Your previous GIB 5 was a JJ model. The GIB 4 is a PJ. The new GIB 6 HH available as passive or "improved electronics"/active. The control arrangement, from the front/neck position, upper neck volume, lower neck tone. Second upper, bridge volume, lower bridge tone. third, lower only, under the output jack, is a master tone. When soloing the bridge or neck pickup, if the master tone is full cut, you wont get much of a change in tone as the master is cutting the treble. Not super useful, but works. If you started with all tone controls open/turned up, you would find more versatility with cutting the individual pickup tone controls. Passive tone controls can only cut treble. (only certain basses are wired to cut bass.) The way the tone controls are wired, they do crossover and have an affect on the other tone. This is because of the way they wired it. It should have been wired differently so this doesn't happen. The master tone affects the end sum of either or both pickups. Regardless of where you put the individual tone controls, if the master is turned down, then you will cut the treble. This is why you have to turn up both the tone of the pickups you and the master to get any treble. At this point you can dial down the individual tone with the pickup's tone or the overall with the master tone. I did modify my GIB 5 HH to an active 3 band Tone Monster Preamp (SBK-3AD, $65 eBay) with a master volume, blend, treble, mid/mid-shift and bass. It's a much more sensible arrangement. Also, with an active preamp, the tone controls subtract below the middle detent and ADD above the detent. The downside, too much tonal variety to deal with, I'm usually a set it and forget it kind of player.
After writing this, I pulled out the stock wiring harness. It's all ate up! No wonder it was so funky. It works, but for no more material wise, it could have been done much better.
I like the different tone capabilities, not to strong changes but good for me I ordered one like it yesterday & think I’ll be happy with it for studio use

Mod it for tones that are high, mid , low switching out the caps and replacing the volume controls to a blend pot and a master volume control and use a boost pedal when you need a preamp. I bought the Glarry 6 string bass and it screams for a preamp so I put a Master Tone 4 band Eq and it changed the sound to something different.
Would stingray pickups almost (minimal drilling/routing) fit the existing cavities? Those pups sound better than I first thought- you've tremendous chops and musicallity
I was originally wanting their 5 string JB, but after hearing this I'm really feeling getting this one and upgrading to that EMG MM with split coil, probably go all out and get a mid boost/cut and master volume boost/cut. Make an instrument that can grow with me (plus I already got their PJ GIB I've been planning to convert to a flat wound bass)
I got the GIB 5, in Sunset. The tone knobs are neck, bridge, both. Yeah. For some reason, the 6 string version is active with treble, mid and bass controls, but the 4 and 5 string both are passive and lost that capability. I plan on installing a parametric 3 band EQ. It'll probably get some stacked humbuckers as well, since these are not coil tappable, and epoxy potted, so not modifiable either. I like mine enough I plan on picking up the 4
Can you come to the UK and be my bass player, please? Love the way that you can play on the fly. Unfortunately, I cannot find that bass on the Glarry site for the UK. It had some sweet sounds along the way as well as some that I was not too fond of. Thank you for the demo.

Those pick ups sound pretty sweet slapped. I just ordered the 6 string version with those pickups and 3 band preamp. Going to be a sick mod platform.

Yes it is a great modding platform & that’s what I like to do ,but sometimes I like some weakness in a guitar to give me something different
