His family wants to repress and conform him to a job he does not enjoy, but Cody does not view life that way, he wants people to accept him for who is, not this predefined role that society has cut out for him. This can be looked at as one of many existential questions we should ask ourselves; which to a kid might not be as potent of a message due to their lack of context, yet still a powerful message and to some degree more relative to us as we age.
