not really an issue. I'd love to take on a second dog and will be doing so when an inheritance makes this financially possible. Minnie's one and only Achilles' Heel (appropriately enough for a Greek!) is her resource guarding with her Kong tennis ball (which she adores), and I can see that being a problem which I want to be able to prepare her for well in advance of adding another dog to the mix. When I first got her and we'd mix in dog groups while on walks she never had RG over her ball ... she'd even swap toys with other dogs (unheard of now, as she is now obsessed with her own ball, and I can't get her interested in any other type of toy or ball). It only started about 18 months later when my Dad got a puppy. We often walked with them but the RG got so bad, I stopped ball-play altogether on these particular walks. Well, I say 'bad', it was never anything more than noise & "I mean it" posturing - never any physical harm done. However, the psychological damage had been done to her ... and she's not at all happy if another dog approaches her on walks whenever her ball is out and one appears out of the blue. Mostly, though, I collect up the ball in good time, the Gollum-like attitude disappears and she'll happily meet and interact, as she's great with both dogs and cats, having been brought up in a foster from the age of 10 weeks in Greece with several of each. I should mention that Minnie had RG early on with chews if the cats breezed by while she was working on one (she'd give a warning growl which always worked as a deterrence), but she's worked out over time that they aren't going to grab her Rice Bone and leg it, so she doesn't bother, now. Unfortunately, I can well imagine she'd see another canine as much more of a ''clear and present danger" in that department, and of course she'd likely be right. For the sake of anxiety-avoidance (and thievery), Minnie and the cats have always had their food solo in different rooms. I'd certainly continue separate meals and would supervise times with chews involved (just one a day, eaten in a single sitting). But how best to cure her of toy guarding? I'm worried it could mar a new relationship from the get-go, if things go badly - hence the query. Is there anything I can do solo ... or would it need to involve a one-to-one with a qualified trainer and a helper dog?
We got a new dog but shes very scared of us (she acts similar to how you explained Buddy’s behavior) She also came from a german speaking family so she only knew german. Thank you for helping us gain her trust :)
We are currently struggling with a very anxious border collie..she is also a fleer... I've seen a few positive videos including this one. I just wish the advice from different trainers wasn't so conflicting... This video has definitely given me food for thought. I need to find a way of increasing her confidence...
Will dogs like this ever be able to be off a lead? My boy runs when he gets scared. He does have great recall except when he gets scared. I hope there is hope for him to be able to be off leash with me sometimes at the beach etc
My dog has similar behaviour, fearful of the surroundings, little kids specially, absolutely not food motivated, constantly checking his back when we are walking, would hide in the woods and not coming out when strangers around. If I practice this exercise, how long would you suggest for each session and should I do after the walk or before the walk? Thank you
I just adopted a rescue dog and the shelter person who the dog was familiar with allowed her to put a collar and harness on her but the dog wouldn't be lead by the leash she was carried to our car and put inside. When we got home she would not get out of the car and growled and barked at us. After several hours of just sitting calmly with her we placed a crate into the car and coaxed her into the crate. We carried her into our house and opened the crate door and she hesitantly came out. She is now exploring the house with her leash still attached to her collar and growls at us if we try to remove the leash.At this point it looks like we will have to allow her to go to the bathroom in the house until she will allow us to lead her by the leash. She pulls very hard and I'm afraid she will slip out of her collar and run away any suggestions?
Leave the lead/long line on her. You will have to give pressure-release on the lead to ‘unlock’ her and get her moving. No pressure by talking to her just walk and pull-relax…. until she starts to move. She is in survival mode at the moment so lead her out into the garden keeping hold of the lead walking her around until hopefully she goes to the toilet then lead her back into her crate, leaving the lead on. Just do this routinely then let her be so she can gradually unlock 😊
I’m having trouble with a dog that’s a stray and was not well kept by the owner and dosent really trust people but he loves getting rubbed and praised he won’t really run away but when we leave him for a while he’ll run off and ramble around the country side I’m not sure really what to do he’s a very kind nice dog but he’ll leave the garden and go rambling around the area I’m worried he might get hit by a car

Sandie May it’s not so much the gesture but in combination with spatial pressure, calm assertive presence, eye contact -they are key to build first, then put whatever hand gesture you want with it. I use my hand in front of the nose and lift upwards slowly. You can use a treat in hand to start with if your dog is motivated by food. Then phase the food out once they’ve learnt. That way you can start giving a sit command from a distance 😊
when my pup gets tired she acts out….which is after a full day, right she’s eaten, or just before i offer her a treat and i have the leash hidden and as she’s taking food i quickly and quietly click on the leash. I’ve done itso much she doesn’t mind….but one she’s naughty she will run from the leash. luckily she’s trained enough she can’t resist the lie down command, sometimes she barks in protest but she does lie down….and while talking softly to her, good lie down….i attach the leash. the easy times to attach a leash is before fetch, which she lives for….we don’t go fetch until she sits and gets her leash on….so find something the dog likes to do, perhaps that will be a good time. my dog is 16mos old and no longer drags a leash inside, but for most of her first year and probably a few more months longer, i would attach her leash when she was coming out of her crate, and then it came off when going to bed. but if your dog is really not wanting the leash, super tasty treats in one hand, and let the dog drag it. for walking i bought a 15’ leash to start out walking, she has a 30’ leash for fetching outside fenced areas

But what if they are still too scared to get close to, can't get a leash on her
