Jo Cottrell- Dog Behaviourist and Owner of Dog Trouble Ltd will be sharing some amazing educational videos each week on Dog Behaviour, Training and Wellness to help you tackle some of the issues you may be having with your dog's behaviour, health and well being! We might also throw in some of the funny moments we have with all our furry friends on the farm!
Remote collar Training for Prey Drive
Oscar has a super high prey drive and is now trained on a remote training collar for recall. He has a foundation of understanding that when he feels the stimulus he understands to stop-turn-recall. Remote collar training requires a professional to train the dog and owner on how to use it in a positive and staged way to build recall when a dog transitions from Pack drive into Prey or Defence drive.

Walk n Talk - Introducing a new rescue dog into your family

when some people introduce a new dog into their family they favour them over their other animals, allow them to have run of the house, get unearned affection whenever they want and give very little rules/boundaries…..Before you know it the dog is set up to fail by being promoted to ‘Top Dog!’ without even applying for the job!

More dogs are suffering with anxiety issues, presenting symptoms of reacting to dogs/people and generally feeling constantly overwhelmed, particularly when outside of the comfort of their ‘safe’ zone.
Snow

Snow has been in the shelter in Zakynthos, Greece for a few years, always hiding in her kennel and only coming out at night to eat when it was quieter. Snow is incredibly fearful, however she has AMAZING Pack drive-a desire to follow and she is happy following behind from a distance. Unfortunately Snow tested positive for leishmania which she is currently getting treatment for. Snow is a beauti...

Street Dog Rescue- Zakynthos

I found this girl this morning and stopped to give her some food and water. She’s clearly got a bad case of leishmaniasis which is why her skin has lesions and she is bald. Unfortunately this is a common situation on Zakynthos where dogs will often be dumped if they become ill due to the cost of treatment. We will try to find her again and take her to the vets for treatment. #rescuerehabrehome ...

Building Trust in a Fearful Rescue Dog
Can you help with dogs that only bark when they’re on the lead? Many thanks
We have a blind rescue from Spain and she barks at everything. We cant get her to stop barking unfortunatly. Got anu tips?
My dog won’t even move when I’m around
Will dogs like this ever be able to be off a lead? My boy runs when he gets scared. He does have great recall except when he gets scared. I hope there is hope for him to be able to be off leash with me sometimes at the beach etc
Great video, thank you❤
Hi Jo We adopted our beautiful boy, Paris, from Zante Strays in September last year. He is perfect in every way apart from being reactive to other dogs when walking in the lead. He barks incessantly and lunges towards them. He looks aggressive and we understand why people think he is. In reality he is very gentle with dogs and people alike. We have other dogs visiting the house and garden regularly. He is playful but no signs of aggression. A terrier attacked him recently, but despite being three times the size of the other dog he did not fight back at all. He barked at two miniature dachshunds a few weeks ago. As soon as they barked back and ran towards him he hid behind my partners legs. He is around six years old and been in two different shelters for at least half his life through no fault of his own. We can’t decide whether his behaviour is due to anxiety, excitement or a mixture plus other reasons you may be suggest. Can you offer any advice please. He does have a high prey drive therefore cannot be off lead in insecure areas.
I've had my wonderful Greek rescue dog for several years now. In comparison to when I got her aged 5.5 months, she has so much more confidence with all but noisy humans (children in particular). That's fine - I can calmly lead her away from those situations, so they're not really an issue. I'd love to take on a second dog and will be doing so when an inheritance makes this financially possible. Minnie's one and only Achilles' Heel (appropriately enough for a Greek!) is her resource guarding with her Kong tennis ball (which she adores), and I can see that being a problem which I want to be able to prepare her for well in advance of adding another dog to the mix. When I first got her and we'd mix in dog groups while on walks she never had RG over her ball ... she'd even swap toys with other dogs (unheard of now, as she is now obsessed with her own ball, and I can't get her interested in any other type of toy or ball). It only started about 18 months later when my Dad got a puppy. We often walked with them but the RG got so bad, I stopped ball-play altogether on these particular walks. Well, I say 'bad', it was never anything more than noise & "I mean it" posturing - never any physical harm done. However, the psychological damage had been done to her ... and she's not at all happy if another dog approaches her on walks whenever her ball is out and one appears out of the blue. Mostly, though, I collect up the ball in good time, the Gollum-like attitude disappears and she'll happily meet and interact, as she's great with both dogs and cats, having been brought up in a foster from the age of 10 weeks in Greece with several of each. I should mention that Minnie had RG early on with chews if the cats breezed by while she was working on one (she'd give a warning growl which always worked as a deterrence), but she's worked out over time that they aren't going to grab her Rice Bone and leg it, so she doesn't bother, now. Unfortunately, I can well imagine she'd see another canine as much more of a ''clear and present danger" in that department, and of course she'd likely be right. For the sake of anxiety-avoidance (and thievery), Minnie and the cats have always had their food solo in different rooms. I'd certainly continue separate meals and would supervise times with chews involved (just one a day, eaten in a single sitting). But how best to cure her of toy guarding? I'm worried it could mar a new relationship from the get-go, if things go badly - hence the query. Is there anything I can do solo ... or would it need to involve a one-to-one with a qualified trainer and a helper dog?
Exactly right. We have rescued dogs for 40 years, including from abroad. The trick to success is to let them "come round" in their own time. After about 4 - 6 months, their true character ( which you can watch as it emerges) comes out It's lovely to see this
Bear wants all the treats! So cute
Confusing for them🤦♀️
Exactly! .. They still think it's ok to get on the sofa because they're being invited .. so that's quite confusing. Should just be dogs on the floor at all times if they're ruining the sofa by jumping up when you're not there! 🙄🤔
This is helpful and beautiful! Thank you for sharing your expertise!
My dog has separation anxiety... but is totally fine sleeping downstairs on her own, I teach her to be independent... not too affectionate. I try to quietly leave the house but she panics . Even if I am outside for 20 minutes!! I ignore her coming in, and ignore her going out. I do not give a treat unless it is ball return. We are calm.
So clear. Wow thank you!!
Thanks for this. Adopting a fearful Golden Retriever this weekend.
Thank, we will try this with our fearfully rescue dog Iris.
Great video ,
This is a subject that highly interests me as I rescued a highly reactive dog ion July 2021.. Unfortunately, I could not hear you as the sounds was too light for me.
Are you still doing on line consults ? Have you heard of the condition the rescued dogs from the Amish / Mennonite puppy mills come on here in USA? We rescued one , I called him my Dunbass dog because his tail was plastered up under his belly . A year later he is better . He is a much more joyous dog . He still however has a built in systemic flight reaction even in the house , he won’t come to me on call in the house , he goes to his safe place and I put the lead on him there. He can take or leave treats . He has become very leash reactive on walks and I you present anything new ( pick up a piece of trash to carry , try a new lead ) , he goes into Dunbass mode ( tail tucked , wide eyes , won’t respond to touch or treats , he obeys but he is in a frozen fearful state . We have come so far with him . But are Stuck in this zone where he is bounding along in front of us basically taking US on walks … or frozen in fear heeling next to our legs not taking anything in . When he was the latter on walks early on we were thrilled the first time he sniffed something . Now he pulls us to sniff . Totally unbalanced . A firm voice results in him barking AT us .. which we KNOW is not good .
Thank you!! I’m trying to learn this.
beautiful video! you are a lovely, gentle soul with buddy!! we just adopted a very timid, anxious, fearful shelter dog so going to use some of your methods. i thought you said you'd had buddy 4 years, but i hope i misunderstood AND that all these years later he is adopted and thriving!!! the stories are heart breaking!! ONE DAY, no more pain and sorrow for ALL GOD's creatures! ♥
Well done on using the training tools that are best for a dog's specific needs!!! How will you manage with the upcoming remote collar ban this Feb. 1st? I hope you find a way around this idiocy. ❤ It's sad when these "people" and their fallacious logic mentality, thought they had the best interest of dogs in mind are actually doing a great deal of harm long term.
Love this instructional video. I am fostering a 3 year old male very similar. He was 1 of 150 dogs rescued from hoarding. When I think he's conquered a milestone as using pads outside his crate he reverts back to relieving himself in his crate even when all doors are open. I am letting him take his time as he has almost conquered not defecating when i get too close to him. I struggle between letting him continue to decompress saying some cats dont ever go outside and gently getting him into a new comfort zone. Right now, i am simply getting him used to seeing a lead and re-associating his carrier.
Very good presentation, thank you. Jo, you are very knowledgeable, this gives us a place to start with our rescue.
Nice real life dog behavior you are sharing
I have a very fearful dog strait since May 9 months.he has no aggression but fearful of his own shadow, doorways. He has a trouble going from one room to another. He trying to do it it takes few attemps. Doggy door flap is a stigma too. We have to keep it up. Trying every technique in you tube. He also does not want to follow a command come in dog parks. I basically have to choose him , or trick him with a treat.
Thank you for this video this helped with my first foster dog.
Nice, thanks 😊
Hello Jo, thank you SO MUCH for all of your tips ! We jjust adopted a dog from Bosnia and it seems like it's going to be quite challenging. Your advice has helped us very much allready, thank you again!
I just adopted this type of dog. She's a small GDS, approximately 5 years old. At the shelter she found more comfort with people, then with other dogs. Yesterday was our first day, and over night, I believe she was up, and down, most of the night. Right now I'm just encouraging her to sleep. I didn't want to take her off property, but she isn't relieving herself, so short walk, and finally got her to go pee, but still no poop. Have tried to engage her to play with toys, but I guess she's not ready for that. This is the one and only shelter dog I've had. My first dog was 3 months old when I got him from a home based rescue. I have no idea how long it's going to take to get her to relax, and trust. Hoping that getting her on a routine, and just allowing her to stay resting with me is the right start.
Yes routine is key and just have a long line on her so you can lead her out into garden to toilet. You may be walking around for 20mins but just ignore her and let her decompress. Dogs won’t pee/poo/eat/sleep/drink/play when they’re in survival, it sometimes takes a couple of days for then to relax a bit. Long term it can take 1-2 yrs depending on the level of fear, so just be patient and you will enjoy the journey 😊🙏🏻
@@DogTrouble10 thank you for for the info and words of encouragement. I really appreciate it ❤️🫂
I adopted a Malinois mix, he is so scared all the time. Thank you for sharing
What kind of collar and leash
Hi Jo, we have a 12 week Labrador. She barks when we separate her with a gate when we want to eat our dinner. It’s like she is frenzied by food and wants to eat ours after she has eaten her dinner. This has got worse in the last few days and the bark is high pitched and she is biting the gate.
Thank you for the advise. I just got a rescue dog who was abused. She doesn't bark. She had a mussel on her and a shock collar during her birth process in a puppy mill. I have had people tell me to be more firm with her and it just keeps her in her shell. I prefer to go a gentle approach. Thank you for making this video. It really affirmed my way of teaching.
Totally agree on the gentle approach. We have a Schnauzer that is a rescue from a puppy mill breeding operation. She is extremely sweet but extremely sensitive to stimulus from people. A calm, patient and gentle approach has worked best and a little goes a long way. Being too firm triggers her flight response. We've also found that hand signals work very well (for example a signal for wait, or to move back) and are a very low pressure way to give/receive commands once she learned them. It takes some time but its been one of the most rewarding experiences.
@emptythepain how is your dog doing now?
Great videos Jo...only discovered you today. Will be referring back to these for sure 🙌
You need to wash your hands
I'm dealing with someone that allows their dogs in the kitchen on the furniture where no one else can sit down. Dogs sitting and walking under the table while we eat. I tripped over one dog 3 times in 1 day while cooking. I didn't grow up with dogs in the kitchen. I found dog hair long and short in my food 3 times. I threw my food away once I saw it. My dog stayed out of the kitchen. The dogs are not trained at all and do whatever they want.
Thankyou this was amazing. If the dog is dirty and smelly, how long should we wait to give them a bath?
I've never seen a dog that has a copy paste personality of my own dog! Thank you for this video!
Very helpful vid, thank you for sharing...I've also adopted a dog from abroad(it's only been a week...I haven't yet put a collar on her or a harness because she doesn't yet let me touch her(she cowers and/or runs away)...should I try to put the collar on her at least? Please help🙏
Try a slip lead if you haven't already
I have only just found this lady on You Tube, it is exactly the way I gently trained most of my nervous dogs over the years, she is so patient and loving towards her charges, and I would recommend her methods to many who are anxious or worried about their nervous dogs. ❤
🙏🏻
That’s hard for my dog he just bites till he gets put in his kennel
Thank you for all your guidance on dog nutrition. I am convinced that raw is the way to go but am a bit overwhelmed with the cost. There are many diy recipes online but I'm not sure who to really trust. Can you recommend any source for recipes and/or a US equivalent to Nutrment?
Look at some of Dr Karen Beckers suggestions for DIY raw recipes. It’s actually not more expensive if you find the right supplier and you’ll save money in vets bills because your dog will be healthier! 😃
Thanks Jo!!
Good information! And FYI: Never …EVER negatively correct your dog for not following your recall command. I made that mistake once. It took weeks to undo the adverse result.
What state do you live in that backyard is amazing for my business
Fostering a traumatized dog… and this is SO helpful. THANK YOU for posting.
We got a new dog but shes very scared of us (she acts similar to how you explained Buddy’s behavior) She also came from a german speaking family so she only knew german. Thank you for helping us gain her trust :)
I watched this video and then got some spirulina for my dogs. They couldn’t get enough of it. In the end I took the bowls away as I’m not sure if there is a limit to how much they should have. Can they just eat as much as they want?
My dog has similar behaviour, fearful of the surroundings, little kids specially, absolutely not food motivated, constantly checking his back when we are walking, would hide in the woods and not coming out when strangers around. If I practice this exercise, how long would you suggest for each session and should I do after the walk or before the walk? Thank you
Great video! Will be trying this. How long should you work with your dog on this each time - how long should the sessions be?
I realy liked to see this! This is my way! My dogs run al around me , but never walk away !
